PREFACE.

We herewith present to our patrons and the public the Ninth vol- ume of the WALTHAM AND WATERTOWN DIRECTORY, with the hope it may meet every reasonable expectation. It is scarcely necessary to state that the difficulties attending the compilation of such a work are very great, and not to be understood by any one unfamil- iar with the business. The re-numbering of the streets in Waltham has filled a great want, and will be greatly appreciated by all; also the new depot recently finished by the Fitchburg Rail- road, the removal of the old buildings opposite the depot, and by that means extending the area of the Common to the line of Carter street, the new Bank building and J. W. Parmenter's block, show signs of the city's prosperity ; the union of the Gas and Electric Light Company can be noted as another improvement. In Water- town quite a number of dwellings have been built, a Co-operative Bank established, by which persons of moderate resources will be enabled to purchase a home for themselves, and the recent purchase of the "Enterprise," by Mr. Fred G. Barker, who has printed it in the past, from Mr. S. S. Gleason, by whom it was so ably con- ducted for nine years.

Our sincere thanks are extended to all who have aided our can- vassers in the collection of information for the present number.

The following synopsis shows the number of names in the several communittes in the last and the present edition :
