PREFACE.

We present the Gloucester public with the first number of a Directory of all the inhabitants of this ancient town, together with many interesting sta- tistics. a record of the most important occurrences of the past year, a list of the various institutions, societies, business men, and many other items of great interest to all.

This is truly as its name imports, a Directory of the town of Gloucester, and we have spared neither labor nor expense, to make it correct, creditable and worthy a place in every business man's pocket, on every lady's work-table, and in every counting room and work shop on the Cape.

We hope to be enabled to meet the heavy expen- ses attendant on its publication by a ready sale and an appreciation of our labors ; although somewhat late with this first number, still we come out at a time when everything seems prosperous and bright for our town, and we anticipate a hearty assistance from all, so that we may be encouraged to continue the publication yearly. As so large a town as ours needs a correct directory, and the trifling expense to each, will, we are sure, not be begrudged for so important a work.

As we go to press so late our list of advertisers is necessarily small, owing to the little time we have had to canvass, still we have a fair show, and we

would invite our readers to a careful examination of our advertising pages, knowing that it will prove profitable to them and advantageous to all.

We tender our hearty thanks to James Davis, Esq., Cyrus Story, Jr., Esq., and many others of Glouces- ter, the Messrs. Garfield of Fitchburg, Adams & Sampson of Boston, and numerous other friends for courtesies received, and launch our little enterprise with the earnest hope that our efforts will be duly appreciated and material aid rendered.
