In December, 1859, DR. JOHN GREEN presented his choice library of some 7000 volumes, to the City of Worcester, on certain conditions, the principal of which were, that a suitable building should be erected for its safe keeping and use. and that the books should not be taken from the building except by himself. The library of the Lyceum and Library Association, consisting of between 4 and 5000 vols. was also donated to the city. The two libraries were accepted by the City Council, as the commencement of a free public library ; a lot of Lind on Elm Street, near Main, purchased for $5:00; the sum of $3000 appropriated for enlarging the library ; and a Board of Directors elected, as follows:
John Green, for life.

GROVER & BAKER'S SEWING MACHINE.
We have taken the Agency for the sale of these celebrated Manufacturing and Family Machines, and have also used them with PERFECT SUCCESS-in our Sewing Room for the year past. In recommending this Machine to the public, we do so because WE KNOW it is the BEST MACHINE for sewing any material, from the thickest leather to the thin- nest muslin, and to make the strongest and most perma- nent stitch.
The Machine is not complicated, ladies do not have to spend more time to keep the Machine in order than it takes to do the work. It is nearly noiseless in its operation, and ! any lady of ordinary capacity can learn to operate it in one hour's time; it sews silk, cotton or linen thread from the spools same as they are purchased, without rewinding; the seam has as much elasticity as the most elastic cloth. The
Price for a good Family Machine is only $50.
There are twenty-six patterns of G. & B. Machines made, so that we can accommodate all customers.
A Circular with full particulars and sample of sewing, and references to the names of some fifty people in Worcester and vicinity, who are using the Machine, will be sent to any address by mail on application.
