B. F. Head was born in Franklin County, Ky., Jan. 15, 1851, and came to Daviess County with his father in 1855. In 1872 he went to Missouri and lived in Saline County nine years. He re- turned to Daviess County in 1881 and bought fifty acres, five miles southwest of Owensboro, where he is engaged in farmning. He was married in 1875 to Addie Powers, a native of Bath County, Ky. Her parents died when she was small and she went to Missouri to live with an uncle, Joseph Self. Three children have been born

to Mr. and Mrs. Head-William, Sallie and Charles. Mrs. Head is a member of the Baptist church.


Mathew Hindmarch was born in Durham County, England, Nov. 10, 1846, and when five years of age came to America with his parents. They lived in St. Louis two years and then went to Cannelton, Ind. In 1855 they moved to Caseyville, Ky., where his father died in 1857. In 1864 Mr. Hindmarch enlisted in the Confederate service in the Ninth Kentucky Cavalry, and served till the spring of 1865, when he was captured by the One Hundred and Fifty-third Indiana Infantry. He was a prisoner till the close of the war in 1865, when he was released. He then went to Brandensburg, Ky., and learned the carpenter's trade, and in 1870 came to Daviess County. He was married in 1873 to Mrs. Eliza- beth Rosa. They have no children. Mr. Hindmarch is a mem- ber of the Walnut Street Baptist Church, Owensboro, Ky.


John A. Jamison was born in Kentucky, Oct. 20, 1849, and in 1864 he came to Daviess Connty and bought a farm of 200 acres, two and a half miles south of Owensboro, where he still resides. He was married Feb. 29, 1876, to Sarah A. Meadows, a native of Meade County, Ky., born in 1858. They have three children- Fannie, born Dec. 14, 1876; Eddie and Edna, born Oct. 14, 1882. Mr. Jamison is a member of the Methodist Episcopal church, Sonth, and his wife of the Baptist church.


William H. Jones was born in Daviess County, Ky., Oct. 7, 1838. He owns a farm of seventy-three acres, nine miles west of Owensboro. Oct. 16, 1863, he married Nancy Riggs, a native of McLean County, Ky., born in 1838. Six children were born to them, but all died in infancy. Mrs. Jones died Dec. 27, 1881. May 9, 1882, Mr. Jones married Eliza Bell Jones, a native of Spen- cer Connty, Ky., born in 1850. In October, 1861, he enlisted in Company C, Seventeenth Kentucky Infantry, and served three years. He was in the battles of Fort Donelson, Shiloh, Corinth, Chickamanga, Mission Ridge; was with Sherman on his march to the sea and when he captured Hood and Johnston. He was dis- charged at Louisville, Ky., in 1865.


William J. Jones was born in Spencer County, Ky., April 27, 1827. When six years of age his parents went to Clark County, Ill., and lived three years; then moved to Jefferson County, Ky. In 1876 he came to Daviess County, where he has a farm of seventy acres, eight miles south of Owensboro, on the Calhoun road. He was married in 1851 to Sarah A. Shielde, a native of Spencer

County, Ky., born in 1837. They have six children-William H., George S., Sarah A., Eliza B., Fannie and Maggie.


John C. Kellem was born in Bell County, Ky., Sept. 4, 1857, and was a son of James and Emily (Colson) Kellem, both natives of Bell County, his father born about 1834 and his mother in 1840. His father enlisted in the Twelfth Kentucky Infantry, and died while in the army, in 1862, and was buried at Louisville. Mr. Kel- lem had one brother, George, born in 1858. In 1863 his mother married George H. Lucas and came to Daviess County. They have no children. Mr. Kellem is a carpenter, having learned the trade in 1877. Politically he is a Republican. He and his step-father, Mr. Lucas, own the property where they reside, a mile west of Owensboro, valued at $4,000.


