The "Peerless," The Best Cooking Stove ever made for Coal or Wood.
With or without Extension Top. Nos. 72, 8, 8}, and 9,
The "PEERLESS" has all the advantages of the popular Stoves in use, together with such NEW FEA- TURES as justify the manufacturers in calling it the BEST COOKING STOVE in the market.
It is the " PEERLESS," because it is superior to all other Cooking Stoves in Economy, Simplicity, Cleanliness, Baking, Roasting, and Beauty. 1st. ECONOMY. A patented method of heating the air and conveying it through the oven, saves fromn twenty to thirty per cent of fuel. 2d. SIM. PLICITY. It is easily managed. The fire can be perfectly controlled, and kept through an entire season without rekindling. 3d. CLEANLINESS. NO dust escapes while shaking or dump- ing the grate. 4th. BAKING. Its large oven, wherein all parts are of equa' temperature, bakes as evenly as u brick oven, and that without turning the article. It bakes quickly. 5th. ROASTING. A current of hot air con- stantly passing through the oven, so thoroughly , ... tilates it that it roasts as well as a Tin Kitchen. 6th. BEAUTY. Made of the best iron, it will not crack. Well moulded, artisti- cally designed, and smoothly cast, it is the most beautiful, as well as the most serviceable Stove in the market. Each Stove is WARRANTED to be and to do all that is claimed for it. In all the requisites of a first-class Cook Stove, the " Peerless," as its name indicates, has no equal in the market.
THE MODEL FURNACE,
MANUFACTURED BY THE BARSTOW STOVE COMPANY, PROVIDENCE, R. I.
All persons in want of Furnaces are requested to call and examine this Furnace, which possesses many advantages over all others, and is decidedly the best in the market.
THE CELEBRATED Oriental Base Burning Furnaces and Stoves.
Also, as large a variety of Parlor, Kitchen and Office Stoves as can be found elsewhere in the city. Particular attention paid to all kinds of PLUMBING, TIN AND SHEET IRON WORK.
ALSO, THE EUREKA CLOTHES WRINGER, Which needs only to be tried to become the pet of Washing-day.

21891 917,444 Arlington PREFACE.
WE take pleasure in presenting the FIRST NUMBER of the SOMERVILLE, ARLINGTON, and BELMONT DIRECTORY to the Public. No expense has been spared to furnish such a book as would be a credit to ourselves as well as to the Towns represented.
The Towns have been thoroughly canvassed by compe- tent agents, and the book is compiled on an improved plan, which cannot fail to find favor with all those who may have occasion to use it. We have also added a new map of each place, engraved expressly for this work.
The book is printed with new type, on extra paper, and bound in a handsome and substantial manner, and we do not hesitate to say it cannot be excelled for style and correctness.
We would especially call attention to our ADVERTISING DEPARTMENT. It contains the business cards of many of the first-class merchants and manufacturers of SOMERVILLE, ARLINGTON, BOSTON and vicinity.
Many thanks are due to all who have aided us in any way in our arduous duties, and especially to the numerous patrons of the work.
Respectfully,
DUDLEY & GREENOUGH.

SKETCH
OF
SOMERVILLE.
-
This pleasant town was formerly within the territorial limits of Charlestown, from which it was separated and legally invested with the rights of an independent town- ship in the year 1842.
It contained at that time about 1,000 inhabitants. There was no place of worship in the town until March, 1844, when through the active exertions of Rev. Richard Manning Hodges, with the concurrence and approbation of the Rev. Geo. E. Ellis, of Harvard Church, Charles- town, the first assembly for public worship gathered in a small "upper room" of an unpretending building, situated on the corner of what is now Washington and Prospect streets. The meeting was represented by about thirty families. From this meeting, sprung up what is now the first Congregational church, located on Highland avenue.
The town is pleasantly situated ; abounding in a variety of hill and dale. There are many splendid residences on Spring, Winter and Prospect Hills, from which the most extensive and delightful views of the city and surround- ing country, are to be had. On the top of Winter and Prospect Hills, are still to be seen the remains of the em- bankments thrown up by the Americans, for their defence after the battle of Bunker Hill and during the memorable siege of Boston.
The Schools of Somerville are of a high order,-consist- ing of a High School, and Fourteen Grammar and Primary Schools. Two School-houses have been erected this year, The Bennett School House at a total cost of $12,643.68. The Webster School House, $11,860.20. The town appropriated, in 1868, $41,700 for School expenses. More than $120,000 have been expended for the purchase of land, and the construction and furnishing of school-houses, during the past eight years.
When Somerville was incorporated in 1842, there were only 293 scholars belonging to all the schools, although children were admitted at four years of age.
20
SOMERVILLE DIRECTORY.
There were belonging to the town four school-houses, containing in all, five school-rooms.
The Town since its organization has built 17 school houses, containing in all, 59 school-rooms.
Connected with the High School is an association which was organized in 1864. Several courses of popular lect- ures, free to the public, have been given by this society the past winter.
