BUSINESS OF GLOUCESTER.

Mackerel Fishery.

The mackerel fishery is the most important busi- ness of Gloucester, and the business on which its prosperity chiefly depends. Although not particu- larly profitable, this business has increased very fast the last few years. Gloucester is the largest fishing town in the Union, and will soon take its place as the principal fish market, dealers already visiting us from all parts of the country. A large number of vessels are yearly added to the fleet which visits the Bay of St. Lawrence. Nearly 50 new vessels, an ag- gregate of over 4000 tons, requiring 600 men to man them, were added to the fleet last year, when near- ly 400 vessels visited the Bay ; a much larger num- ber will probably fit away this summer. In 1857, 64,- 599 bbls of mackerel were landed in Gloncester, In 1858 less than 55,000 bbls were landed, but owing to the better prices the net was about the same. Last year the number of bbls were probably larger, and the prices equally good.