Hillery Kelley was born in Daviess County, Ky., Sept .. 13, 1847. He was reared on a farm and educated in the district schools of this county. Since October, 1881, he has been the distiller for the Owensboro Distilling Company. He was married Jan. 7, 1875, to Effie Hill, a native of this county, born within a mile of her husband's birth-place. . They have two children -- Olly, born Nov. 18, 1875, and Emina, born Nov. 28, 1877. Mr. Kelley's parents, Barnett and Frances (Hagen) Kelley, are both natives of Daviess County. They are the parents of nine children, five now living- Hillery, Edward, Lancaster, Kate and Frank. Margaret, Barnett, Emma and Robert L. are deceased. Mr. Kelley, Sr., is a farmer, and owns 1162 acres of good land, ten miles west of Owensboro. Hillery Kelley and his wife are members of the Catholic church. Politically he is a Democrat. He owns ninety acres of land seven iniles west of Owensboro.


J. R. Lancaster, born in Marion County, Ky., Aug. 28, 1850, is a son of T. B. Lancaster, who was born in Union County, Ky., and came to Daviess County in 1852, where he died in January, 1870. His mother, Mary (Johnston) Lancaster, was born in Union County in 1824, and is still living in Daviess County. She is the mother of thirteen children, five living-Nellie, born in 1838, now Mrs. C. H. Stevens; J. R., born in 1850; C. B., born in 1852; Miles, born in 1859, and Lena, born in 1869. Mr. Lancaster was partly educated in Dayton, Ohio. In 1875 he opened a grocery store on West Second street, Owensboro; remained there five years and in 1880 moved to his present store, where he has a fine stock of gen- eral merchandise, valued at $4,000. The building is a large two story brick, which with the lot is also worth $4,000. He owns a

house and lot valued at $300. He commenced business on a small capital in a rented house and now owns a residence and fine busi- ness property, the total value of which is $8,300. In religious faith Mr. Lancaster is a Catholic.


N. M. Lancaster was born in Daviess. County, Ky., March 10, 1839, and has always made this county his home. He owns 226 acres of fine land five miles west of Owensboro and considerable property in the city of Owensboro. The early part of his life was spent in farming, but for the past ten years he has been in the dis- tilling business, being at present President of the Owensboro Dis- tilling Company. He is also a stockholder in the Daviess County Fair Association. He served two years as Deputy Sheriff of Da- viess County. During the war he served three years in the Con. federate army. He was married Jan. 10, 1867, to Cyrene Hagan, a native of Marion County, Ky. They have four children-Susie, Sallie, Anna and Louisa. Mr. Lancaster's parents, N. M. and Priscilla (Hagan) Lancaster, were both natives of Marion County, Ky. His father was born March 4, 1809, and died in 1869. His mother also died in 1869. They had five children-N. M., Frances (now Mrs. Hillery Wimsett), William, George L. and Louisa (now Mrs. Frank Clark).


W. T. Lea was born in East Tennessee, Nov. 28, 1824, and came to Daviess County, Ky., April 10, 1851, settling first in Murray Precinct. He lived in several places, renting land till 1876 when he bought fifty acres four miles west of Owensboro. He was mar- ried Jan. 4, 1853, to Mary E. Trunell, a native of Bullitt County, Ky., born in September, 1838. They have six children-T. J., Millard Fillmore, Ada, Hester, Harry I. and Ellen L. Mr. Lea has been a member of the Missionary Baptist church forty years. He is neutral in his political views. His family have not had the chills since commencing to use cistern water, sixteen years ago.


W. W. Mc Carty was born in Marion County, Ky., Feb. 2, 1826. His father, Milburn McCarty, was born in Washington County, Ky., June 5, 1797, and moved to Daviess County in 1845, where he died in 1863, leaving a wife and seven children. He had been a member of the Baptist church since twenty-one years of age. He was married in 1819 to Catherine Kinnett, a native of Washington County, Ky., born March 13, 1797, who is still living, is hale and hearty, and can read without the use of glasses. W. W. Mc Carty was married June 25, 1849, to Elizabeth E. Beannon, a native of Ohio County, born Feb. 25, 1831. Nine children have been born

to them, six of whom are living-James M., Catherine, Annie L., William M., S. S. and Virgil E. Mr. Mc Carty owns 130 acres of fine land in Fordsville Precinct, Ohio County. He is now farming the land of Wm. E. Mc Farland, six miles west of Owensboro. He has been a member of the Baptist church since seventeen years of age and his wife has been a member over thirty years. He has been a Mason thirty-two years and a Royal Arch Mason twelve years; belongs to Jerusalem Lodge, No. 9, IIenderson, Ky. Mr. Mc Carty is one of Daviess County's oldest and best citizens.


