Annual Town Meeting


ARTICLE 1. To choose all Town Officers, except those elected by ballot.


Voted: To elect three Measurers of Wood and Weighers of Hay: George A. Williams, Matthew McCusker and Willard P. Sheppard.


Voted: To elect three Measurers of Lumber: John C. Pafford, Shelley A. Neal and Daniel A. Maloney.


Voted: To elect seven Trustees of School Fund for a term of three years: Arthur L. Hale, Ralph B. Woodsum, Morrill R. Allen, Joseph B. Bramble, Charles G. Jordan, Carroll D. Welch and H. Irving Charnock.


ARTICLE 2. To hear and act upon the reports of the several boards of Town Officers and committees, and choose any committee the Town may think proper.


Voted: That Article 2 be taken up in conjunction with all other articles.


ARTICLE 3. To see if the Town will vote to authorize the Town Treasurer, with the approval of the Selectmen, to borrow money from time to time in anticipation of the revenue of the financial year beginning Janu- ary 1, 1949, and to issue a note or notes therefor payable within one year, and to renew any note or notes as may be given for a period of less than one year in accordance with the provisions of Section 17, Chapter 44, Gen- eral Laws .- Unanimously carried.


ARTICLE 4. To see if the Town will vote to authorize the Town Treasurer, with the approval of the Selectmen, to borrow money from time to time in anticipation of the revenue of the financial year beginning Janu- ary 1, 1950, and to issue a note or notes therefor payable within one year, and to renew any note or notes as may be given for a period of less than one year in accordance with the provisions of Section 17, Chapter 44, General Laws .- Unanimously carried.


ARTICLE 5. To see if the Town will vote to authorize the Treasurer, with the approval of the Selectmen, to borrow money for general munici- pal purposes under the authority of and in accordance with the provisions of Chapter 49 of the Acts of 1933 as amended, or take any action relative thereto .- Unanimously carried.


ARTICLE 6. To see what action the Town will take to establish the salaries of the elective Town Officers.


Voted: That Article 6 be considered in conjunction with Article 7.


ARTICLE 7. To see what sums the Town will raise and appropriate or transfer from available funds to pay interest and maturing debt, and for charges, expenses and outlays of the several Town Departments for the ensuing year and to appropriate the same. (For amounts appropriated, see Town Accountant's Report, Recapitulation. )

ARTICLE 7-A. To see if the Town will vote to accept Section 100-A of Chapter 41 of the General Laws, as most recently amended by Section 1 of Chapter 391 of the Acts of. 1945 permitting the indemnification of Officers or Employees for Damages, etc., Incurred on Account of Injuries Arising out of Their Operation of Publicly Owned Vehicles or Vessels .- So voted.


ARTICLE 8. To determine if any or all public offices in the Town may remain closed on any or all Saturdays in addition to the Saturdays heretofore voted upon affirmatively under Article 9 of the Annual Town Meeting of 1948 .- No action.


ARTICLE 9. To see what sums of money the Town will vote to raise and appropriate or transfer from available funds for the Braintree Post No. 1702, Veterans of Foreign Wars of the United States, for rent of a Hall to conduct meetings and other functions of the Post, or take any other action relative thereto .- No action necessary.


ARTICLE 10. To see if the Town will vote to raise and appropriate or transfer from available funds the sum of $600.00 to assist the following organizations in defraying the expences of Memorial Day in the amounts set against their names, namely, $250.00 for Braintree Post No. 86, Ameri- can Legion; $250.00 for Braintree Post No. 1702, Veterans of Foreign Wars; $100.00 for Antietam Camp No. 3, Sons of Union Veterans of Civil War, or take any other action relative thereto .- No action necessary.


ARTICLE 11. To see if the Town will authorize the Selectmen to enter into an agreement for the acquisition, installation, maintenance and operation of parking meters in the Town, or any part thereof, as they deem proper and expedient for the control of parking on the highways and to raise and appropriate money therefor, or take any action relative thereto .---- Not carried.


ARTICLE 12. To see what sums of money the Town will vote to appropriate from the income of the Water Department for the salaries' of the Water Commissioners .- No action necessary.


ARTICLE 13. To see what sums of money the Town will vote to raise and appropriate for the maintenance and operation of the Water De- partment, the same to be taken from the revenue of the Department and the unexpended balance of 1948, or take any action relative thereto .- No action necessary.


ARTICLE 14. To see if the Town will vote to appropriate from the income of the Electric Light Department, the sum of Three Hundred ($300.00) Dollars for the salaries of the Electric Light Commissioners .---- No action necessary.


ARTICLE 15. To see if the Town will vote to include in the tax levy for electricity used for street lighting, the sum of Eleven Thousand Five Hundred ($11,500) Dollars as appropriated under Article 7 of the Warrant for the year 1949 Annual Town Meeting, and that said sum to- gether with the income from sales of electricity to private consumers or for current supplied to Municipal buildings or for Municipal power, and from the sales of appliances and jobbing during the current fiscal year be
