ANNUAL REPORT

GENERAL INFORMATION

Birth Certificates

Presentation of a birth certificate is required for entrance to the first grade.

Vaccination

Every child who enters school for the first time must present a certificate of vaccination or a statement from his physician that vaccination is inadvisable.

No-School Information

When weather conditions are such that our buses are unable to run, a no-school notice will be broadcast over Radio Station WSAR, Fall River, and over Radio Station WPEP, Taunton. Parents are urged to use their own judgment about sending their children to school on stormy days. The fact that school is in session does not mean that attendance by all pupils advisable.

Transportation

The law requires that transportation be provided for pupils residing more than two miles from the school attended or more than one mile from the nearest bus stop. Many pupils living at lesser distances along the established routes are transported if the seating capacity of the bus will permit. From time to time it is necessary to refuse transportation to some of those living under the required distance when our buses are filled to capacity with children living at a greater distance.

Entrance Age

First grade registration in September of any year will be limited to those children who are at least six years of age or who will become six years of age on or before the following January first. There will be no exception to this ruling. Regis- tration must be during the first three weeks of school in Sep- tember.

ANNUAL REPORT

REPORT OF THE SUPERINTENDENT OF SCHOOLS

To the Citizens of the Town of Berkley:

I herewith submit my fifth annual report. Incorporated herein is the report of the Berkley School Committee, the Principal, the School Nurse, the Music Supervisors and reports of the School Physician and Dentist.

Personnel

By sending our seventh and eighth grades out on a tuition basis, we reduced our faculty by two teachers last spring. Miss Olive Kelley and Mr. Maurice Burke, being the teachers most recently hired, were released. Later in the summer Mr. Oscar Lamoureux, the principal, accepted a position at the Apponequet Regional School. Mr. J. Gerald Fleming, who had been teaching in Freetown, was hired to replace Mr. Lamoureux as principal and to teach the sixth grade.

School Program

With the departure of the seventh and eighth grades it was hoped that we could house the first six grades in the first floor rooms. This would allow us room downstairs for a special class which is required by law. Plans were made to have a remedial teacher this year and work into a special class program next fall. We have been operating remedial classes three days per week. At this time it looks as though we will have to abandon this plan to make room for a second fifth grade. We have some 45 fifth graders in one room. The room is very crowded and this number is well above the number recommended for a fifth grade. We should start this second fifth grade as soon as possible in the extra room in the base- ment. We will then run into the problem of no remedial room and no place for a special class in the fall. Aside from this crowding I feel we have a good elementary program in operation.

Building

Attempts are being made each summer to make some major repairs to the building. Last summer we replaced a complete window frame that was badly decayed. There are three more in the same condition and we hope to replace them

ANNUAL REPORT

soon. The hallways and certain other rooms were painted. The entire building was cleaned and many minor repairs completed. Mr. Wade and Mr. Swift, the custodians are trying hard to keep your school in a presentable condition.

Finances

The budget is still on the increase. By sending out the seventh and eighth grades and an increase in the number of pupils attending high school along with an increase in the per pupil cost of tuition the entire cost of tuition has risen by $17,660.00 over last year. Extra transportation in sending more pupils out of town has caused the transportation item to go up about $3,030.00. A third factor in increasing the budget is the increase in teachers minimum pay from $3600. to $4000. Al- though teachers salaries appear down in the actual budget one must remember we now have six regular teachers instead of eight. The remainder of the budget is about the same except for an increase in the cost of administration due to Freetown leaving Union No. 37.

Future

It was stated before in this report that we are sending grades seven and eight out on a tuition basis. This was done with the hope of creating more room in our elementary school. However, we closed last June with eight grades and 232 pupils and opened this fall with six grades and 202 pupils. We actually lost one room full of pupils instead of the two we had anticipated losing. As one rides about Berkley there is evidence of new homes being built in various places. New homes usually mean more children and consequently more classroom space. I believe the time has come for the citizens of Berkley to take another serious look at their school problem. Our period of sending seventh and eighth graders out on a tuition basis is indefinite and controlled by the State Board of Education. Our local school is again feeling growth and tuition costs are rising.
