PREFACE.

THE printing of this Record was begun in 1869. During ten years portions, not always consecutive but including much of its first cen- tury, appeared in the New England Historical and Genealogical Reg- ister, the publishers of which, by their valuable cooperation, secured a wide presentation of what relates to perhaps the most interesting period.

The present volume contains the Record extant to 1789, including about thirty per cent. additional matter. The end proposed by the writer has been attained. If the original manuscript should, by disaster, perish, the type will show what it did, or did not, contain. This end, and the amount of time, labor and eyesight expended, must excuse the execution of an original intention to make a larger annotation, consid- erable material for which may appear in a work of a bibliographical nature that will, with this and one other volume, form the writer's contribution to the Literature of Charlestown for the year that includes its two hundred and fiftieth birthday.

The original intention was that this Record should be the first of perhaps four works, the others presenting the early manuscript history of the town, that of the rebuilding and some years later, and a local bio- graphical collection. The first is here printed. The second belongs to the Public Record Commission, on whose valuable official labors private work should not intrude. The third reaches perhaps too nearly the living present, but may, to some extent, be desirable. The fourth will be perhaps better supplied by the Bibliographical work mentioned, which will contain a guide to a large amount of matter already printed but hitherto uncatalogued. From the present source. consequently, only one addition to the Memoirs will, for a while, come, one that will accompany a narrative that has never been printed, and that tells its own story.

-

PREFACE.

The printing of the Record in this volume has been done from a copy of it made by the writer himself. The printer's revise has been corrected by comparison with the original, a second revise examined, and the impression then taken. The pagination following is a little irregular, owing to the manner in which the work first appeared, but the Record is, it is believed, complete and correct.

SUSAN HUNNEWELL, to whom this edition is inscribed, was one to whom it well may be. She was, at her death in IS70, one of the few descendants of the founders of the Church who remained in the town, and one of the very few whose ancestors had continuously received its ministrations, and had remained until a recent date in its member- ship-a membership that she cherished during more than fifty years.

To her memory, and that of the many also departed whose hearts, like her heart, loved and served this venerable Puritan Church, the long labor now ended has been gladly devoted by the writer.

JAMES FROTHINGHAM HUNNEWELL.

Susan Lamson, called Susan through life, although like her mother and grandmother baptized Susanna, was born in Charlestown Sept. 2, 1792, admitted to the First Church Feb. 9, 1817, married to James Hunnewell Sept. 23, 1819, and died Feb. 14. 1870. Her mother and grandmother, each a Susanna Frothingham, were descendants of W'm. and Ann F., signers of the covenant 1632, and, probably settlers, 1630. Her gr .- grandmother, Dorothy Mousal, was gr .- gr .- dau. of Dea. Ralph M., a member of the church, 1630; her step-gr .- gr .- grandmother his gr .- dau. Her other relationships to old church members were numerous.

Mr. Frothingham ( Hist. of Charlestown, p. 71) remarks that the Covenant, page 2, " was written sometime after 1632, as it evidently is in the handwriting of Rev. Thomas Shephard, who was ordained in 1659." and the important words [interlined) "are as evidently in the handwriting of Rev. Charles Morton, who was installed in 168G."

Attention is called to the record, 9 mo. 6, 1637 (page 5),-one of the few exact dates re- ferring to one of the most honored names of New England-John Harvard.

NOTE .- " Before 1663, all admissions to this church were understood to be admissions to all the privileges of church members. But the adoption by the church that year, of the Result of the Synod of 1662, respecting Baptism, &c. [sce Record of vote that date], led to a three-fold distinction of its members in the subsequent arrangements of its records, viz. : 1. " ' Persons admitted into full communion.'

2. "' The names of such Children of the Covenant as have publickly renew'd their Covc- nant wth God and this Church, yet not taken unto Communion in ye L'ds Supp.'-p. 101 [of Records].

3. " 'The names of such persons as have been admitted into this Church, but not unto full Communion.'-p. 179.

" By the second distinction, persons appear to have been intended, who having in infancy been offered in baptism by their parents, being church members, were considered as virtu- ally members of the church themselves, and subject to its inspection and discipline; and who owning the covenant at mature are were admitted to the privilege of baptism for their children, but not as yet to the Lord's Table.

" By the third distinction, all other persons were apparently denoted, who owning the covenant, were taken under the watch and discipline of the church, and obtained in it the privilege of baptism for themselves and their children, but did not commune in the Lord's supper.

" Apparently however, both these distinctions were sometimes confounded in recording, especially by Mr. Morton [1653-98]; and his successors, Rev. Messrs. Bradstreet and AGbot [1698-1741, and 1721-74], recorded the names of persons of both descriptions, with- out discrimination, under the common title of ' Renewers of the Covenant.' "-SEWALL & [J. F.
