Our Population. L

The impression prevails generally that Newspaper and Direc- tory publishers invariably claim a greater population for their cities than they really contain, and little reliance is placed upon their figures, regardless of the care, expense and experience em- ployed in attaining them. In order to demonstrate to fair-minded people the fallacy and absurdity of such ideas as "watering" the population, the following brief details are given to show how the approximation is made from the Directory for the population of this city :

The number of names contained in the alphabetization . is 17,342. Of this number, five per cent. is deducted for the names of corporations, firms, and other paragraphs not referring to indi- viduals, which leaves 16,425. These figures represent the popu- lation over 18 years of age, except married women who are not engaged in mercantile or professional pursuits; these are esti- mated at 52 per cent. (which is the lowest on record) -8,240- making a total of 24,765. This gives what is known as the adult population.

To this is added the official enrollment for the public schools, 11,550, and for children under school age, approximated at one- third the number of the former, 3,850; a total of 15,400 under 18 years of age, and a grand total population of 40,165.

Another system for approximating the population of a city is to multiply the number of actual names in the directory by two: and one-half, and by three in older communities. There being 16,425 names enumerated, it would show the population to be, 41,068 at the minimum rate.

This system, however, is not now considered accurate, as women have of late years largely added to the mercantile and professional classes.

Practically the same results are attained by approximations made from the number of voters registered by the commissioner of elections during the past year.

For directory purposes, the canvass for names is extended be- yond the corporate limits of the city, and consequently the popu- lation of these districts is included in the figures given above.

SAM RADGES, Publisher.

To the Patrons of the Directory.

N presenting the new publication to an interested public, I want to say, don't expect infallibility in a Directory, because you will never find it; and there are a hundred or more good reasons why it can't be, although every human effort and the experience of a lifetime are exerted in its compilation and construction.

Of all known books, the Directory stands alone in being with- out an author; a silent yet eloquent proof of a city's growth and progress, or of its retrogression and decay. Errors may and must occur upon its pages, but the publisher should not be too severely criticised, for the fault is due, not so much to him as to the indifference or ignorance of those from whom information is obtained. Some person in each office, store or residence is the responsible author of the information gathered there, and just so far the accuracy of the work depends upon them; and few realize the importance of absolute accuracy. Some, from fear that it may affect taxes or other personal interests, are reticent, and there are instances where they peremptorily refuse to give names. There is no arbitrary or imperative rule for spelling or pronouncing names, and it should not be supposed or ex- pected that the thousands that fill the pages of a Directory are all copied from the family Bible, or that each person can be compelled to write his or her name; and it is likely that either of these methods would produce far worse results than is shown by the average reference book. As an illustration: There are over a thousand clerks employed in the A. T. & S. F. offices in this city, quite as well educated and far more familiar with the use of a pen than the majority of people. Each of these is provided with a printed blank asking his full name, occupation or position and address for the Directory, coupled with the request that they be written very plainly in order to avoid mistakes in printing; yet when these blanks are collated it is found that twenty per cent. of the names are so badly written that a Philadelphia lawyer could not translate them, for it is a well-known fact that, as a rule, a business man's signature is the least legible of all his penmanship. A scrawl, a hop-skip-and-jump run that ends in a pigeon- wing flourish, gives his long-suffering fellow-beings an autograph requiring years of familiarity to prevent an hour of painful study, if not of profanity. To the stranger or the compositor or the person to whom time is money, it remains

an unguessed problem. Care is taken to secure men to canvass for a Directory who write plainly, yet mistakes will occur in forming the letters of a name, and vowels get tangled in a proper name, that, in ordinary words, would cause no trouble. An undotted i will pass for an e, an o for a, u resembles n; and the letters t and l, where the t is not carefully crossed, are indistinguishable front each other. There are many other letters that are liable to be so written as to make errors in a name that may be amusing or annoying - we quote but a few. And capital letters, when used for initials, are often an unanswerable enigma if the fellow who wrote them is not around to have the last guess. Stand on the step of your own house, and try to write a dozen unfamiliar names on wind-blown strips of paper, and you may hereafter make allowance for errors of illegibility or wrong spelling.

After the names are compiled alphabetically, they go to the printer, and as he is human, and liable to make mistakes, the possibilities are that he adds the finishing touch to the comedy of errors.

Then when the book is out, what more natural than that each person look for his own name; and if it contain the most trivial technical error, one that would be invisible to other eyes, woe to the publisher, who is held personally to blame. It is an unpardonable sin, and the whole work is condemned as worthless and utterly unreliable. Then, some one was away from home. The canvasser did not find him or hear of him; and the first opportunity that presents he will ask indignantly why his name was omitted -- " it was in the last Directory, why not in this?" Because, my friend, as I have said already, your name was not given to the enumerator when he called. No reference is ever had to former directories, for you might have died since, or worse, moved to New Jersey. Your name was not given, and some one at your home is responsible for the omission. A slight error in spelling a name does not depreciate the value of a Directory, for if the name is found and the location of the person sought, the object of the Directory is accomplished,-and that is all any fair-minded person desires. But " there are others."

And now, having explained satisfactorily, I hope, that which may have an- noyed or disappointed you, I turn to a brighter page - the future, that eternal and immortal manana in which we live, move and have our being far more than ' in the present.

A writer who has proven himself a poet, a historian and a patriot,-if loving loyalty to home is patriotism,-has written on another page of the birth, the growth, the struggles and the triumphs of Topeka. He has made the motto of Kansas hers, in her ambition and her high purpose. He has glorified with
