MASONVILLE PRECINCT.
Politically he is a Democrat. He is a Mason and member of Jo- seph H. Brannon Lodge, No. 436. Mildred D. King married James B. Cruse, and resides in Owensboro. They have had two children, one living-Thomas, born Dec. 29, 1857, is a graduate of West Point, and is First Lieutenant of U. S. Cavalry, at present stationed at Lowell, Arizona. Mrs. Thomas King, wife of the subject of our sketch, resides with her son, Joseph King. She is a member of the Baptist church at Bethabara, and has been since 1847. She is now in her seventy-eighth year, and enjoys good health. The King family is of English, Scotch and German descent.
James A. Kirk (deceased) was born in Shelby, County, Ky., Dec. 18, 1818. His parents were James and Jane (Tyler) Kirk, natives of Virginia. James A. was but two years old when he came with his parents to Daviess County, and settled on a farm in Masonville Precinct. He married Elizabeth Cottrell, Sept. 28, 1848. She was born in Shelby County, Ky., Nov. 15, 1824, and was a daughter of Joseph and Lucy (Bryant) Cottrell, natives of Virginia and Kentucky. After Mr. and Mrs. Kirk were married they lived on a farm in Knottsville Precinct four years, then moved on the old homestead farm, where he died June 15, 1878. He was a member of the Bethabara church. He and wife had a family of eight children, six living-Lney I., born Ang. 30, 1844; Benja- min C., born Feb. 14, 1856; Burr P., born July 28, 1858, married Dora Arnold, Feb. 23, 1881; Jolin N. E., born Dec. 18, 1860; Thomas J., born Jan. 7, 1864, and Anna M., born Dec. 8, 1867. Mrs. Kirk resides on the old homestead farm with her children. She is now in the fifty-seventh year of her age; is a member of the Baptist church at Bethabara.
John L. Kirk was born in Augusta County, Va., Sept. 17, 1814. Ilis father was James Kirk, born in Virginia. IIe was Captain in the war of 1812. He married Jane G. Powell. They had a fam- ily of eight children. John L. was the third child, and oldest of the four now living. He was bnt six years old when he came, in 1820, to Daviess County, Ky. His father first settled on the farm now owned by C. D. Jackson. John L. was but thirteen when his father died. He lived with his mother until eighteen, wlien he left the farm in charge of his brothers. Ile then worked for differ- ent parties until his marriage to Susan Cottrell, in January, 1835. She was born in Shelby County, Ky., and was a daughter of Reu- ben and Saralı (Pattmon) Cottrell. After his marriage Mr. Kirk

settled in the timber, where now is his fine farm in Masonville Precinct. He and wife had six children, four living-Sarah J., born June, 1837, is the wite of Luther J. Cottrell, of Owensboro; Thomas P., born August, 1839, married a Miss Taylor, who died, and he then married Susan Barnhill, and resides in Boston Pre- cinct; Melissa, born in 1841, is the wife of John Chapman, of Owensboro; Menerva P., born in 1843, is the wife of Hiram Bris- tow; and John, born in 1851, died Dec. 15, 1874. The mother died June 18, 1853. Mr. Kirk married Mrs. Sarah A. Hemingway, in November, 1854. She was born in Charleston, Ind., Dec. 23, 1823, and was a daughter of Enoch and Delila (Whittaker) Stout. Mrs. Kirk first married Hiram Rager, and they had one son, William T. Rager, born April 4, 1843. Mr. Rager died in 1844. She then married Daniel Hemingway. They had one daughter, Mildred, now Mrs. B. Chapman. Mr. and Mrs. Kirk have had six children -Mary A., born Jan. 18, 1855, now Mrs. Samuel Taylor; Richard W., born Nov. 25, 1857; Emily B., born Oct. 20, 1859; James C., born Oct. 20, 1862, and Benjamin F., born Sept. 18, 1863. Mr. and Mrs. Kirk are both members of the Bethabara Baptist church. He has been Deacon eighteen years. Mr. Kirk owns a fine farm of 169 acres, 100 under cultivation. In politics he has always been a Democrat.
