In addition to these public schools the city contains about forty private schools, several of which are High schools, conducted by gentlemen of great reputation as teachers. 'The number of pupils in all the private schools is about 1000.
In the vicinity of the city there are several boarding schools under the care of eminent teachers.
The citizens of Louisville feel that a good public school system is essential to the prosperity of the city, and have manifested a determination to support and improve the system. The compiler of this Directory, while taking the census, found many persons who said that they came to the city not so much an account of business, as for the purpose of educating their children, A good system of schools is one of the most important elements in the pros- perity of the city; and if a thorough system is supported, the advantages even in a pecuniary view will more than - counterbalance all the necessary expenditures.
