Wells, Frank E. (26), son of William C. and Olella Drummond, was born at Butler, Pa. When seven months of age he was adopted by E. E. and Belle Wells of Kokomo. Ind. Ile was horn Nov. 11, 1900. and enlisted in the army Ang. 20. 1917. His military instruction was received at Fort Thomas. Ky., and Syracuse, N. Y. While in France he was assigned to Baking Co. No. 306. He was sent to a hospital twice on account of infection of the lungs.


Werbe, Clarence R. (19), son of William H. and Marie R. Rebmann Werbe, was born in Rockville. Ind., May 29. 1:95. On April 26, 1918, he was assigned to the Twenty-fifth fo,, Seventh Battalion, 159th Depot Brigade, Camp Zachary Taylor, Ky. Six months later he was transferred to the headquarters company, where he became chauffeur for Col. Bailey, At the time of demobilization he was sergeant in the motor transport corps service park, Unit No. 342. He also served as radiator mechanic. He was discharged June 10. 1919. at Camp Taylor. Ky.


Werdun, Alfred (4), was born Aug. 26, 1897. His service in the navy lasted from May 29, 1918, to Dec. 11, 1918. Ile enlisted at Kokomo, Ind., and was discharged at Philadelphia, Pat. He served in Co. E. Third Regiment.

West. Earl E. (74), son of Jacob and Mary Scott West, was born in Logansport, Ind., Sept. 30, 1893. Ile attended high school at Greentown, Ind., two years. His wife is Henrietta E. Mckay West. Following his enlistment in the navy at Detroit, Mich., he was stationed at the Great Lakes Station from July 6, 1017. until January, 1918: then he was sent to Phila- delphia, Pa. Beginning in April, 1918, he made six ronnd trips to France. He was discharged at New York, N. Y., Feb. 3, 1919, with the rank of pharmacists' mate, second class.

West, Ernest Morrce (SD), son of William and Tillie Jane West, was born March 15, 1893. He was inducted into the National Army at Kokomo, Ind., Aug. 4. 1918, and upon his arrival at Camp Dodge, lowa, he was assigned to Co. F. 809th Pioneer Infantry. lle left Camp Upton, N. Y., for France in September, 1918. He was discharged in the summer of 1919.


Westmoreland, John G., was born in Pierce City, Mo. At the age of twenty-six years, he enlisted in the army and was serving in Co. K. 107th Infantry, at the time of his discharge, April 5, 1919, at Camp Grant, 111.


Westervelt. desse Hammer (86), son of Shale and Luella Worden Westervelt, was born in Howard Co., Ind., July 24, 1895. Enlisting June 15, 1918, at Kokomo, Ind., he was sent to Indianapolis, Ind .; but later he was transferred to the Ordnance Department at Camp Han- cock, Ga. On Sept. 22, 1918, he was ordered to the ordnance warehouse at Camp Funston, Kansas, and placed in the supply company of the Thirtieth F. A., Tenth Division, Ilis dis- charge was dated at Camp Grant, Ill., Jan. 24, 1919.


Wheatley, William Francis (22), was born in Kempton, Ind., Oct. 2, 1896. After graduating from the Manual Training High School at Indianapolis, Ind., he was a student at Purdue University for two years. On Oct. 16, 1917, he was married to Geraldine Burns. Hle enlisted in the army at Kokomo, Ind., and was sent overseas with Co. C, Forty-fourth Engineers. Ile was wounded in action Sept. 24, 1918, but was returned to duty in the transportation corps (Ry. M. of W.). Sergeant Wheatley received his discharge July 19, 1919, at Camp Mills, L. I.