Elijah Lacklin was born within a mile of where he now lives, Aug. 11, 1840. His father was James Laeklin, a native of Clark County, Ky., and his mother, Louisa Shoemaker, a native of (tooch- land County, Va. Elijah was the eldest of six children, and when nine years old his father died. Elijah lived with his mother until twelve, when he lived with his uncle, William Shoemaker, in Ma- sonville Precinct, and remained with him until the outbreaking of the war. Ile then lived with his mother. May 4, 1865, he mar- ried Virginia Barnhill. She was born in Oldham County, Ky .. April 25, 1849, and was a daughter of James HI. and Melvina (Smiser) Barnhill. After Mr. and Mrs. Lacklin were married they settled on their present farm in Masonville Precinct. They are both Baptists and representative members of Bethabara church. They have four children-Elizabeth, born Feb. 12, 1866; Josephine, born Oet. 21, 1867; Mary B .. born May 19, 1871; Nancy M., born Sept. 11, 1874. Mr. Lacklin owns a fine farm of 150 acres, 130 under cultivation. In politics he is a Democrat. He is of English: and Irish descent. His Grandfather Lacklin was in the war of 1812.

Fielden Lacklin was born in Masonville Precinct, within a mile of where he now lives, Jan. 10, 1847. His parents were James and Louisa (Shoemaker) Lacklin. The former was a native of Clark County, Ky., and came with his mother to Daviess County when a young man. He was married here to Louisa Shoemaker, a native of Virginia. They settled in Shelby County, Ky., a short time; then settled on a farm in Masonville Precinct. She was a member of the Baptist church. They had six children, five sons and one daughter. Fielden was the fourth of their six children. He was but two years old when his father died. His mother mar- ried B. A. Vanghn. He was killed in the late war, at the battle of Beach Grove, Tenn. He was a member of Captain Noel's Con- federate cavalry, from Daviess County. Mrs. Vanghn remained on the old homestead with her son Fielden until her death, April 5, 1877. Fielden is still residing on the old homestead. He married Dora Barger, March 3, 1881. She was born in Russell County, Ky., June 10, 1863. Mrs. Lacklin is a mem- ber of Baptist church at the Sugar Grove church. Mr. and Mrs. Lacklin have two children -Zilpha and Zelma (twins), born Jan. 21, 1882. Mr. Lacklin is a member of the Daviess County Grangers. He owns a fine farm of 126 acres, 115 under cultivation. Politically he is a Democrat. His mother, Mrs. Vaughn, and husband had five children, three living-Columbia, now Mrs. Ellis; William L., born Ang. 18, 1856, residing with Mr. Lacklin; and Mary A., now Mrs. J. W. Cottrell.
Phillip Triplett. Lacklin was born in Masonville Precinct, Feb. 10, 1849. His parents were James and Louisa (Shoemaker) Lack- lin. Phillip T. was the youngest of six children. His father died when he was an infant. He lived with his mother's grandfather until twelve and then lived with his Uncle William Shoemaker until seventeen or eighteen. He then lived with his mother until his marriage to Malissa Barnhill, Sept. 7, 1871. She was born in Boston Precinct, Daviess County, and was a daughter of Jeremiah and Melvina Barnhill. After his marriage Mr. Lacklin settled on the farm now owned by his brother Elijah, in Masonville Precinct, one year, and soon after went to Masonville and engaged in the mercantile trade some eight months; then engaged in saw milling, owning an interest in a mill; engaged in this business two years and then bought his present farm in Masonville Precinct, where he owns a fine farm of seventy-nine and a half acres, sixty five under

enltivation. He and wife are members of the Baptist church at Sugar Grove. In polities Mr. Lacklin is a Democrat.