John McDonald was born in Ireland in 1833. He came to America in 1866, landing in New York. He remained there two weeks and then went to Chicago, where he lived four years. In 1870 he moved to Virginia and remained there two years, when he went to Warrick County, Ind. In 1879 he came to Kentucky and lived in Butler County till 1881, when he came to Daviess County. He has leased the mines three miles east of Owensboro for five years and is now engaged in mining. They take out about 300 bushels of coal per day. May 4, 1870, Mr. McDonald married Sarah Ann Benson, a native of Butler County, Ky., born in 1848. They have five children-Thomas, Daniel, Nancy, Calvin and Diller.


L. A. McLean was born in Logan County, Ky., March 23, 1826. He came to Daviess County when twenty-three years of age, and worked on a farm two miles from where he now lives till 1858. He was married April 6, 1858, to Ann E. Stowers, a native of Da- viess County, born in 1838. After his marriage he moved on to the farm where he still resides, on Pleasant Ridge, four miles south- west of Owensboro, and where he has 212} acres of well-improved land. To Mr. and Mrs. McLean were born six children, four now living-William, born in March, 1859; George, Jan. 11, 1864 ; Chapman, Jan. 12, 1870, and Nina, June 7, 1874. Mrs. McLean died in October, 1877. Politically Mr. McLean is a Democrat.


Archelaus Mitchell was born in Virginia, Feb. 6, 1819. In 1835 lie moved to Kentucky and lived in Shelby and Henry counties till 1859. He then moved to Grayson Connty and lived till Jan. 1, 1883, when he came to Daviess County. He was married Sept. 26, 1839, to. Elizabeth Shuck, a native of Henry County, born Sept. 30, 1819. She died Sept. 27, 1879. Nine children were born to them, seven now living-Matilda, Jane, James W., Nancy, David, Elizabeth, Lonisa, Archelaus, Johnston E. Jan. 13, 1883, Mr. Mitch- ell married Mrs. Sarah F. Brooks. She owns a farm a mile west of

Owensboro, where they now reside. Mr. Mitchell owns a farm of 127 acres in Grayson County, worth about $2,000. Mr. and Mrs. Mitchell are members of the Christian church. He is a member of Pilgrim Lodge, No. 545, A. F. & A. M., in Grayson County.


Reuben Moreland, farmer, was born in Bourbon County, Ky., April 11, 1826. His father, James Moreland, was born in St. Mary's County, Md., Jan. 12, 1795, and died in Owen County, Ky., Oct. 20, 1864. His mother, Ann (Brammell) Moreland, was born in King George County, Md., in 1798, and died in June, 1875. Reuben was the second of five children. He was married in Grant County, Ky., Feb. 20, 1850, to Rebecca Blythe, a native of Nich- olas County, Ky., born Sept. 20, 1835. They have four children -Elizabeth, born June 12, 1854; Charles, May 1, 1856; David, Sept. 20, 1858; Margaret, July 1, 1866. In March, 1882, Mr. Moreland came to Daviess County and bought 1193 acres of fine land, three miles southwest of Owensboro, of Clint. Griffith, paying $25.50 per acre for it. He now owns one of the best farms in Da- viess County.


John J. Moseley was born in Daviess County, Ky., within a half mile of McLean County, June 23, 1840. In 1863 he moved to his present farm in MeLean County, Beach Grove Precinct. It was originally in Daviess County, but in making a new county it was cut off into MeLean, a half mile from Daviess. He lias 280 acres of well-improved land and is one of the thriftiest farmers of this vicinity. He was married in 1859, to Matilda Lee, a native of Daviess County, born in 1839. Seven children were born to them -P. T., J. F., S. J., R. I., A. A., I. I. and G. W. Mrs. Moseley died in 1878. In January, 1879, Mr. Moseley married Mrs. Mary V. Wright. They have two children-G. M. and B. W. In re- ligious faith Mr. Moseley is a Methodist.


