Publishing and Printing in Industrial Cambridge

INDUSTRY IN CAMBRIDGE is almost as old as educa- tion in this country. Here, a few years after the Pilgrims landed on our shores, the first printing press was started. The Reverend Jose Glover sailed from England with a printing press in 1638. He was accompanied by his wife and a mechanic with two sons. Unfortunately, he died on the way over, but Mrs. Glover on arrival bought a house, married President Dunster of Harvard, and wedded the college to the printing press.

The mechanic, Stephen Daye, set up the press and his son, Matthew, aged 18, became the first printer in America. Here was produced the first American book, printed in 1640, the first American Bible, in 1663.

The history of printing and its activities in Cambridge is enormous, and shows that as a center of the art the city has no rival of its size in the world. The civilizing and educating influence thus created can hardly be exag- gerated.

ATHENEUM PRESS of GINN & CO. isprominent among the great establishments in Cambridge. . Founded in 1867 by Edward Ginn, this publishing house whose plant in Cambridge is the largest in the world devoted exclusively to the printing of school and college textbooks employs over 700 people.

LITTLE, BROWN & CO. a famous publishing name, has their plant, The Riverside Bindery, in Cambridge. It was founded in 1851 in a small wooden structure which was originally the old Almshouse. Their modern plant for the binding of their publications employs over 100 craftsmen.

RIVERSIDE PRESS, of HOUGHTON, MIFFLIN CO.

is one of the largest of its kind in the world. Founded by H. O. Houghton in 1852, it employs today over 700 people and has a daily average production of 18,000 volumes of literary importance and educational value. One of its important activities for 80 years has been the printing of the authorized G. C. Merriam Webster's Dictionary. The plant in Cambridge prints and binds the literary and educational books that have made these two names famed in these fields. .

UNIVERSITY PRESS is a revered institution of Cam- bridge whose roots go back to Pil- grim days. In 1638, the Reverend Jose Glover came from England to found a printing press in the new country. He brought with him Stephen Daye, and they established the press in the home of Henry Dunster, first president of Harvard. It was later owned by Harvard College and in 1802 became the University Press. Over the years the press has had many changes of ownership. The Welch Bigelow Co. period being 1802-1879, and John Wilson & Son, 1879-1895. In 1896 Herbert H. White became owner and manager and at that time built the present build- ing. In 1929 new management took over the press as University Press, Inc., continuing the fine heritage to the present time. Book printing and fine commercial work are carried on with the most modern machinery, equip- ment, and personnel.

HARVARD UNIVERSITY PRESS maintained for and by the college, is an outgrowth of the original purpose of the University Press. Its field of publication of technical and limited edition works is an important contribution to education and science.

Too numerous to record, the many other printing and publishing houses of Cambridge help the city hold a position of leadership in the industry with over 60 firms employing over 3000 people.

Thus printers ink with all its associated arts and ser- vice occupies a large part in the industrial fame and prestige of Cambridge.
