ON . THE . SURFACE

A BULLETIN OF IDEAS AND INFORMATION FOR BUYERS OF PRINTING ISSUED MONTHLY BY THE MURRAY PRINTING COMPANY AT 18 AMES STREET, CAMBRIDGE, MASSACHUSETTS

JULY

CARELESS WORK

THE other morning we laid aside three envelopes from our morning mail that irritated us. We are looking at them now, as we make a friendly comment, or criticism if you want to make it stronger, on the slipshod, care' less appearance that some firms permit in their correspondence. We presume we are easily ruffled by this sort of thing, because in our printing, accuracy is a prime requisite, and cor. rect appearance is in the same category.

One envelope was addressed in this fashion :

Murry Print 18 Ames Street Cambridge Mass.

We do a bit of business with this concern, but we are beginning to get sore about their careless treatment of our firm name. An address so recklessly mangled gives us the impression that anything goes in that office, and that is a poor impression to create in any business office.

The second envelope transgresses postal regulations in regard to properly addressing mail matter. Here again our firm name is incor- rect, and the street address is entirely missing.

Murray Print Cambridge Mass.

Any typist responsible for that kind of work needs waking up. Presumably the office is too small for any supervision of the correspondence, but such continued display of the thoughtless- ness, carelessness, laziness, or call it what you will, brings no credit to the firm paying that particular lady's wages.

1946

The third example is somewhat different:

Murray Printing Co. Wadsworth Street E. Cambridge

Well, we left Wadsworth Street in March, 1941, and never were located in East Cam- bridge. We know that in our office the staff is very keen on checking changes of addresses, and takes pride in keeping the mailing list cor- rect, but it is safe to assume that here is a con- cern that never checks its mailing list from one century to another.

We have given only three examples of care- lessness in addressing mail. In every mail the same indifference is in evidence. Many printers in their advertising have emphasized the slogan that a firm is known by the quality of its print- ing, but we are going a bit farther and claim that whether their stationery is good or bad, their typists can make it a great deal worse. Now why not speak to those young ladies and ask them to be as careful and correct in address- ing your mail as they are with their own make-up and hair do?

ON THE HONOR ROLL

Their alibi for existence is well expressed in their state- ment that "The vastly increased use of offset lithography in recent years by the publishers of books, together with the indication of an even greater trend in that direction, made it