J. S. Mullican was born in Washington County, Ky., March 22, 1838, and at the age of three years removed to Nelson County. During the late war he enlisted in Company A, Sixteenth Missis- sippi Regiment, Confederate army, and served two years; was in the siege of Yorktown and battle of the Wilderness, or seven days' fight; was discharged at Richmond, Va. He then came to Daviess County, where he now owns 250 acres of fine land on Panther Creek. He was married April 10, 1866, to Kate L. Stowers, a native of Daviess County, born July 25, 1846. Nine children have been born to them-James S., born Feb. 9, 1867; John V., born Sept. 22, 1868; Henry L., born Sept. 30, 1870, died Ang. 6,

1873; Bettie I., born April 6, 1873; Ollie and Odie, born July 31, 1875; Richard M., born Dec. 6, 1877; Mamie E., born Jan. 10, 1880; Addie, born March 3, 1882. Mr. Mullican is a member of the Catholic and his wife of the Baptist church.


Mrs. E. J. Nelson was born in Shelby County, Ky., Feb. 12, 1825. She was married in 1842 to Henderson Nelson, a native of the same county, born in 1815. In 1859 they moved to Tennessee and lived near Memphis five years. They then came to Daviess County, and purchased the farm of ninety-seven acres, where the family now lives, one mile west of Owensboro. Fourteen children were born to them, ten now living-Margaret (Mrs. Samuel Veneble), Nannie, Emma (Mrs. R. H. Robertson), Mathew, Hen- derson, Mary, Jack, Virginia L., W. M., and Minnie. Mr. Nelson died in 1867. Mrs. Nelson and family are members of the Southern Presbyterian church.


S. W. Osborne was born in Mason County, Ky., June 2, 1844. He came to Daviess County in 1875, and .settled on a farm five miles east of Owensboro, where he owns 100 acres of well-improved land. He also owns 160 acres above and seventy-five acres below Owensboro. He was married June 10, 1872, to Nannie Hayden, a native of Daviess County, born March 11, 1852. Five children have been born to them, only four now living-George H., born Oct. 22, 1875; Thomas C., March 31, 1877; Mary V., Nov. 22, 1879, and Simeon W., Dec. 11, 1881. Mrs. Osborne is a member of the Catholic church, and Mr. Osborne of the Christian. Mr. Osborne's father, John W. Osborne, was born in Charlotte County, Va., Feb. 4, 1806, and died Jan. 10, 1860. His mother, Selina W. (Walton) Osborne, was born in Mason County, Ky., May 4, 1819, and died Aug. 18, 1858. They had a family of five children- Thomas J., Mary F., S. W., Albert and John W. Mrs. Osborne's father, George S. Hayden, was born in Washington County, Ky., and died in Daviess County. Her mother, Mary F. (Birchi) Hayden, was born in Nelson County, Ky., and is now a resident of Daviess County. Of a family of thirteen children eleven are now living.


Robert Patrick was born in Jeffersonville, Ind., March 27, 1832. When he was twenty-one years of age he went to French Island, Spencer Co., Ind., and remained two years; then came to Da- viess County, and remained two years. He then went to Grand- view, Ind., and worked in a ship-yard a year. In 1857 he went to Louisville and ran a saw-mill about four years. In the

spring of 1863 he returned to Daviess County, and now lives abont three and a half miles west of Owensboro. He has a well-improved farm of about thirty-five acres. He was married in 1852 to Aminda E. Veatch, of Spencer County, Ind. She was but four- teen years of age and died the following year. In 1855 Mr. Patrick married Mary Ann Harrel, a native of Daviess County. She died in 1866, leaving two children-Cora and Mary. In 1867 he mar- ried Frances Armstrong, a native of Meade County, Ky., born in 1845. To them have been born six children-Maggie, Thomas, Minnie, Rose Frances, Annie, Lavinia. Mr. Patrick has been a member of the Baptist church since sixteen years of age. He is Trustee of School No. 57, Ash Valley District. He is a member of Owensboro Lodge, No. 132, I. O. O. F.


