REPORT OF THE ROAD COMMISSIONERS.

No investment will pay larger dividends than money expended in good roads. It should not be expended in a haphazard way. Road making should be considered a trade, and the work should be entrusted only to men of business principles. It is an enterprise that should be con- ducted on business principles with the latest improved machinery for the most efficient work, and every one should deem it an honor to be able to do anything to improve the highways of his town.

Your Road Commissioners are well aware of the great cost to maintain good roads in this town, as our materials are limited. Our clay, when it gets mixed well with our sand, makes good summer roads, but very poor winter roads. There ought to be appointed by the town some one to look into and see what are the best materials and how to obtain them, cost, etc., and report at some future meeting.

It is the opinion of your Commissioners that our town is somewhat deficient in sidewalks. There seems to be a lack of enterprise by some of our citizens to build walks in com- parison with other towns.

Our bridges, so far as known to your Road Commission- ers, are in good condition at this time, except the bridge near Erastus Chase's. This bridge we inspected Nov. 23d and found it in rather poor condition ; cap logs very much decayed ; the old stringers very poor indeed, new plank having been put in a short time ago to support them. Con- cluded to spike 2-inch plank on the sides of cap logs. and by so doing strengthen them so that the bridge would be safe for a short time, or until such time as arrangements can be made for a new bridge.

Every effort has been made by us to manage the affairs of the town that we were responsible for, in a manner that would meet the approbation of all good citizens.