John W. Lanham (deceased), farmer, of Masonville Preeinet, was one of the old settlers of Daviess County and was born in Washing- ton County, Ky. He was a son of Osborn and Rachel Lanham. John W. came to Daviess County, Ky., at a very early date when a young man. In December, 1828, he married Letitia Jackson. After his marriage he rented the farm now owned by W. W. Shoemaker two years; then settled on the old homestead farm in Masonville Precinct. He died Aug. 15, 1851. Mrs. Lanham is still living with her son Samuel on the old homestead farin. She and husband had nine children, three living-Samuel, born Feb. 15, 1832; first married Elizabeth Sparks, who died leaving two children-Oliver, born Aug. 30, 1857, and Josephine, April 8, 1861, married James Johnson. After the mother's death Mr. Lan- ham married Mary M. Rogers, July 26, 1866. She was born in Nelson County, and was a daughter of Matthew and Catherine (Kendall) Rogers. Mr. and Mrs. Lanham have had five children- Evelina F., born July 4, 1870; Charles S., born May 29, 1873; Catherine L., born Jan. 25, 1876 ; Emma F., born Feb. 17, 1879; John W., born Jan. 17, 1882. Mr. and Mrs. Samuel Lanham are members of the Baptist church. IIe resides on the old homestead farm of his father in Masonville Precinct. Margaret married James Ware. They had nine children. Mary married Abraham Kelly.
Achilles Lashbrook: (deceased) was born in Bullitt County, Ky., July 2, 1820. IIis father was James Lashbrook. Achilles was the youngest of six children. Ife was but six years old when he came with his parents to Daviess County, Ky. The family settled near Bethabara church, in Masonville Precinct. Achilles was married in Ohio County, Ky., to Martha A. Johnson, April 1, 1841. She was a daughter of Phillip Johnson. Mr. and Mrs. Achilles Lash- brook were members of the Methodist Episcopal church. He was a Class Leader and preacher in this church for a number of years. He and wife had a family of ten children, eight living -Sarah A., born Nov. 26, 1843, is the wife of Benjamin Shown and resides on their farm in Independence County, Ark .; James P., born March 15, 1546, remained on the old homestead in Masonville Precinct until twenty-one, when he went to McLean County, Ky., and lived with his uncle, Edmund Johnson, one scason, then returned to the old homestead and married Mary L. Carpenter, April 14, 1868. She was born in Oldham County, Ky.,

Jan. 18, 1850, and was a daughter of Dr. Henry F. and Martha E. (Taylor) Carpenter. After Mr. and Mrs. James P. Lashbrook were married, he settled on his father's farm for two years; then moved to Owensboro and engaged in the tobacco business two years; then bought the Saminons farm in Masonville Precinct and lived three years; then purchased the old homestead farm of his father and lived here two years when he sold it to his cousin, William Lashbrook, and bought his present farm of E. G. Yager, where he still resides and where he owns a fine farm of 104 acres, all under cultivation except twenty acres of timber. He raises tobacco, corn, wheat, hay and straw. Mrs. Lashbrook is a member of the Methodist Episcopal church. They have had a family of six children-Ada, born July 19, 1870; Henry A., born Oct. 8, 1872; James A., born Nov. 5, 1874; Arthur, born March 25, 1877; Martha B., born March 8, 1879; William A., born Feb. 7, 1881. Mr. Lashbrook was formerly a member of the Grangers of Daviess County. In politics he is a Democrat. He has been elected School Trustee of his precinct. William E. Lashbrook was born Dec. 3, 1848. He married Mrs. Cora E. Tolman, daughter of Colonel Roland Hackett, a Colonel in the late war. They reside at Livermore, McLean Co., Ky., where Mr. Lashbrook is Post- master and a merchant. John S. Lashbrook, born June 18, 1851, married Ruth Bennett for his first wife, and Sophia Atherton is his present wife. He is Superintendent of Singer's Sewing Machine Company at Greencastle, Ind. America G. Lashbrook, born Feb. 11, 1854, is the wife of Joseph H. Wellman. Surelda F. was born Oct. 23, 1856, and married Thomas Potts. Alice E., born May 22, 1859. She is the wife of Joseph H. Carpenter. Martha J., born Feb. 26, 1862, is unmarried and resides with her sister in Mason- ville, attending school. Mr. Achilles Lashbrook was one of the pioneers of Daviess County and came here in 1826. He was a minister of the Methodist church for fifteen or sixteen years, and at the time of his death, which occurred Nov. 20, 1881, aged sixty- one years, four months and eighteen days, he had been a member of the church about forty-five years. He was loved and respected by all for his nobleness of mind and character.