Wheeler, Basil M. (20), son of Gustin and Carrie Walker Wheeler, was born Ang. 6, 1895, at Coatesville, Ind. On May 2, 1917, he enlisted in the army at Fort Wayne, Ind., and was sworn in at Fort Thomas, Ky. Ile was transferred to Fort Dupont, Del., May 16, 1917; then to Fort Mott, N. J., where he was placed in the First Co., Coast Artillery. llis next move was to the shipyards, Philadelphia, Pa,, but he was later returned to Fort Mott and then to Fort Dupont. Ile sailed from Camp Merritt, N. J., in the automatic replacement draft, over- seas casuals, June 21, 1918, with Bat. F, Forty-third Artillery, C. A. C. He was in the St. Mibiel and Mouse-Argonne offensives, and later at Verdun and west of the Meuse River. He left France Dec. 20, 1918, and landed in the I'nited States on New Years Day, 1919. On Jan. 23, 1919, he received his discharge at Camp Sherman, Ohio.


Whelchel, Earl James, was inducted into the army Nov. 11, 1918, and discharged Nov. 12, 1918. The armistice was signed the day he left for Camp Wadsworth, S. C.


White, Archie R. (55), son of Willis L, and Annie E. White, was born in Kokomo, Ind., March 9, 18SS. Ile entered the army Aug. 24, 1918, and upon his arrival at Camp Dodge, Iowa, he was assigned to the supply company of the 809th Pioneer Infantry. Later he was sent to Camp Upton, N. Y., where he was attached to Casual Co. No. 4. His discharge was given at Camp Zachary Taylor, Ky., Jan, 18, 1919.


White, George.


White, Willard Mount (60), son of William A. and Emma Newcomb White, was born in Kokomo, Ind., Ang. 7, 1896. His wife is Crystal I. Eaton White. He was in the army four weeks as a motor mechanic student, serving from Oct. 15 to Nov. 9, 1918.


White, William MeKinley (64), son of William A, and Emma Newcomb White, was born in Kokomo, Ind., Ang. 7, 1806. Ilis service and that of his twin brother are the same, as both left for the same camp Oct. 15, 1918, and both were mustered out Nov. 9, 1918, after having served as motor mechanic students.


Whitehead, Virgil W. (41), son of Charles aud Catherine Whitehead, was born in Elwood, Ind., Aug. 12, 1:00. Ile is a high school graduate. On Dec. 3, 1917, he enlisted in the aviation section of the army at Indianapolis, Ind., and was sent to Kelly Field, Texas, where he stayed three months. With a special detachment, he was ordered to Detroit, Mich., to a school for airplane mechanics. Later he was a member of the 821st Aero Squadron at the Speedway, Indianapolis, Ind.


Wickersham, George R. (57), served through the Spanish American War in Co. G, Eleventh U. S. Infantry. Three years he was enrolled with Co. A, Third Infantry, Indiana National Guard. He entered the first O. T. C. at Fort Benjamin Harrison May 15, 1917, and on Aug. 15 he was commissioned second lientenant, Q. M. C. The next three months he was in charge of motor transportation at Camp Zachary Taylor, Ky .; then he went to Washington, D. C., where he studied at the mechanical engineering laboratory and took special work in motor inspection; following this he was assigned to the Hawthorne sub-depot, Cicero, Ill.


Widner, Offie Arlo (62), son of Daniel J. and Mary F. Widner, was born Jan. 1, 1877, at Hoopeston, Ill. On April 17, 1917, he enlisted in the army and received his first military train-

Widner, Witliam Omer, was attached to Co. E, Second Regiment at Great Lakes, Ill.


Wild, Clifford O., was born at Logansport, Ind. He was twenty-five years of age when he was inducted into the National Army. He was transferred to the air service and received his discharge at Urbana, Ill., Sept. 28, 1918.


Wiles, Orat Charles (53), son of Marion and Syrilda Bennett Wiles, was born Nov. 21, 1895. Hle was the first Howard County man called in the selective draft, who, when he found he was physically able to go to war, did not ask for exemption. On Sept. 21. 1917. he went to Camp Zachary Taylor. Twelve men had previously gone to camp, but each one of them had volunteered to go ahead of bis number. Oral Charles Wiles went to France with the June automatic replacement troops, and was assigned to Bat. C, Twenty-first F. A. He was dis- charged July 30, 1919.


