The Selectmen's Message

The Board, comprised of Walter J. Borowicz, Chairman and Veteran's Agent; James B. Lanagan, Clerk and Walter Silveira, organized in February and initiated a program of progress for the year with particular emphasis on coopera- tion among all departments.

The deplorable condition of the town dump was rectified to a degree and further study is being made as to the various methods of rubbish disposal that could be instituted.

Quarterly departmental meetings instituted this year have created a greater spirit of cooperation and the sugges- tions for improvements of various services rendered to the taxpayers have been adopted.

Citizen participation in administration has been estab- lished with the appointment of a Shellfish Committee, Trail- er Study Committee and Sesquicentennial Committee with others to be named at a future date. These committees have been of inestimable value, full and serious considera- tion is given the subject at hand and a final comprehensive report rendered.

Full study is being made of and action instituted relative to the many varied problems confronting us, such as; clos- ing of the Infirmary, repairs to Coggeshall Street bridge, obnoxious odors emanating from fish processing, expansion of facilities at Union Wharf and the development of our waterfront and recreational facilities.

Arrangements having been made over 400 interested residents of Fairhaven traveled to Nantucket by steamer with the High School Band furnishing marshal music to

12

celebrate Nantucket's 300th Anniversary. An official pres- entation was made to the Town of Nantucket from the Town of Fairhaven of a Japanese Red Maple for planting at the Veterans' Memorial site.

Dedication of a plaque commemorating Captain Joshua Slocum was held with dignitaries from various distant areas participating. The success of this endeavor was spirited by Everett S. Allen and the many who aided him. To Mr. Allen we are deeply indebted.

We firmly believe that the objective of gaining the co- operation of the citizens as well as those in public service has been rooted sufficiently to allow future progress with ever greater goals to be attained, to make Fairhaven the finest and friendliest town in the Commonwealth.

In conclusion, we wish to thank the other Departments and the many citizens who have cooperated with us during the past year.

WALTER J. BOROWICZ, Chairman WALTER SILVEIRA JAMES B. LANAGAN

VARSITY CLUB

The Selectmen are justly proud of the Fairhaven Varsity Club which is celebrating its Silver Anniversary this year.

Starting in 1934 with thirteen athletes, the Club has steadily grown to its present membership. Instrumental in forming the Club were Coach Donald Dunn, Norman Blaha, former Superintendent of Schools, Flavel M. Gifford, Thomas McDermott, Tax Collector, and D. L. Kelly. Although softball, track, rugby and volley ball were included in its activities, the Club has been most noted for its football and basketball teams.

In 1942 the Fairhaven Varsity Club Auxiliary was form- ed, its membership being made up of wives, mothers, sisters and sweethearts of members. The co-operation of the Aux- iliary has been an asset to the Club through the years.

In 1945 the Varsity Club was incorporated, and with the help of public subscriptions, bought the building at 5 Rotch Street for a Clubhouse. In 1952 and 1953 plans were made for new quarters and on April 4, 1954 the new building was formally opened, most of the work having been done by mem- bers of the Club. The most recent addition is a newly- completed football practice field and a black-topped volley- ball court.

In 1955 the Fairhaven Varsity Club Scholarship Fund was started for a deserving girl or boy. This Fund is not limited to students with exceptional athletic or scholastic ability, but is designed for any student in need of help to- ward a college education.

The Club has always stood ready to help in any Com- munity project and has especially been interested in the

14

High School Stadium, having contributed to the purchase of a machine to line the gridiron; building and donating the refreshment stand at the Stadium and taking care of the expense of all canvas repairs for the Stadium; at present preparing the new canvas for use next Fall.

A large trophy case in the Varsity Clubhouse holds the following trophies earned by some of its great teams :

1956 - Touchdown Club Trophy - Greater New Bed- ford Semi-Pro Football Championship

1957 - William "Pop" Smith Basketball Trophy - City League Championship

1959 - South Eastern Massachusetts Semi-Pro Trophy

Each of these trophies had to be won three years in succession to receive permanent possession.

We would like to pay tribute to the Fairhaven Varsity Club for 25 years of accomplishment in Community advance- ment and outstanding sportsmanship.
