REPORT OF THE LOCAL MOTH SUPERINTENDENT
In 1915 the problem of the gypsy moth in the cranberry bogs proved a serious one. This is the most serious feature of the moth situation in the Town of Carver today. More bogs were infested this year and more work was done, nearly 10 tons of lead being used.
Both of the town sprayers were in steady use through June and a great deal of the wood adjoining bogs was sprayed to protect the vines from invasion from caterpillars. Over 40 bogs were more or less eaten and in certain cases the vines were greatly injured. Your superintendent was present recently at several conferences held by the committee of the Cranberry Growers Association with State Forester Rane and a plan of work was decided upon for 1916.
Briefly this provides that the State shall furnish sufficient funds to the Town of Carver to protect the bogs which are threatened with injury by the gypsy moth in the surrounding woods.
The work comprises cutting and burning in the winter time to a safe distance back from the shore, the area to be cut over
-59-
depending on the circumstances of the particular case, and spraying in May and June. The amount of spraying to be done this year cannot be stated definitely at this writing.
In addition it is to be expected that in the coming spring various bogs out of the many in the town not as yet known to be infested will be threatened.
We are promised by the State such additional light spraying outfits at half cost suited to work around the bogs as will be needed.
