DUDLEY & GREENOUGH, 8 CONGRESS SQUARE. 1869.

Entered according to Act of Congress, in the year 1869, by DUDLEY & GREENOUGH, in the Clerk's Office of the District Court of the District of Massachusetts.

SKETCH OF ARLINGTON.

BY REV. D. R. CADY.

The Town of Arlington has had the fortune to be known by several names. It was first called Northwest or Second Precinct of Cambridge. Then it took the Indian appellation, Menotomy. It was afterwards incorpo- rated under the name of West Cambridge. The latter. designation was changed, in 1867, to Arlington.

In the pleasantness of its location, in the productive- ness of its gardens and farms, in the healthfulness of its climate, in the variety and beauty of its natural scenery, in its social and educational advantages, it is surpassed by none of its sister towns in the vicinity of Boston.

Arlington has a Revolutionary record to which history has scarcely done justice. On the 19th of April, 1775, the British troops marched through it on their way to and from Lexington and Concord, and more than one-third of all the patriots who gave up their lives on that fatal day, fell within its limits. The precious dust of the heroes of that first conflict for American liberty, sleeps in the old cemetery beneath the shaft which grateful hands have reared to their memories. The first capture of military stores and prisoners in the Revolution, was made in this town, - a supply train for Percy's troops, with its guard, being taken just in front of the present Town House.

During the rebellion, the patriotism of the town was displayed. Within ten days after the massacre in the streets of Baltimore, a town meeting was held, which voted to appropriate $10,000 to raise and equip a company of soldiers. The town paid for bounties the sum of $52,932,73. Of this amount, $30,026,73 were raised by tax, $22,906,00 were contributed by individuals. A military company was organized, which joined the Mozart Regiment, New York, and did faithful service.

When it was known that clothing and stores were needed by our brave defenders, the ladies of the town at once

responded to the call of patriotism. One hundred of them assembled and labored seven consecutive days in the work of humanity. A "Ladies' Soldiers' Aid Society" was formed, which raised $4,314,26, most of which was expended in materials to make up into articles of use for the soldiers. This association sent away fifty-one large and valuable cases of supplies.

Nor were the children of the town deficient in patriotic zeal. They held a " Fair," and the next year gave a " Promenade Concert," which together netted nearly $1,600 for the good cause.

This town added the honored names of twenty of her sons to the long and noble list of martyrs, who gave their lives for their country.
