1630. Rev John Wilson installed Aug. 27, 1630; removed to Boston Nov. 23, 1632.


1632-37. Mess" James and Harvard were ministers in Charlestown in this pe- riod-the former was settled, the latter, who died of consumption soon after his arrival at C., was only a supply for a time.


1634. Dee. 22, Rev. Zachary Symnes installed.


1638. Rev'd Mr Tho's Allen, minister of Norwich, arrived at Charlestown 1638, & ftaid there till about 1651, and then returned to Norwich where he continued till 1662, when he was ejected for non Conformity and Died Sp. 21, 1673, aged 65.


1642. 7 months of the year [Rec. of Baptisms].


1642-59. Here is a chasin, in the Records [Baptisms], of 17 years, during a part of whh period Mr Symmes was Minister ( Also,


1659, from June 7 months. ) Mr Shephard was ordained April 13th of this year. 1664. Es It appears that in the 4 preceding years, that Mr Shepard kept the records, and recorded the names of those only whom he baptized. It is 42

therefore probable that the names of those whom Mr Symmes baptized in this period are not recorded-whh accounts for the small number that were baptized [30 M., 23 F., 53 in all].


1670. " Mr Zachary Symmes died Feb. 4th this year, .Etatis 71." He was Pastor of a Chh. at Dunstable in Engd-came over to Charlestown, and was Minister there till Feb> 4, 1670. . . The Epitaph on his Gravestone mentions that he had lived 49 [y] and 7 months with his virtuous Con- sort, by whom he had 5 sons and S daughters. The following lines are added-


" A Prophet lies under this Stone Ilis words fhall live though he be gone."


1677. The Rev'd Mr Tho' Shepard died the 22d of Oet. [ Dec. ] this year, in which the small pox " raged with great malignity at Ch'town. One of Mr. Shephard's flock sick with it desired a visit from him. He thought it his duty to comply with his request, caught the disease and died, aged 43. The following lines on his death-


" Rather than run from 's work he chose to die Running on death sooner than Duty fly."

There is another chasm in the records [Baptisms] from Oct 22, 1677, to the 9th of March 1680-2 years and about 5 months.


1682. Records imperfect.


1685. The Rev'd Mr Tho's Shepard Jr. died the 8th of June this year, aged 27. His Epitaph- Great minds must like new stars, but look about, Be wondered at a little and go out.


Dear Shephard, sure we dare not call thee dead Tho. gone thou 'rt but unto thy kindred fled.


1686. There is a deficiency of 8 months in the records of this year. The Rev'd Mr Morton (who came over to Charlestown in 1685), was installed Nov. 5. 16SG.


1698. The Rev'd Simon Bradftreet was ordained to the Pastoral Charge of the Chh. in Charlestown Oct. 26th of this year.


1706. Mr Morton died this year aged 80. [For Latin Epitaph see Mass. Hist. Soc. Colls. viii., 75, and Budington's Hist., 225.]


1707. Note. "Mr Morton was bred in Engd and taught Academical learning at Newington, before he was forced to fly to New Engd by ye persecutions in the late reigns." Oldmixon's Hist., Vol. I. p. 115.


1713. The Revd Mr Joseph Stephens was ordained Oct. 13th, 1713, and died of the small pox Novr 16, 1721.


1721. Mr Joseph Stephens died of the small pox Now' 16 of this year, aged 40. Ile left but one child, a Son named Benjamin, who received his Education at Har. Col., An. Dom. 1740, commenced A B .- 1751 was ordained Pastor of the first Chh. at Kittery (had one only child, a daughter, who married the Rev'd Mr Buckminster, and died July 17, 1790)-rec'd the degree of Doet. in Divinity-died May 18th 1791 in the 7Ist year of his age-A very worthy amiable man-universally beloved.


1724. The Rev'd Hull Abbot ordained 5th of Feb'y this year. Died April 18th 1774, aged 72.


1739. Mr Tho's Prentice was installed in Oct. [3] of this year. Died June 17, 1782, aged SO.


1741. The Rev'd Mr Broadstreet died Dec. 31st of this year aged 72. He was an amiable man, & an Excellent minister.


1787. Mr Joshua Paine ordained Jany 10, and,


1788, Feb. 27. died of consumption, aged 24

THE DEACON'S BOOK, 1671.


BESIDE the Pastor's Record printed in the present volume there is a Book that was kept by the Deacons, and that contains their accounts. It is a tall, narrow folio (183×7} in. ) bound in vellum. and consisting of 191 leaves-many of which are blank. It begins with accounts for 1671. The receipts in eash for that year were 133,04.08; for 1673, 123,06.01., There is reference in it to an earlier book. The first account with a minister is that with the Rev. Thomas Shepard, as follows :--

Stitfon's contribution, that he is Credited " by bear a barrell and & at inr mor- tons eoming, 9: [and] "' by a barell of ftrong bear & a barell of fmall bear at the ordenation of the Revarent in' morton, 16s." .