John W. Perry was born in Hardin County, Ky., Dec. 21, 1836, and canie to Daviess County when three years of age, and has lived within four miles of Owensboro, with the exception of five years spent in Wayne County, Ill. He now has a farm of 139 acres three miles sonthwest of Owensboro. While in Wayne County he was Constable four years. He was married May 1, 1860, to Mahala Jane, daughter of Abraham Carter, and a native of Daviess County, born March 10, 1843, in the same house where she now lives. Seven children have been born to them, five now living-Amanda, born Ang. 19, 1862; William A., April 27, 1865; Charles C., April 27, 1866; Rosa T., Oct. 27, 1868; Peter B., June 27, 1875. Mr. Perry is a member of the Methodist Epis- copal church, South. Politically he is a Democrat.


J. F. Queen was born in Nelson County, Ky., June 17, 1819, and came to Daviess County when eighteen years of age, where he now owns fifty-eight acres of good land six miles south of Owens- boro, on the Callioon road. He was married in 1861 to Fanny Price, a native of Nelson County, born Nov. 25, 1832. [This bi- ography was written on her fiftieth birthday.] They have four children-Thomas, Clarence, Anna and Ella. The family are all members of the Catholic church. Politically Mr. Queen is a Democrat.


John W. Reinhardt was born in Daviess County, Ky., Dec. 5, 1843, and is a son of William and Mary (Straber) Reinhardt, both natives of Germany, his father born in 1813 and his mother in 1820. His father came to America in 1839; lived a short time in Louisville, Ky., and then came to Owensboro, where he died in 1869. There were five children in the family, all now residents of

Owensboro-Elizabeth, now Mrs. J. G. Delker; Lucetta, now Mrs. J. W. Bowles; William F., L. H. and John W. Mr. Reinhardt is a partner in the firm of Reinhardt & Marks, wholesale tobacco- nists.


Louis Rightmeyer was born in Pennsylvania 'in 1825, and lived there till twenty-one years of age. He then moved to Evansville, Ind., and lived two years, when he enlisted in Captain Walker's Company, Second Indiana Infantry, and served a year in the Mex- ican war; was with General Taylor in the three days' fight at Buena Vista. After the close of the war he returned to Evans- ville. He was married Jan. 1, 1850, to Matilda Meissner, a na- tive of Saxony, Germany, born in 1832. They have nine children -- Margaret, Robert, Enima, John, Catharine, Elam, Eli, J. H., William S. Mr. Rightmeyer has 102 acres of fine land five miles west of Owensboro. Politically he is a Democrat.


Merit Sands was born in Daviess County, Ky., Sept. 28, 1857. His father, William H. Sands, was born in Daviess County in 1819, and is a son of Hiram Sands, a native of Virginia, who came to Kentucky in an early day, and died about twenty years ago. William H. Sands married Mary Camron in 1838. They have ten children-Fannie (Mrs. Jasper Silverthorn), George, Surelda (Mrs. John Hite), Sebina, John, Sallie (Mrs. Joseplı Carlin), Louisa (Mrs. James Osborn), Robert, Merit, Sidney. Merit Sands has a fine farm of seventy aeres. He has been a member of the Baptist church at Owensboro six years. Politically he is a Demo- erat. He is unmarried.


Charles Shultz was born in Germany, in May, 1830. He came to America in 1851. He remained in New York a while, then went to Philadelphia, and from there to Cincinnati. In 1853 he came to Daviess County, Ky. He is by trade a tailor, but for the past twenty-five years has been engaged in farming. He owns twenty acres of good, well-improved land. He was married in 1859 to Rosa Goatz, a native of Germany, born Nov. 20, 1840. They have three children-Mary, born Oct. 23, 1860; Charles, born May 8, 1865; Frank, born May 3, 1871. Mr. and Mrs. Shultz are members of the Lutheran chureli, Owensboro.


