During the year 1955, The City acquired land at the worth and on high and Atkinson Street, and on myrtle Avenue, by eminent domain for the purpose of erecting a new elementary school. The work in relation to it included the various orders and sundry matter concerning the salle were prepared by me. In addition, on behalf of the City, I cooperated with the authorities of Essex County in acquiring land on Low Street for the purpose of building a new road along Low Street, under Chapter 90, of the General Laws. The year 1955, found the City Solicitor's office very busy with the various court actions and other legal matters which re mired a great deal of his time. On several occasions in relation to nis work, it was necessary for the City Solicitor to attend meetings of the various municipal bodies.
Respectfully submitted,
James P Pardon James P. Reardon City Solicitor, City of Newburyport.

REPORT OF BOARD OF PUBLIC WELFARE
To His Honor the Mayor &
Members of the City Council
This report of the Board of Public welfare for the year 1955 indicates that, while the case load might go down the cost of operating does not show a comparable decrease because of increased cost of some budgetary items such as an increase of $5.00 a week in Boarding Home rates, heavy medical costs, and hospitalization.
The total paid to physicians for all categories of relief amounted to $20,265.25, for medicine $18,210.98, for hospitals $40, 339.64, and for nursing home care $1.8,512.08. These items classified as medical total $127,327.95 which is approximately one fourth of the Department Budget. It should be understood that reimbursement on Federal-State programs reduces the direct cost to the City to an estimated 25% of the tot:1.
Because of many cases with Newburyport settlement aided in other Cities and Towns, there was a small increase in General Relief, but the over-all picture for all cate- gories remained about the same.