John W. Lashbrook was born on the same farm where he now lives April 4, 1834. His father, John Lashbrook, was born in Shelby County, Ky., Feb. 7, 1798. He was married at Adams Fork, Ohio County, to Rebecca Burton, Dec. 14, 1826, a native of Virginia. They came to Daviess County soon after their mar-

riage and settled on a farm in Masonville Precinct, where their son, John W., now lives. They built a cabin here in the woods and eleared a farm. Bears and wolves were plenty; neighbors were few and far away. Mr. Lashbrook died June 27, 1874. Mrs. Lashbrook died May 8, 1870. They had a family of six children -Amanda M., born June 14, 1828, married John N. Johnson, and died April, 1880; James A., born Feb. 12, 1830, died in childhood; Bassett, born Feb. 7, 1832, died, aged twenty-two; Winorah H. , born March 30, 1837, married Lindsay Pursen, and died Sept. 2, 1859; Sarah A. II., born Sept. 12, 1841, is the wife of James Yewell, in Owensboro. John W. Lashbrook, born April 4, 1834, was the third son and fourth child, but the oldest living. He married Miriam L. Burton, Dec. 24, 1867. She was born in Masonville, March 6, 1835, and was a daughter of James and Susan (Ward) Burton, old settlers of Daviess County. After Mr. and Mrs. Lashbrook were married they settled on the old homestead farm, where they now reside. Mrs. Lashbrook is a member of the Methodist Episcopal church. They have one son-James Allen, born Oct. 22, 1868. Mr. Lashbrook owns a fine farm of 138 acres, 100 under eulti- vation. Politically he was first a Whig but is now a Democrat.
Norris Lashbrook (deceased) was born in Bullitt County, Ky., July 8, 1809. He was a son of James Lashbrook. Norris was the second son of a family of six children. Norris was but fifteen years old when he came with his parents to Daviess County, Ky., settling in the timber, near where the Bethabara church now is, in Masonville Preeinet. He married Catharine Foreman, in Nelson County, Ky., March 7, 1833. She was born in Nelson County, Ky., near Bardstown, and was a daughter of Thomas Foreman. After their marriage Mr. and Mrs. Lashbrook settled on their farm near the Bethabara church, in Masonville Precinet. He and wife were both members of the Methodist Episcopal church. They had a family of seven children; six lived to be men and women -- Martha Y., born Feb. 1, 1834, married William A. Dotson, a Methodist minister; he died in 1879; she resides with her family in Newton, Kas. Cordelia B., born Nov. 1, 1835, married Gabriel Acton; she is now a widow, and resides with her daugh- ter, Mrs. Robert Duke, in Ohio County. Sarah E. was born Jan. 13, 1858, and married John B. Burton; she died in April, 1875. William M. was born Nov. 26, 1839. He remained on the old homestead with his father until the late war, when, Sept. 29, 1861, he enlisted in C. T. Noel's company, Wheeler's Confederate

cavalry, and remained in the service until the close of the war; was in the battles of Murfreesboro, Tenn., Perryville, Ky., battle of Chickamauga, Tenn., Missionary Ridge, Dug Gap on Taylor's Ridge, Kenesaw Mountain, Ga., Peach Tree Creek, Ga., Benton- ville, N. C., and various other skirmishes, including a twenty-five days' skirmish in the mountains of Eastern Kentucky, on a retreat after the battle of Perryville. At the close of the war, May 25, 1865, Mr. Lashbrook returned home to Daviess County, where he has since remained. He married Lucy J. Bean, Feb. 2, 1869. She was born in Ohio County, Ky., and was a daughter of Henry and Martha (Birkhead) Bean, early settlers of Ohio County, Ky. After his marriage Mr. Lashbrook settled near Bethabara church, and remained here until 1877, when he purchased his present farm, one half mile southwest of Masonville. He and wife are members of the Baptist church. They have had a family of six sons- Norris, born Nov. 15, 1869; George, born Jan. 21, 1872; Thomas, born June 16, 1874; Henry, born Dec. 17, 1877; Yeiser, born May 25, 1880; Foreman, born Sept. 14, 1882. Mr. Lashbrook owns a fine farm of 128 acres, eighty under cultivation. He raises tobacco, cora, wheat and hay, and horses and cattle. He is a Mason, and was formerly a member of the John J. Daveiss Lodge, No. 389, Sugar Grove church; in politics is a Democrat. Saraiah D. Lashbrook was born Jan. 29,. 1842. He enlisted in Captain Noel's company, Wheeler's Confederate cavalry, and was wounded and captured at the battle of the Sacotchee Valley, Tenn., on the Sacotchee River. He died in the "Camp Chase " prison. James B. Lashbrook was born March 4, 1844. He married Sarah M. Taylor. They reside on their farm in Knottsville Precinct. Mil- dred R. was born Jan. 24, 1846. She died an infant. Mr. Norris Lashbrook was one of the pioneers of Daviess County, Ky. He was an earnest Christian and a good husband, father and neigh- bor. He was a very intelligent man, of good judgment.
