ANNUAL REPORT

Selectmen's Report

To the Citizens of Dighton:

The year 1916 has been an exceptional one in many ways, as is well known. We have, however, enjoyed a good degree of prosperity and plenty, manufactories have prospered, labor has been in demand and well paid, there has been freedom from contagious diseases and ample school privileges.

Generally our farming industry has suffered owing to high wages and scarcity of farm help.

A reduction is noticeable in our tax rate, caused, how- ever, we fear at a sacrifice of the good of some of our de- partments, especially the

HIGHWAY.

For general repair work a small appropriation was made and in proof of our statement we call your attention

6

ANNUAL REPORT

to the condition of Elm Street south from Main Street, Hart Street east from Elm and sections of Williams, Center and Wellington Streets.

Our Highway surveyors have been handicapped in meeting the reasonable requests for repairs for want of funds.

The macadam on Center Street has been repaired and an application of oil has been made to all macadam roads.

We wish to call your attention to the gravel road built between the Segregansett Railroad Station and Berkley and Dighton Bridge, demonstrating the ability of our Road Surveyors to construct a first-class road at a reasonable cost.

The coming year if you decide to improve a section of our highways by the use of macadam or gravel we can secure financial aid from the State under the small town Act the town having the option of taking the contract to do the construction work.

Three well constructed streets at the north village have been accepted by the town, Mount Hope, Bedford and Prospect Streets.

A new street has been built and accepted by the town forty feet wide and about eight hundred feet long from Elm Street to Somerset Avenue a few rods South of the east terminus of Brook Street at cost of three hundred dollars.

ANNUAL REPORT

STREET SIGNS.

The past year suitable street signs and guide boards have been placed in position in compliance with the law.

Our steady increase in population has made it nec- essary to provide more room at North Dighton for those. required to attend the

PUBLIC SCHOOLS. .

At the annual town meeting the needs relative to school accommodation in the North village was made plain by interested citizens.

It was voted to raise and appropriate $10,000 to furnish suitable room.

At an adjourned meeting $4,000 was added. A num- ber of other meetings were held relative to the school situation, 'and finally all votes were rescinded and the question was referred to the next annual town meeting.

A committee has been chosen and instructed to inves- „, tigate the cost and advisability of securing a current of

1

ELECTRICITY.

for lighting our streets and to furnish power for domestic and commercial purposes.

ANNUAL REPORT

A SOLDIER'S MONUMENT.

A native of Dighton, one of the 120 volunteers we furnished for service in the Civil War, has generously given a monument to be erected in front of the Town Hall inscribed with the names of those heroes who served in that great conflict.

Respectfully submitted, -

Report of Overseers of Poor

1

To the Citizens of Dighton: '

The year 1916 has called for an unusually large outlay for the aid and support of persons in needy circumstances, caused in part by the neglect of poor departments sending in bills contracted for aid rendered our poor, some bills · extending back two years. In this respect conditions have improved at the close of the year.

During the year 20 persons have either lost their settle- ment or become self-supporting and 5 have died.
