INTRODUCTORY.

TOPEKA, KANSAS, November 1, 1872.

In presenting this, the Second Biennial Directory of the city of Topeka to the patrons of the same, I cannot refrain from tendering my thanks for the liberal manner in which they have seconded my efforts in the prosecution of my labor, believing that they will be appreciated, and the cor- rectness of the work readily perceived by all who are daily obliged to refer to its pages. As the continual reference by most of our citizens to a work of this nature necessitates correctness and precission, its usefulness and value will be readily perceived by all business men, more especially as they have for the past year been misguided by a "skimmed publi- cation." In view of this fact, I subject these pages to the closest scrutiny, admitting the fact, however, that slight im- perfections will unavoidably appear, though the greatest hu- man forethought and precaution may have been exercised. For such slight imperfections, I ask the indulgence of a most generous people.

The information has been collected and compiled with great care, and no expense nor pains have been spared to give the citizens of Topeka a Directory useful as a business guide, and one that will reflect credit upon our beautiful city, and at the same time reflecting great credit upon its Publish- ers, for its typographical and mechanical execution. In this connection, I deem it proper to state that it is my intention to continue the publication of the Topeka Directories here- after, that our business men may not again be victimized by traveling impositors and confidence operators.

In conclusion, I now heartily return my thanks to the pastors of churches, and officers of other organizations, to the publishers of the various newspapers in the city, and to my friends and patrons for the favors shown me, and assist- ance tendered for the successful furtherance of this work.

Trusting that I may be able to merit the approbation of the patronizing public, I remain the people's

Most obedient servant,

SAMUEL RADGES, Compiler and Publisher.

THE CITY OF TOPEKA.

ITS HISTORY, RESOURCES AND PROSPECTS. [WRITTEN EXPRESSLY FOR THIS WORK.]

In the olden times cities obtained celebrity by reason of their manufactories ; by the beauty and grandeur of their works of art; or by the learning of their wise men, and be- cause of the natural homage which men are prone to pay to beauty and to genius. They waxed powerful in their golden days. However, something more must be added to these elements to make up the glory of a city. Men have grown perhaps not more venial, but certainly more practical, in their ideas. Commerce and manufactories wield the more powerful influence over the actions of men and destinies of nations. Everything, in fact, in this practical age, is weighed in the balance of wealth and power. Few, if any, inland cities are so favorably situated for the development of trans- cendent commercial power as is the City of Topeka; and its commanding position was appreciated when selected as the political center by the heroic free State men in the early bloody struggles of Kansas. Then, all around was one boundless and impenetrable wilderness, almost wholly unoc- cupied by the red men of the forest, the buffalo, deer, ante- lope, prairie wolf and coyote. The City of Topeka was first located on the fifth day of December, 1854, by Messrs. C. K. Holliday, F. W. Giles, D. H. Horne, Enoch Chase, J. A. Hickey, J. E. Greenwood and F. G. Thornton. And it is proper to say in this connection that Governor Charles Robin- son of Lawrence, was one of the early founders of the young city. It is situated on both banks of the Kansas river, and is the county seat of Shawnee county, and the capital of the State. It is surrounded by one of the richest and most fer- tile countries in the West, and its commerce is supplied by a large and growing trade west, southwest, and northwest of the city, which in extent is measured only by hundreds of miles, and occupied by two to three hundred thousand indus-

trious and prosperous people. To the tourist and visitor from the East, the towns and cities of the West usually pre- sent a crude and unfinished appearance and it is perfectly reasonable they should, considering they are all as yet in their carly infancy. To this rule, however, Topeka forms one pleasing exception. Her broad avenues and streets, and substantial brick business houses and handsome suburban residences ; her flower gardens, nurseries and vineyards, and many metropolitan refinements not generally looked for in the far West, gives her more the appearance of a city of twenty or thirty years growth, such as we find in the olden portions of the continent. From the State House, a truly magnificent structure, you look on a very beautiful landscape. In the north, winds the Kansas river, with its thickly-wooded banke, with a range of hills beyond, and to the east and south may be seen the green fields and luxuriant hedges of a hundred fine farms and vineyards, beyond the Shunganunga. The population of the city is about ten thousand, and the following vote for ten years denotes a steady, vigorous growth :