R. M. Lewis was born in Nelson County, Ky., eight miles east of Bardstown, Oct. 8, 1829. His parents were Henry and Linda (Linthaceme) Lewis, natives of Kentucky. They had a family of twelve children; ten lived to be men and women. R. M. was the seventh child and fifth son. He remained on the old homestead with his parents, in Nelson County, until March, 1851, when he came to Daviess County, Ky., and March 18, 1854, married Miss Eliza T. Mckay, in Owensboro. She was born in Taylorville, Spencer Co., Ky., Jan. 14, 1833, and was a daughter of George N.

and Angeline Mckay. After Mr. and Mrs. Lewis were married he formed a partnership with his father-in-law, and they opened a wholesale and retail furniture store in Owensboro. Mr. Lewis re- mained in this business two years, but, owing to poor health, re- turned to Nelson County, Ky., and remained on the farm some twenty months; then returned to Daviess County, and settled on a farm in Murray Precinct, fourteen miles south of Owensboro; re- mained here nine years, then moved on the old Talbort farm. When the Owensboro & Nashville Railway was built Mr. Lewis gave two acres of his farm for a depot, and named it Lewis Station. In March, 1869, he sold his farm here and purchased his present farm, eight miles south of Owensboro, Murray Precinct. He and wife are members of the United Baptist church, as were also their parents. They have had a family of eleven children, eight living -George H., born Dec. 15, 1853, married Aurelia McCormick, and resides in Murray Precinct; James, born Sept. 15, 1861; Lo- rena P., born March 5, 1863; Leander, born Ang. 2, 1864, married William H. McCormick, June 22, 1882, and resides in Mason- ville Precinct; William V., born Aug. 23, 1866; Sana B., born March 5, 1869; Nannie G., born Dec. 8, 1870; Kate H., born July 10, 1873. Mr. Lewis owns a fine stock-farm of 150 acres, where he resides, eighty acres under cultivation. He has owned and bred some of as fine race-horses as there have been in the country. He owned the celebrated stallion "Corbean," trotter and pacer, sired by Leach's imported Canadian stallion " Corbeau." His dam was the thoroughbred stallion, " Old Frank." This stallion "Corbean " was the sire of "Billy Boice," " Cora Paine," "Little George," " White Face " and others. The horses are not only celebrated for their speed and bottom but for their good sense and gentleness. Mr. Lewis kept the old stallion six years, and owned him when he died. He died aged twenty-seven years, and was a good saddle- horse up to within two weeks of his death. Mr. Lewis still breeds, buys and ships road and track horses. He always loved horses, and showed a taste for them at an early age. He drove four horses when seven years old, and has handled horses ever since. He has been breeding horses for the past twenty two years. He has been a member of the Baptist church since eleven years old, and was made Deacon of this church when twenty-three years old, and at twenty-four was made Assistant Superintendent of the Sabbath- school. For the past five years he has been Superintendent of the Sabbatlı-school at Oak Grove, and for two years never missed but

one Sabbath's attendance. In politics he was first a Whig, and since that time has been a supporter of the Democratic party. He has always been known and respected as a representative man, a lover of peace and quiet, and in many instances has proven him- self a peace-maker. His uncle, Thomas J., and his grandfather were both State Senators from Kentucky.