Wiley, Verl Simpson, son of Porter' A. and Myrtle Wiley, was born at Muncie, Ind., Dec. 19, 1897. After graduating from the Kokomo High School in 1916, he entered the S. A. T. C. at Indiana University in October, 1918, and was discharged the following December.


Willcutts, Morton Douglas (59), son of W. II. and Emma Willeutts, was born at Carthage, Ind .. March 10, 1989. Ile moved with his parents to Greentown, Ind., at the age of two years. He completed his high school course in the Marion Normal, and in 1910 he entered Indiana University, graduating in 1914 with the degree of B. S., and iu 1916 with an M. D. degree. Ile immediately entered the Indianapolis City Hospital as an interne, which position he resigned to accept an appointment in the U. S. Navy Medical Corps. He was commissioned lieutenant, junior grade, at the Great Lakes Naval Station, Chicago, March 24, 1917, and was ordered to proceed to Washington, D. C. In May, 1917, he was sent to France with the first naval forces, and was stationed for seven months as a medical officer at the naval base at Brest. In January. 1918, having been promoted to lieutenant. senior grade-captain-he was assigned to the U. S. SS. "Aphrodite" as a surgeon for duty in the French submarine zone. Ile remained in this line of activity until the armistice was signed. Ilaving previously ap- plied for service with the marines on the western front, he was ordered in November to the Fifth Regiment, Second Division, and with them went in March to the Rhine and served in the Army of Occupation, first, as a battalion surgeon, and later as regimental surgeon, nntil the signing of peace with Germany, June 28, 1919. On Aug. 11, 1919, he landed in the United States and left at once for the marine harracks, Quantico, Va., where he was mnstered out of the marines. In September, 1919, Captain Willcutts was offered by the government a three months' course in the naval hospital at Washington. D. C., and the choice of assignment to a naval hospital.


Willer, Henry Franklin, son of Frank L. and Sophia Leona Willer, was born July 22, 1896, at Wheeling, W. Va. On May 30, 1918, he left Kokomo, Ind., for Jefferson Barracks, Mo .: there he was ordered to Camp Joseph E. Johnston, and later sent to Camp Stuart, Va. He landed at Brest. France, Aug. 24, 1918, and was sent to the Chateau de Loir: then to Beaune University. lle remained in the Q. M. C. on financial work until he sailed July 14, 1919. Cor- poral Willer returned to the States by way of the Azores,. landing at Norfolk, Va., July 28. 1919. fle was discharged soon after.


Willer, William Arnold, son of Frank L. and Sophia Leona Willer, was born at Wheeling, W. Va., Dec. 21. 1SOS. He graduated from the Kokomo High School in 1918, and in October following he entered the S. A. T. C. at DePauw University, and was discharged Dec. 14, 1918. Ile was mess sergeant for more than one month of this period. In September. 1918, he entered Purdue I'niversity.


Williams, Claude E., son of John O. and Mina Williams, was assigned to Bat. C, Second Regiment. F. A. R. D., Camp Jackson, S. C.

Williams, Harry, enlisted in Kokomo, Ind. Ilis training was received at Camp Shelby, Miss., until October, 1018, when he lett for France with Co. E, 152nd Infantry.


Williams, Heber D. (12), son of Joshua (deceased) and Ruth Williams, was born at Hillsboro, Ohio. lle graduated from the Kokomo High School and was a student at Indiana University, when he entered the army. When he was mustered out of the service at Camp Sherman, Ohio, Jan. 2. 1919, he was attached to the Second Co., First Battalion, 158th Depot Brigade, but he had been on duty with Co. H. Third Battalion, Edgewood Arsenal, Md. He was mustered out in the summer of 1010 and re-entered Indiana University in September the same year.

