Every morning and every evening, either Mr. Walkup or Mr. Davis would help unhitch or hitch our horse. On the way to school one morning, two girls who rode with me, and me, were trying to say a line from a poem reverently and not sound as if we were swearing! "Oh, My God! Is Joe dead?" We had repeated it over and o- ver, and when we arrived at the barn, Mr. Davis met us, and said, "Girls, did you know Mr. Walkup was dead?" and to us this seemed tragically funny, but we never did explain to Mr.