Tapley Maddux was born in Shelby County, Ky., May 10, 1820. His parents were Nelson and Narcissa (Bauchamp) Mad- dux, natives of Virginia, and members of the Baptist church. They had a family of four sons and four daughters, four living- Matilda, who married Geo. Swoope and is a widow, residing with her daughter Amanda in Louisville; Julia, wife of Mr. Pie, hatter, of Cincinnati, Ohio; Eliza A., wife of Mr. Pickens, of Chicago, Ill .; and Tapley. In the fall of 1827 he came with his parents to Da- viess County. His father settled on a farm eight miles east of Owensboro, in Upper Town Precinct, where Tapley remained until his marriage to Telitha Pursell, March 1, 1841. She was born in Knottsville Precinct, Daviess County, and was a daughter of Thomas and Susan Pursell. In 1844 Mr. Maddux settled on a farm in Knottsville Precinct and opened the first grocery store at the cross roads of the Hardin and Knottsville roads. In 1854 Mr. Maddux sold out and located at Pleasant Point, Upper Town Pre- cinct, and opened a store and was appointed Postmaster; remained here until the war broke out, when he sold out and went to Owens. boro and clerked in a grocery store until the close of the war. He then bought back his place at Pleasant Point and opened a store of general merchandise and remained here six or seven years; then went to Owensboro and bought property and eighteen acres of land east of Owensboro, where the coal banks now are. In 1876 came to Bethabara and opened his present store, where he carries a stock of general merchandise. Mr. and Mrs. Maddux had four children, two living-Susan, wife of Reuben Hickman, a Mason, of Owensboro; Matilda, wife of George Camp. Mr. Mad- dux owns a nice house adjoining his store, where he and wife re- side. He is a member of Brannon Lodge, A. F. & A. M., at Bethabara. In politics he is rather independent voting for men rather than party. He has served as Sheriff of this county.
Thomas D. Martin is one of the pioneers of Daviess County residing on his farm at Masonville, Masonville Precinct, and one of the few old settlers now residing in the county. He was born on Plum Creek, in Shelby County, Ky., June 27, 1819. His

parents were Joseph M. and Elizabeth (King) Martin. His father was born in Virginia and came with his parents to Shelby County, Ky., when nine or ten years old. He was married in Shelby County and himself and wife were members of the Baptist church. They had a family of two sons and one daughter. Thomas D., sub- jeet of this sketch, was the eldest. When two years of age he re- moved, with his parents to what is now Washington County, Ind., settling on Bear Creek; when four years old, in 1823, came with his parents to Daviess Connty, Ky., settling in the timber near Bethabara church, in this precinct. At that time Owensboro was but a small place of six or eight log cabins. Old Davy Martin kept a store of general merchandise on a small scale. Isaac and James Kennady, uncle and nephew, also kept a small store. A doggery, where whisky and groceries were sold on a small scale, was kept by James and Stephen Rogers. Mr. Martin remained on the old homestead until twenty-one years old, when he married Miss Cyntha Gordou, June 30, 1840. She was born in Shelby County, Ky., and was a daughter of William and Elizabeth (Mil- ler) Gordon, natives of Virginia. After his marriage Mr. Martin settled on a farm near his father, in Masonville Precinct, some four miles northeast of where he now resides. They had three children; two lived, viz .: John W., born Nov. 2, 1842, who mar- ried Miss Rebecca Yewell, and died Oct. 28, 1868; Mary A., born July 18, 1845; is the wife of John S. Mobberly, and resides on their farm in Masonville Precinct. Mrs. Martin died Oct. 10, 1847. She was a member of the Baptist church, which she joined when thir- teen years old. Mr. Martin married Miss Margaret Tanner, June 4, 1849. She was born in McLean County (at that time called Da- viess County), May 5, 1828, and was a daughter of Thomas and Anna (Davis) Tanner; the former was from North Carolina, and was in the war of 1812; himself and brother Frederie was in the battle of New Orleans; the latter was from Virginia, and was a member of the Baptist church. Mr. and Mrs. Martin are members of the Baptist church at Sugar Grove, and have had eight children, viz .: Benjamin M., born April 28, 1850, died when four months old; Nannie G., born Sept. 21, 1851, married John Steele, and resides in Sorghotown; Joseph M., born Jan. 26, 1854, died when an infant; Thomas T., born Nov. 7, 1857; Theodore L., born Jan. 8, 1858, is teaching school in Russell District, Murray Pre- cinct; Cora N., born Aug. 14, 1861; William A., born Oct. 27, 1865; Maud M., born Oct. 14, 1867.
