SCHOOL COMMITTEE
REPORT OF THE TRUANT OFFICER
Gentlemen of the School Committee:
I present my annual report for the year ending June 30, 1910:
Number of schools visited 1587
Number of absences reported by teachers 1216
Number of parents or guardians notified 1174
Number of children absent on suspicion 143
Number of cases of truancy 104
Number of children returned to school from street 48
Number of factories visited
89
Number of certificates issued 44
Number of children employed contrary to law. 19
I wish to thank Mr. Dixon for the shoes and clothing which he has given to needy children so that they were able to keep in school. May 28 I took one boy to the Essex County Training School at Lawrence for tru- ancy. Since the boy has been at the school he has become a member of the school band, which most of you have had the pleasure of hearing.
I think when manual training is introduced into the schools it will have a good effect in keeping such boys at school. It will also help to keep in school those boys who lose their interest in school when they become nearly 14 years of age.
Respectfully submitted,
JOSHUA L. CHASE,
Truant Officer.
