Report of the Chief Engineer of the Fire Department


Melrose, Mass., Jan. 1, 1911.


To the Honorable Mayor and Board of Aldermen, City of Melrose :-


Gentlemen :- In compliance with the Ordinances the annual report of the Fire Department is respectfully sub- mitted for the year ending Dec. 31, 1910.


Organization.


The number of Companies are as follows:


One Steam Fire Engine Co., two Hose Companies, and one Hook & Ladder Co. Manual force consists of Forty-three men, one Chief, one First Assistant, and one Second Assistant Engineer, five permanent and one temporary driver, one Engineer and Driver, Twenty-eight Call men, five temporary Call men.


Apparatus.


Consists of one steam fire engine, three hose wagons, one exercise wagon, one hook and ladder truck, three pungs, twelve hand chemical extinguishers, one Beverly wagon, all in good repair.


Horses.


There are eleven horses in the Department, one of the engine horses having been condemned by the veterinary, was sold for the sum of One Hundred and Fifty-five Dollars. It will be necessary to purchase one horse for use on the engine.


Hose.


There is 4,800 feet of good hose and 2,900 feet poor hose in the Department. 2,000 feet of new hose should be pur- chased during the ensuing year.

Fires.


There has been answered by the Department during the year 1910, bell alarms, 61; still alarms, 75. Most of the fires were small owing to the prompt arrival of apparatus and men at the scene of the fire, for which the men are entitled to great credit.

Fire Stations


are in good repair with the exception of Hose 3 House, for which an appropriation has been made. Steam heat will be put in and the balance of the apppropriation used for repairs on house for the reception of the new auto combination to be installed there by vote of the Board of Aldermen.

Report of the City Auditor of the City of Melrose


To His Honor the Mayor and the Board of Aldermen :-


Gentlemen :- I have the honor to submit herewith a state- ment of the receipts and expenditures of the City of Melrose, beginning on the first day of January, 1910, and ending of the financial year on the thirty-first day of December, 1910, with a detailed statement of each department, a statement of assets and liabilities, a table showing the funded debt, the dates on which the notes and bonds are payable, together with a schedule of the city property.


In accordance with the requirements of Chapter 322, Acts of 1904, I have examined the several trust funds, under the control of the trustees of the public library, and find proper vouchers for, and bank books showing balances as reported by them on pages 219 to 220 of their report.


Following this report, is the printed report of 1909, as classified by the Bureau of Statistics in compliance with Order 6443.
