The society was formed for the increase of fruits and decrease of insects.

Especial attention is to be given to the study of the devious and dark ways of the curculio, grub-worm, etc. Premiums are offered for the best trap for the former and net for the latter. Especial attention is also devoted to the vexed question of whether we should bud from the root or the branch. With a full knowledge that the future success of the State depends greatly on the high breeding of its fruits, the society will work earnestly to promote the growth of full bloods. By a high character of fruit is intended that which shall be high on the tree and well ripened by the sun, but not high on the market. Meetings are held each week,

THE TOPEKA LIBRARY ASSOCIATION.

In the Autumn of 1870. a number of the ladies of To- peka united in effecting an organization, for the purpose of establishing a circulating library ; and, after several informal meetings, a permanent organization under the name of the Ladies' Library Association was completed at a meeting held November 12th. 1870 by the election of the following officers: Mrs. N. C. McFarland, President ; Mrs. J. M. Spencer, Vice President ; Emma J. Steele. Secretary ; Mrs. II. King, Treas- urer. These officers served during the ensuing year, with the exception of the Secretary, whose resignation was fol- lowed by the election successively of Mrs. Jacob Sofford and Mrs. T. L. King. Soffre

During the winter and spring of 1871, the Association gave several very successful public entertainments, for the purpose of raising funds, and in addition to the very consid- erable sum realized from these and from membership fees, it received from a former organization called the Topeka Library Association, over one hundred dollars.

The library was first opened for use March 11th, 1871, in the carpet room of Messrs. Keith & Myers, under the Opera House, the free use of which for the year had been generously tendered by them. The number of volumes belonging to the Association at that time was about 150, and the membership had increased to over fifty. The library was open for the delivery of books for three hours on Saturday afternoon.

The growth of the Association wrs constant during the year, and its success such as to satisfy the members that a much larger field of usefulness could be covered, and the Association placed upon a broader and more lasting basis; and on January 17, 1872. at a meeting at the residence of Mrs. J. M Spencer, the Association voted to organize under the title of the Topeka Library Association, and adopted articles of incorporation, which were filed in the office of the Secretary of State, January 20. 1872, and the same day a per- manent organization was effected by the election of Mrs. Wm. Tweeddale as President; Mrs. J. M. Spencer as Vice President; Edward Wilder as Secretary; and Mrs. H. Clark- son, Treasurer. The Directors named in the articles of in- corporation for the past year, were Mrs. McFarland, Mrs. Spencer, Mrs. Dr. Baker, Mrs. Wm. Tweeddale, Mrs. M. E.

Leighter, Mrs. S. D. Macdonald, Mrs. O T. Welch, Mrs. Dr. S. E. Sheldon Mrs. T. L. King, Miss Anna Ekin (who resigned in favor of Mrs. M. E. Whitton ). Mrs. A. J. Hun- toon. Mrs. Il. Clarkson and Mrs. Capt. Higgins.

The resignation of the Treasurer at the first meeting of the Directors, was followed by the election of F. W. Giles to that office.

Funds for the purchase of books and the furnishing of a library room were secured by a subscription list for life membership at fifty dollars cach, which was opened January 20, and in a few days contained twenty-four subscribers. A handsome and commodious room, at No. 213 Kansas avenue, was furnished, and books and magazines provided, and on the evening of April 3, 1872, the opening of the room was celebrated with music, an address, etc., and the success of the Association was assured beyond any question. The number of volumes upon the shelves on the opening of the room was 639, of which the larger proportion was, of course, works of fiction of a standard character; and since then many addi- tions have been made.

The ladies of the Association received efficient aid from an advisory committee composed of Rev. Dr. McCabe and Messrs. F. W. Giles, - H. Worrall, A. J. Huntoon and E. Wil- der, while the hearty and prompt financial encouragement given by all classes of our citizens, has enabled the directors to go forward and establish a library which is already one of the city's chief attractions and will compare favorably with anything of the kind in the West. The low prices for men- bership-three dollars per annum, one dollar per quarter, fifty cents per month-place it within the reach of all; and being open every afternoon and evening it affords a pleasant and attractive place in which to spend any spare hours. Maga- zines and daily newspapers are to be found on the tables in the reading room, and as rapidly as possible new books are added to the shelves. There are at present 214 members and 150 life members.

The benefit of such an institution, especially to the younger portion of our community, to whom we look to give character to our city a few years hence, cannot be over-esti- mated. And for that reason, and because it serves as an attraction to strangers and visitors, giving them a pleasant recollection of the city, it should receive the encouragement of every citizen, without regard to the immediate use or benefit to himself.
