STEPHEN DEXTER ATWOOD

tephen Dexter Atwood

Dexter Atwood, the name by which he was best known, was born in that section of Carver called Pope's Point, March 30, 1856, a son of Stephen and Elizabeth Atwood. After leaving school he learned the trade of iron moulder which he followed during his early years in the works of the Ellis Foundry Co., and a short period of service in Maine. The monotony of the work was irksome to him, and attracted by the possibilities of cranberry culture he left his trade and began operations as a cranberry grower on the large New Meadows tract. By per- sistent labor he converted a good part of that waste into pro- ductive bogs and beautiful parks, and with one of the best equipped cranberry bogs he found his place at the head of those engaged in this industry.

He established a beautiful home in town and had planned to add to its attractive features by improving the surroundings. Mr. Atwood never found time to be lonely, and he never felt a longing to live in some other place; and so he can be consid- ered only as a loyal citizen of Carver.

He manifested an interest in public affairs, and any move- ment for community betterment found him a friend. He served on the Boards of Selectmen, Overseers of Poor and Assessors from 1907 to 1910, declining further service except as an Assessor, which position he held at the time of his death. He was one of the oldest members of Wankinquoah Lodge, I. O. O. F. of Wareham, and a charter member of South Carver Grange. In this latter organization he found a congenial field.

But as a friend and associate he made the deepest impression. Others can raise cranberries and assess taxes, but no one can be Dexter Atwood. He was a strong individuality ; he was a workman of orderly habits and always busy ; he was a per- sistent devotee of business; but he had a sense of humor, and he could be switched from the most serious discussion by a joke. No truer eulogy of him can be spoken than this compliment of a neighbor: "If anyone, in an emergency, wanted anything, Dexter had it, he knew where it was, it was in good condition, and he would gladly lend it."

He died in the service of the Town August 2, 1915.
