There is History in the .. Directory Publishing Business

It takes over a Century for a Directory to grow to the Impressiveness of the Cambridge City Directory of 1946.

It is a privilege to have a task such as producing the City Directory and History of the Citizens of Cambridge in this, the 100th Anniversary of the founding of Cambridge as a city. The progress made since 1846 is so tremendous, and the fame of our city has grown so great that we feel our responsibility in representing it with a worthy Directory.

Fitting ourselves for the position of compilers and publishers has taken more than 40 years of intensive experience. The following data shows our growth since 1905, and our preparation for just such a job as the

HISTORICAL

1846-CAMBRIDGE 100TH ANNIVERSARY-1946

"Firsts" IN CAMBRIDGE

A city is rated by its accomplishments in a material way, as well as in the ways of growth, expansion and AGE. It is worth recording from the records of the Harvard Trust Company that Cambridge has been in the forefront of progress all through its history as a city, and also as a community.

Some of the Outstanding "FIRSTS" that are worth enumerating are

1637 -HARVARD COLLEGE (Now University) established at Newtowne (Cambridge). Named after John Harvard who sacrificed much for it.

1638-PRINTING. Stephen Daye set up the press brought here by the widow Elizabeth Glover, and produced the first American book in 1640 in Cambridge, and the first American Bible in 1663.

1800 -VACCINATION. Dr. Benjamin Waterhouse inoculated his five year old son with vaccine in Cambridge. President Jefferson accepted vaccination in 1801.

1820 -COMMERCIAL VARNISH. Franklin Houghton and David Mc- Clure discovered formula which is now universally used.

1827 -PRESSED GLASS. Enoch Robinson made the first piece of - pressed glassware in America on April 20.

1845 -SEWING MACHINE. Elias Howe and George Fisher were granted a patent September 10, 1846 which brought fame and wealth to Howe.

1850 -TELESCOPE. Alvan Clark, the inventor, together with his two sons, acquired international honors. They brought fame to Cambridge.

1861 -CIVIL WAR. The first volunteer company of the Civil War was recruited by James P. Richardson, and on April 17, two days after President Lincoln asked for volunteers, left for the front with 97 men.

1876 -TELEPHONE. In common with sister city of Boston Cam- bridge shares the honor of the first telephonic conversation ever held. Thomas A. Watson was at the Cambridge office of Walworth Mfg. Co. when he talked with Alexander Graham Bell in Boston.

The above are outstanding of course but Cambridge has many other accomplishments to her credit, though they may not be Firsts. Today Cambridge stands first in New England in Education, third in industry, eighth in population, second in printing, second in transportation.
