REPORT OF THE SECRETARY OF THE SCHOOL COMMITTEE.
Middleboro, Mass., Feb. 3,'1916.
To the Citizens of Middleboro ;-
The following financial report of the School Board for the year ending Dec. 31, 1915 is respectfully submitted :
Attention is called to the fact that this year the last meet- ing of the School Board was held Dec. 30, so that every bill against the school department incurred during the year and forwarded to the secretary up to that date has been paid. The accounts represent, therefore, more accurately the true financial condition of the department than in pre- vious years.

The School Board each August calls for bids for furnishing wood to the several school houses for the ensuing year. The two local coal firms submit bids generally in May for furn- ishing coal to the Central buildings the ensuing year.
On account of purchasing less coal than the previous year the total appropriation was not expended.

The cost of books, supplies and printing this year was $2,405.21 which is much smaller than the expenditure of last year, $3,489.92.
With the increasing enrollment in the schools it is doubt- ful whether it will fall below $2,400.00.
The method of purchasing supplies twice a year from two jobbing houses in Boston and having the same shipped directly to the several schools has been found most practi- cal and satisfactory.

During the past summer vacation extensive repairs were made at the High School building aggregating $950.
The walls and ceilings of all the rooms on the two lower floors have been kalsomined, all the interior wood work has been varnished, a ventilated skylight has replaced the old one, gas fixtures have been rebronzed, exterior wood work painted and the roof and sides have been thoroughly repaired.
Nearly all the outlay on the Central buildings excepting a few minor repairs was confined to this building. Among the larger items for repairs on the suburban buildings were the installation of a coal furnace at the Plymouth Street

School and a complete renovation outside and in at the Thomastown School.
During the present year the following repairs will be nec- essary: A new floor in the Assembly Hall and a general renovation of the plumbing in the High School building, kalsomining the walls of the two rooms on the lower floor of the West Side building, a general renovation at the Union Street building and kalsomining the walls and varnishing the wood work in the School Street building. A new walk should also be made about the High School building. Of the suburban buildings the Highland and Wappanucket buildings should be renovated.