Williams, Raymond Nebey (10), son of William E. and Mary Achey Williams, was born in Kokomo, Ind., Nov. 5, 1806. After graduating from high school in 1914, he attended Earlbam College two years and Indiana Luiversity one year. While a student at the latter institution he enlisted in the army April 17, 1917, eleven days after war was declared. Ile was in train- ing at Fort Benjamin Harrison, Camp Shelby, Miss., and Camp Zachary Taylor, Ky. Hle was commissioned second lieutenant Oct. 30, 1918, and assigned to the Twenty-fourth Overseas Battery at Camp Jackson, S. C., but owing to the signing of the armistice, sailing orders were cancelled. Ile was then placed in command of Bat. A. Fourteenth Regiment, and soon after he was given charge of two batteries, including 257 men, the headquarters and supply batteries having been consolidated. He was discharged in 1919.


Williamson, Howard (78), son of Daniel and Aunie Cantelon Williamson, was born in Mont- gomery, Ala., Nov. 2, 1894. On Aug. 24, 1918, he was sent with a company of men to Camp Dodge, lowa. In September he went to France with Co. F. 809th Pioneer Infantry, and was stationed at St. Nazaire.


Willis, Burt James (26), son of Cleve and Lucy Boggs Willis, was born in Kokomo, Ind., Jan. 29. 1902. Ile enlisted in Kokomo, Ind., Jan. 12, 1918, shortly before reaching his six- teenth birthday. On Sept. 4, 19IS, he was graduated from the commissionary school for cooks, and was assigned to duty as messenger to paymaster at the U. S. Naval Training Station Commissary office, Newport, Rhode Island.


Willman, Frank Leslie, son of Mr. and Mrs. Ernest Willian, was sent from Kokomo to Camp Zachary Taylor, Ky., April 24, 19IS; later he was on duty at the base hospital. Fort Sheridan, Il.


Wills, Claude E., son of L. A. and Florence Wills, was born in Tipton Co., Ind. After enlisting in the Q. M. C. at Kokomo, Ind., he was on duty at Camp Merritt, N. J.


Wilson, Grayston Hart (80), son of Henry W. and Anna Hart Wilson, was born in Wa- bash, Ind. Ile graduated from the high school at Lincolnville, and attended the Marion Busi- ness College fourteen months. On March 29, 1918, he entered the army at Kokomo, Ind .. and for five weeks after going to Camp Zachary Taylor, he was given drill practice; the remainder of the time there was spent in the company office. Ile was promoted to first class private, corporal and then sergeant of the Eleventh Co., Third Battalion, First Regiment. 159th Depot Brigade. Ile had been recommended for the O. T. C. at Camp Gordon, Ga., and had started to that eamp when the school for officers was discontinued, While at Camp Zachary Taylor he married Cecilia Stoebe, of Marion, Ind.


Wilson, Harry Miller (28), son of Joseph E. and Lillian F. Wilson, was born at Frankfort, Ind., in 1894. While at Moline, Ill., be enlisted in the ordnance branch of the army, and was sent to Frankford, Pa. Corporal Wilson was discharged Jan. 12, 1919, at Camp Grant, Ill.


Wilson, Joseph, was twenty-six years old when he began his army service. He was born in Owenton, Ky. His final assignment in the army was with the 236th Military Police.


Wilson, King M., son of Ira M. and Minnie Myers Wilson, was born in Miami Co., Ind., April 29, 18SS. Ile enlisted in Los Angeles, Calif., in May, 1918, and was sent overseas in July, 1918, with Co. E, Sixty-sixth Engineers. Sergeant Wilson returned to the States in July, 1919, and after being mustered out at Camp Mills, N. Y., he returned to Kokomo, Ind., July 10, 1919.

Wilson, Roy II., was born Sept. 26, 1895. On June 10. 1917, he joined the navy and was called to the Great Lakes Station. III.


Wilson, Ross D. (IS), son of Henry II. and Mary E. Wilson, was born in Kokomo, Ind., Dec. 30, 1896. On Jan. 2, 1918, he enlisted in the army at Kokomo, Ind., and was sent overseas with the Ninety-seventh Aero Squadron. Ile was in France ten and one-half months.


