Georges' Fishery.
Quite a portion of the fishing fleet engage in the Georges' fishery in the winter, and find it a profita- ble, thongh a hazardous enterprize. Many vessels and many lives are yearly lost in this business - Three vessels and 25 men were lost on Georges' ear- ly in the year 1859. Their value was $11,400 Since 1830, 27 vessels have been lost on Georges' with all their crews ; this is exclusive of the vessels lost where the crews were saved ; a large number of men have also been washed overboard, and the loss of cables and anchors on Geo ges has been immense Most of the Geo: ges fish are kept in ice, and disposed of fresh as soon as landed.

Stone Business.
The stone business of Gloncester is, perhaps, sec- ond only to the fishing interest. It is carried on principally at Hodgkins Cove and Lanesville, and employs a great many people. Boston and vicinity is the principal market, though many paving stone are cnt for the Cuban and New Orleans markets, and occasional orders are received from Philadelphia and other cities ; Some dozen sloops and fifty men are annnally employed in transporting these stone. Rockport, perhaps, does even a larger business in this line.
Newfoundland Trade.
Quite an extensive trade has been carried on be- tween this town and Newfoundland, for a few years. All sorts of notions are taken there and bartered away for frozen herring, which find a ready market here, being capital bait for our Georgesmen. It is quite a hazardous business, as the ice frequently im- pedes the vessels' progress, but it has been quite profitable, Four fine vessels, valued at $18.500, and but partially insured, have been lost in the New- foundland and Prince Edward's Island trade.
Surinam Trade.
Gloucester has long been engaged in trade with Dutch Guianna, and has in fact but little other for- eign commerce. This business has been quite profit- able in past years, but is not a paying business at present, Hake is the principal article taken there, and molasses and sugar the staple articles brought home. The quantity of molasses imported into the district of Gloucester in 1858 was 187,756 galls ; the quantity of sugar was 428,991 lbs.
The ice busines is also carried on quite extensive- ly in Gloucester, there being five or six establish. ments engaged in this business The Georges fish- ery consumes a large amount of ice. There is no other business of any great moment save those inci- dental to the wants of a town like onrs.
