mee some returne, but what he said I cannot tell: But after a little tyme he continuinge his opportunity to satisfy his filthy lust, and to defile me, I did then heare and remember what he said, persuinge mee earnestly to yeeld to his filthy abominable motion; I told him I would not, and then he said he would not doe it without my consent, but after this he did agayn desire to fulfill his filthy lust: but I refused earnestly intreating him to lett mee goe: and it pleased God to keep in mee a resolution not to yeeld: and he did at length lett mee goe: I beinge I beinge now in a strange place that he led mee into, where I never was before that I know of, and night being come on, I went after him homewards till I came neere home and knew where I was, but he did noe more offer ill to mee, only he told mee that he could have done it whether I would or noe, and further Shee Sayth not.

This is the true relation of Sarah Smith against Robert Bartlett beinge attested on oath the 26th of June 1656

Before us JOHN PYNCHON ELIZUR HOLYOKE

The Confession of Robert Bartlett Concerning the said Crime:

He saith he ownes the greatest part of this relation of Sarah Smith against him; but not all of it: He confesseth he laid hold on her through the violence of the tentation, and that he threw her down and kissed her and that he did handle her nakedness, but sayeth he did not lye on her but by her, only his arme was over her and it may be some part of his body, but never the weight of his body: and he saith that he did urge her twice or thrice to yeeld unto him, but that shee refused, and desired him to lett her goe, and at last he sayeth God smote him with a trembling that at last he lett her goe. This is the truth of Robert Bartletts Confession taken the 26th June 1656

Before us JOHN PYNCHON ELIZUR HOLYOKE

There was noe testimony on eyther side to testify anything concern- inge this matter (The thinge being attempted about a mile from the Town) excepting something related by an Irish youth who could not be well understood besides what he said was contradictory to himself and he accorded not with the man and woman about the place where this wick- edness was attempted, they agreeinge therein.

The premises Considered we bound out the said Bartlett to attend at the County Corte in Cambride to answer for his miscarriage ingaging 2 sufficient suretys for his personall appearance there which bond we have herewith Sent:

The aforesaid Christopher Smith being a poor man and something weak did not prosecute against this delinquent as he might yet he think- eth he may justly demand 10 damages at least against this Bartlett which wee leave to the judgment of this Honored Cort,
