Presentation.

SINCE last I had the pleasure of presenting a Directory to the people of Topeka and its vicinity, two years have dropped their golden days from the calendar of time.

In the seasons that have come as they were promised six thousand years ago, with " seed-time and harvest," changes have taken place in our social, commer- cial and political relations, but, taken in their entirety, peace and plenty, health and happiness have been supreme, and calm content has sat like a brooding dove beneath our roof-tree.

It may be that some- many, perhaps- would prefer that the wheels of enterprise roll round with more rapidity ; who regret that the magnificent ma- chinery of our sugar and starch mills has rusted away in idleness ; that the tall towers of the cotton factory have been dismantled, stone by stone, its solid walls razed to the earth, and only an unsightly pile of debris left to mark foundations laid to defy the elements and the ages ; and that the woolen mill, from which so much of prosperity was hoped, stands sad and silent, an eloquent reproach and a mute appeal to the genii of force and energy who might, but will not, throw open their doors and set in motion their wealth-producing powers.

It may even be that some who have caught a spirit of enterprise from more progressive influences would delight to turn our calm, serene dove into a scream- ing eagle, to tear her from her moss-grown nest, to set her a-wing and drive her to face the world with swift, tireless pinion till she shall overtake the great procession that long since passed her by ; for all our little world are not philoso- phers.

I do not feel myself divinely or humanly called to write a history of Topeka, or Kansas, partly because in this community of kindly hearts and friendly in- terest there would be little to tell that is not already well known, but mainly because to an abler pen than mine, to a clearer brain, a more facile and brilliant imagination, has been allotted this pleasant task. It will follow this page, com- plete to date, in its author's well-known and inimitable style.

There are many new features to the present volume of my Directory, which I feel sure must claim your attention and merit the sincere approval of all, and

which should make the book conspicuous and welcome not less in the home than in the counting-room, office and library. To one, the gallery of home faces, I particularly allude. Their introduction is specially intended to more closely identify the professional and business men of the city with the people generally.

They are the men who have stood firmly by us through the heat of battles long and hotly fought ; men who never failed us in emergency ; men to whose tireless energy we owe all the advancement we have made; to whose tact, or culture, or judgment, or genius, or generosity, or self-sacrifice, or all combined, the city and State are under obligations that can never be canceled, and whose lineaments may be already engraven on the tablets of your hearts or memories, or whom, never having met, you will now look upon with new interest and af- fection, and a sentiment of personal relationship.

I refer to and present them with pride, not only because of their great worth, but to ask where and in what other city, East or West, North or South, regard- less of age or size, can a hundred men, chosen at random, with no reference to looks and in no way superior to or above the average of the community in which they live, present so many faces distinguished by physical and intellectual beauty ? My only regret is that space renders it impossible to multiply them indefinitely.

Thanking you sincerely for your appreciation of my previous efforts, I offer this, my latest and best work, with only the hope that it may be received with the same flattering kindness that has welcomed its predecessors.

Very respectfully,

Topeka. Reviewed.

BY JOSEPHI G. WATERS.

THE historian who deals in statistics and percentages, does it, not that he ex- pects the stuff to be read, but solely that his presumptuous fabrications may bear the similitude of truth."Figures are the sugar-coating to make us swallow a lie. Rows of statistics are tabulated falsities. It is the existence of such fundamental things that makes the tariff and silver questions so attractive to an audience toward the close of an unusually protracted campaign. In a directory, exact- dess is neither necessary nor desirable. The percentage of population to each name on its page, varies with the depravity of each compiler ; and unless he is a versatile liar and has a boundless stomach for exaggeration, the newspapers denounce him before he has got through distributing the first edition of his book.

In these pages that follow are the names of living men and women; of people who yet own their sands of life. It is the one Western directory Ithat does not affect the reader with the sadness resident in insurance mortuary tables. In a neighboring town, where they worship God and drink whisky. according to the dictates of their own consciences, a stranger picked up, for the diversion of an idle and rainy half-hour, the book that in Topeka would not pass as the cadaver of any one of Radges' directories. He read it through, and was heard to exclaim that it read like tombstone inscriptions in a graveyard ; and he also remarked that he felt the same solemn impressions on concluding its perusal, as the stiff does on the marble slab at the morgue with the water trick- ling down the small of his back onto his toes, and not a caller to identify or weep over the remains ... There is but one City of Topeka 'on the earth. . Of course this trope of speech has reference to geographical position, size, and facili- ties for getting to market. .. Some one of our citizens may get weary of this level plane of happiness and prosperity, and shake our dust from his feet. Go`where he may, that man returns ! If, as missionary, he wanders to darkest Africa, his bile and diffused nicotine save him for the return trip. If as an adventurer, con- testing with the French for a land grant in Madagascar, warships and cruisers Aring the bunting of the United States escort him back and he gets his indem- nity- checks cashed at any of the dozen popular and prosperous banks of this city, and, pocketing the indignity and insult he suffered at the hands of Jean Crapeau, forgets :! em all when he finally domiciles himself here and gets ready to Le up for office. Det, warship or cruiser to help or not, Waller will come

back if it takes him twenty years-to get here. His favorable recollections of Topeka will bring. him. . It is fate. Our police have learned that the Aceing criminal and fugitive from justice will return, if there is allowed him time for reflection and opportunity to spend his ill-gotten gains. The citizen may be lured by gold fields ; but he returns with his experience, sunburn and freckles, as fast as the train will bring him. We have sont many citizens to the still far- ther west in search of silver, gold, mica, black jack, gold bricks, and other precious metals ; and while they have brought back photographs and prospec- tuses of encouraging holes, the greater yield has been by strying at home and selling stock to our Eastern. brothers, at a very reduced price, when we take into account the gorgeous lithographed certificates that memorandumed such trans -- actions. And such is the destiny of return to Topeka, that very often, uninvited, many of these illustrated certificates of shares have returned too, for inquiry and investigation.