Willis Smith, son of E. F. and Naney V. Smith, was born in Muhlenburg County, Ky., Feb. 6, 1853; entered the publie school at five years of age, and attended school constantly for some seven years. After that time for several years he worked on the farm in the summer and went to school during the winter. In Septem

ber, 1869, lie entered the high school at Greenville, Ky., and con- tinued going to school there through the winter, working on the farm through the summer, till 1873. He professed faith in Christ about 1867, and in April, 1872, became a candidate for the minis- try, under the care of Anderson Presbytery, of Cumberland Pres- byterian church. In October, 1872, he was licensed to preach the gospel. In September, 1873, he entered McGee College, College Mound, Mo., returning to Muhlenburg County, Ky., July,. 1874; was married to Miss Mollie Benton, of Paradise, Ky., Aug. 18, 1874. Neither he nor his wife had a dollar when married, and he was in debt $150 on his last years' schooling. He was ordained to. the full work of the ministry in 1874, and since that time has been actively and constantly engaged in the work of the ministry in the bounds of Anderson and Ohio, but most of the time in Ohio Pres- bytery. He is living at present a mile and a half south of Owensboro, Ky., and preaching to six congregations in the Ohio Presbytery; has always found plenty of work in the Master's Vineyard. Mr. and Mrs. Smith have five children, three sons and two daughters.


J. M. Sosh was born in Breckinridge County, Ky., Oct. 10, 1832. His father, John Sosh, was born in Spain, in 1792, and came to America when thirty years of age, and settled in Breck- inridge County, where he was married to Mrs. Elizabeth Sutton. J. M. was the fourth of their seven children. He was married Dec. 6, 1850, to Elizabeth L. Bratcher, a native of Breckinridge County, born April 5, 1833. They have three children-Richard A., born Jan. 19, 1853; George L., born July 1, 1855; Walter S., born Dec. 10, 1859. Mr. Sosh is by trade a blacksmith and wagon- maker. He came to Daviess County in 1867, and is working at his trade a mile and a half west of Owensboro. He served in the late war in the Twenty-first Kentucky Regiment, U. S. A., thir- teen months; was in the battles of Columbus, Franklin and Naslı- ville, Tenn. He was discharged at Victoria, Texas, in 1865. He is neutral in his political views.


William S. Stone, Owensboro, was born June 21, 1827, in Fredericksburg, Va. He is a son of William and Agnes (Ben- son) Stone, both natives of Virginia, the former born in Freder- icksburg and the latter in Culpeper County. At five years of age the subject of this sketch removed with his parents to Franklin County, Ky. He attended a boarding-school in Franklin County. He was reared to the life of a farmer. his father's family to Daviess County. They lived first five miles northeast of Owensboro; then moved to their farm in the Beach Woods, where he lived till 1859. In that year moved to a farm fifteen miles west of Owensboro, where he remained till 1867. After his slaves, numbering twenty-eight, were freed, he tried farming for two years, but did not readily fall into the way of con- ducting his place with paid labor, and therefore abandoned the business. He then went into the Sheriff's office as Deputy, which place he filled four years. Then, in partnership with Mr. Hill, bought a distillery. In 1872 Mr. Stone purchased his partner's interest and conducted the business alone until 1877. In that year he sold out to Mattingly & Lancaster. In 1873, while in the dis- tilling business, he was elected Tobacco Inspector for the city of Louisville; continued in this office four years. Then went out as a drummer for a Kentucky tobacco warehouse. In 1879, in com- pany with Mr. Clark, he built a warehouse. In the spring of 1880 he was elected Warden of the State Penitentiary at Frankfort, and served two years and three months. Sept. 1, 1882, he formed a partnership with Mr. Mattingly in the distilling business, which


he now follows. Mr. Stone was first married, Nov. 30, 1845, to Mary B. Wright, of Franklin County. Eight months after she died, and in 1848 he married Sue Murray, of Owensboro. She (lied Oct. 19, 1879, leaving no children. Mr. Stone married, June 1, 1882, Katie Crockett, of Franklin County. Her great-grand- father represented Kentucky when it was a county and belonged to Virginia. ; Mr. Stone's father was educated a lawyer, but did not follow the profession. He was Minister to Spain under President Madison. In the war of 1812 he went out of Fredericksburg as Captain and was subsequently appointed Quartermaster, serving in that capacity until the close of the war.
