The following comparative statement may be of interest to the voters of Chelmsford. The valuation in the Commonwealth on May 1, 1898, showed a decrease in the value of personal estate to the amount of $2,793,284.00, while the 1899 valuation shows an increase of $47,280.542.00. These figures, we think, are a sure index of the prosperity which has attended the business industries of the Commonwealth for the year ending May 1, 1899.

Highest rate of tax in the State, $32.50 on $1000.00, in the town of Munroe, County of Franklin.

Lowest rate, $5.21 on $1000.00 in the town of Gosnold, County of Dukes.

Rates from $6.00 to $9.60 assessed in 19 towns; $10 00 to $14.So in 2 cities and 98 towns ; $15.00 to $19.70 in 29 cities and 166 towns ; $20.00 to $24.00 in I city and 36 towns.

While our tax rate advanced $3.00 on $1,000 in 1899, we find that of the 32 cities and 321 towns in the Commonwealth, there are but 88 towns that have a lower tax rate than Chelmsford.