Wilson, Shirley, son of Mrs. Celia Wilson, was one of a company of men who was inducted into service at Kokomo, Ind .. April 26, 1918, for training at Camp Zachary Taylor, Ky. In September, 1918, he went to France, but returned early in 1919.

Wiltse, Horace L. (47), son of Mr. and Mrs. David Lyndon Wiltse, was born in Kokomo, Ind., Dec. 8. 1855. He completed three years of high school. On Aug. 5. 1918, he enlisted in the army, and was sent to Syracuse, N. Y., and then to Camp Stuart, Va .; later he was at the army supply depot, Norfolk. Va., where he was a member of the 328th Guard and Fire Co. On Sept. 11, 1918, he became corporal and on Dee. 8, 1918, he was mustered out of the army.

Winburo, Franklin (55), son of Claude and Ardelia Winburn, was born in Kokomo, Ind., Dee. 5, 1896. He was sent to Camp Custer, Mich., Sept. 26, 1918, where he served in the head- quarters company of the Sixth Regiment. Ninety-fifth Pioneer Division. On Dec. 18, 1918, he received his discharge at Camp Sherman, Ohio.


Wiodoffer, Charles Orin (+), son of Joe and Opal Olive Windoffer, was born in Anderson, Ind., June 29, 1894. After graduating from the high school in Kokomo, Ind., he attended Purdue University two years. His wife's maiden name was Opal May Spencer. On June 5, 1917, he enlisted in the army, and after being sworn in at Fort Thomas, Ky., he was ordered to Fort Benjamin Harrison, Ind .: and then to Camp Zachary Taylor, Ky .; Camp Gordon, Ga .; and Camp Sheridan, Ala. In August, 1918, he was commissioned second lieutenant in the Forty- sixth Infantry, Ninth Division. On Nov. 9, 1918, he embarked from Camp Mills, L. I., but three days later his ship was ordered by wireless to return to port because of the signing of the armistice. On Jan. 27, 1919, he was discharged at Camp Sheridan, Ala., and placed in the re- serve corps.


Windoffer, George Frederick, Jr., son of George and Bridgetta Green Windoffer, was born at Anderson, Ind., Dec. 4. 1596. In 1914 he graduated from the high school in Kokomo, Ind., and in 1917 he received his degree at Notre Dame University. Ile enlisted at Indianapolis, Ind .. July 25, 1918, and on Aug. 1. 1918, he was called to the Great Lakes Station. llis discharge was dated Dec. 6, 1918, with the rank of seaman, first class, and he was placed in the naval reserve forces. Ile had previously served in the army, having been attached to Bat. B, Second F. A .. from Oct. 1, 1917. to July 1, 1918, with the rank of top sergeant.


Windsor, Lloyd M., was born in Indiana. He was a first class private in the Seventeenth Battery at Fort Wadsworth, N. Y. His discharge was issued at Columbus Barracks, Ohio, Feb. 11. 1919. He was twenty-one years of age.


Windsor, Wilson Hoy (94), son of William and Melissa Woodmansee Windsor, was born at Pana, 111., May 5, 1894. lie enlisted at Kokomo, Ind., Sept. 23. 1917, and was sworn in at Fort Thomas, Ky., Sept. 27. 1917. After two months of drill in the infantry, he was assigned to Bakery Co. No. 342 Nov. 27, 1917, and the following day he left for Fort Riley, Kansas. He worked at the post bakery from Dec. 1. 1917. to Jan. 1. 1918; then until April 10, 1018, he was again given infantry drill. Ile arrived at Camp Humphreys, Va., April 13, 1918, and for the next eleven months he served in the bakery. On March In, 1919, he left for Camp Zachary Taylor, Ky., and as a corporal received his discharge March 27, 1919.


Wineinger, Benjamin Harrison, was born April 1. 1888. Beginning June 21, 1917, he served in the medical detachment of field artillery. He enlisted in Kokomo, Ind.


