ANNUAL REPORT

REPORT OF SELECTMEN FOR 1959

The Town continues to be in good financial condition at the present time. In the Public Welfare categories, a noted drop in the cost of Aid to Dependent Children account and also a decrease in the Old Age Assistance account. Additional funds during the year were required to supplement the Gen- eral Relief and Veteran's Services accounts. The overall Welfare Budget as proposed for 1960 will be lower than the previous year.

Under highways, the reconstruction of a section of North Main Street is nearing completion. Holloway Street recon- struction was started during the year and its completion is tentatively scheduled during 1960.

The Selectmen recommend that a Chapter 90 project be made for the reconstruction of a section of South Main Street from the Freetown-Berkley line to Bryant Street to eliminate several bad curves and widen the road surface. We also recommend that a sum of $1000 be made available to widen, gravel, and oil Orchard Street.

We are grateful to the Berkley Girl Scouts, Boy Scouts, Explorers, their leaders, Mr. Robert Howland, the donor, for their interest in planting of shade trees on the Common to replace the many that have been removed because of disease.

At this time we wish to express our appreciation to all who have co-operated with us in the conduct of the Town's business.

TOWN MEETINGS 1959

1. ANNUAL MEETING

Article No.

Action Taken

1. Accepted report of Finance Committee.

2. Accepted published reports of town officers.

3. Accepted report of the committee on the building at Myricks:

"This building is the only town building in the Myricks section other than the fire station. We have inspected the building and found it in need of painting and minor repair, but it is structurally sound.

"The outside of the building, especially the trim, needs paint very badly. The chimney should be re-pointed. One section of galvanized gutter has rusted out and should be replaced. The front steps now extending the width of the building could be replaced by a six foot step at each door. The inside of the building could stand painting, but we feel it would be wise to make the building weather-tight first. The roof is in good condition. The heating system is serviceable but not very convenient. The furnace is old and located in a very awkward position.

"The building is used very little at present. It is supposed to be the meeting place of the American Legion, but they are not very active at this time. It is used by the tax collector once a month. It would probably be used a great deal more if it had a modern automatic heating system.

"We unanimously agree the town should keep this build- ing, and increase the budget for this year to $1,000.00. If the town does not wish to spend the money to maintain the building, then perhaps it would be wise to dispose of it rather than to just let it deteriorate.

"The addition of a heating system, toilets and a few par- titions would make it suitable for a town office building. If this building were on the Common, this would be our wholehearted recommendation.

"W. V. Hogan, Calvin Overlock, George Stetson, Com- mittee."
