REMARKS.

The number of births entered upon record the past year is forty-six, against forty-eight of the year previous. Thirty- one of the total number recorded are males and fifteen are females. As a comparatively large- number of births are given in the foregoing list that do not bear the Christian name, the Clerk would still urge parents to be more partic- ular in having their children named previous to the begin - ning of the new year, in order to make the record complete, and to guard against the trouble that might arise in the future when the records are examined for important data.

Thirty-four marriages have been recorded the past year, two in excess of last year. The marriage rites were per- formed by the following named Clergymen and Justices of the Peace. The number married by each is as follows : Rev. Mr. Cutting, 6 ; Rev. Mr. Cook, 4; Rev. Mr. Snow, 3

Y MD

10 Thomas Ellis,

Dementia Senilis,

Rev. Mr. Crafts, 2; Rev. Mr. Smith, 2; Rev. Messrs. Rackett, Phelps, Andrews, McQueen, Hammett and Haynes 1 each ; J. H. Paine, Esq., 9; C. F. Parker, Esq., and A. I. Woodberry, Esq., 1 each.

Fifty-three deaths have been placed upon record the past year, and it is somewhat singular that the number is exactly the same as that of the previous year. The leading "cause of death" appears to be heart disease. Three deaths caused by "suicide," in one year, is without precedent in the records of this town. The age of the oldest male person is ninety-three years; and the oldest female is eighty-five. Out of the whole number of deaths twenty-seven were females and twenty-six were males. .

REPORT

OF THE

School Committee

AND

Superintendent of Schools,

OF THE

TOWN OF HARWICH,

MASSACHUSETTS,

For the Year Ending Dec. 31,

1895.

HARWICH, MASS : ALTON P. GOss, STEAM PRINTER. 1896.

REPORT OF THE SCHOOL COMMITTEE.

The School Committee herewith present their report for the year 1895:

The schools of this town have been kept thirty-two weeks, except the High School, which has been in session forty weeks.

The change in the East Harwich and Harwich Port schools, from two separate schools in each section to mixed schools, seemed to be necessary both on account of the decrease in numbers of pupils and as a matter of economy. If in the future the attendance in either of them increases sufficiently to warrant a change again, they can be divided as before. We have an efficient corps of teachers, parents seem to be interested, and the pupils as a whole are doing good work. Diphtheria in West Harwich and scarlet fever in East has made attendance in those schools somewhat broken during the last term of nine weeks. To have good attendance means oversight of parents, attractiveness of the schools, a growth in the interest of the pupils and in the worth of the results.

Attendance at school, even if enforced, is better than to be negligent and permit our children to drift into the ranks of criminals.

We must realize that efficient schools can only be secured by providing suitable buildings, aiding and instructing teachers, and by having the supervision of competent per- sons. Ninety-three per cent. of the school children in this state are now under the care and supervision of Superin- tendents.

56

It will be necessary to revise the course of study in the High School, and to employ an assistant teacher, to meet the changed conditions imposed by the Board of Education for entering the Normal Schools; also more room will be needed.

The difference between the amounts expended for Books and Supplies, as shown by the reports of the School Com- mittee and of the purchasing agent, is accounted for in the following manner :- The Committee's account is made up from the bills actually paid during the fiscal year by the Town Treasurer, including some unpaid bills of 1894, and excluding some purchases actually made in 1895, but not yet paid for ; the purchasing agent's account is made up from the purchases actually made by him during the calendar year, whether the bills are paid in that year or not, and does not include unpaid bills from the previous year.