Winnegar, Warren.


Winegardner, Owen Cecil (27), son of Mr. and Mrs. W. HI. Winegardner, entered the army at Kokomo, Ind., April 26, 1918. Eighty men from this county left for Camp Zachary Taylor the same day. Ile was assigned to the Twenty-fifth Co., Seventh Battalion, 159th Depot Brigade. In July, 1918, he was sent to Fort Benjamin Harrison, where he received training with Co. N, Twenty-second Engineers, Fifth Battalion, until in September. On the fourteenth of the month this contingent sailed from Camp Mills, L. I. After eight months of overseas service he returned to the States, and landed at Charleston, S. C., in June, 1919. He returned to Ko- komo about July 1, 1919.


Wines, John S., son of Andrew and Lulu Smith Wines, was born Jan. 11. 1892. Ilis wife is Goldie Lingo Wines. He began his military service at Camp Zachary Taylor, Ky., March 20, 1918. He was appointed cook for Co. E, Fourth Motor Mechanie Regiment; and later he went to France with this organization of the air service. He entered the army from Howard County.


Wines, Merel F., was born in 1900. His service in the army lasted from March 10, 1918. to April I. 1919. He enlisted at Indianapolis, Ind., and was on duty at the air station, Miami, Fla.


Winkler, Erroll Russell (44), son of Elvin and Mary F. Winkler, was born Dec. 26, 1899, in Henry Co., Ind. On Dec. 10, 1917. he joined the navy at Indianapolis, Ind., and served at the Great Lakes Station until April, 1918, when he was ordered to the navy yards. Philadelphia, Pa., and assigned to the destroyer "Cushing," which made ports in France, Ireland, England and Wales. His discharge was given in January, 1910.

From April until August, 1918, he was stationed at Fort William, Maine; then he left for France with the Head- quarters Co., Seventy-second Coast Artillery Corps, with the rank of platoon sergeant. Ile was discharged at Camp Grant, Ill., April 17. 1919.


Wise, Verl Arthur (45), son of Jacob (deceased) and lda Wise, was born in Randolph Co., Ind., May 4, 1892. In 1911 he graduated from the Kokomo High School and in 1915 he received an A. B. Degree from Butler College. After enlisting in the army at Chicago, Ill., Sept. 3, 1918, he was on duty at Camp Grant, Ill., with headquarters company of the camp adjutant's detachment. Ile was discharged at Camp Grant, Ill., Feb. 14, 1919.


Witler. John Wright (91), son of Grant and Lassie Witler, was born at Burlington, Ind., May 22, 1892. He married Marie Emma Giddings. Enlisting in the navy he went to the Great Lakes Station in December, 1917. In February, 1918, he went to Philadelphia, Pa .. and in March he was transferred to the hospital at Portsmouth. In April he was ordered aboard the Battleship "Maine," and for the next seven months he was stationed in the harbor at New York, N. Y. Ile was discharged Jan. 24, 1919, after having served thirteen months.


Wolf, Conrad (53). son of George W. and Catherine Ilullinger Wolf, was married to Golda Jones Jan. 2, 1918. Ile was then serving at Camp Zachary Taylor, having been inducted into service Sept. 21. 1917. at Kokomo. Ind. He spent some time on the range at West Point, Ky .. and on Sept. 1, 1918, he left for France with Bat. D. 325th F. A., Eighty-fourth Division.


Wood, Alie Mfred (46), son of John W. and Aun Delia Carter Wood, was born near Russia- ville, Ind. He joined the army Feb. 16, 1918, and was promoted to sergeant while at Camp Greene, N. C., where he served during his entire period of enlistment.


Wood, Carl Oral, was born April 29, 1895. Ile enlisted in the army Sept. 1, 1917, at Hoopes- ton, Ill. 1Ie was a member of Co. B, Third Illinois Infantry, and later the 129th Regiment. Thirty-third Division.
