The Waltham Public Library is the union of three libraries. (1) The Waltham Social Library, founded in 1798, and the earliest Waltham library, was given to the Unitarian Society and later, in 1865, was presented to the town. (2) The early Boston Manufacturing Company's Manufacturers' Library was given to the Rumford Institute Library, which in turn offered all its books to the town in 1865. (3) The Agricul- tural Library of the Waltham Farmers' Club was presented to the town in 1874. The Public Library was first housed, 1865, in the Bank Building on Main Street. In 1879 it was moved to the corner of Charles and Moody Streets (Welch Block). In December, 1915, the Library was moved to the present building, which is the gift of a Waltham citizen, Francis Buttrick. The cost of the building was $124,000.

A Branch Library was opened in a second floor room in the Broderick Block, at the corner of Moody and Taylor Streets, in November, 1919. These quarters have proved inadequate for the service of South Side readers; so, after an unsuccessful attempt to secure legislative authority for a new building, the problem has been solved for some years to come through the adaption of a section of the new South Junior High School building to library uses. This new location, at the corner of High and Moody Streets, is expected to be ready for occu- pancy about September 1st. It will be thoroughly equipped and supplied with an increased number of books and magazines.

PUBLIC LIBRARY-HOSPITALS

There are now about 60,000 volumes in the Library. Over 200 periodicals are received. There is also an excellent collec- tion of pictures on every subject, arranged in classified form, which may be taken from the building. The Library under- takes to help all in supplying information and in looking up difficult reference questions when requested, either in person or by telephone.

The circulation in 1922 was 177,270 volumes, an average of 5ª books per capita. The City appropriates about $31,000 a year for the support of the Main Library and the South Side Branch. There are in addition three endowment funds for the purchase of books: The Lowell Clark Fund of $5,000, the Enos T. Luce Fund of $1,000 and the Jacob Whitney Fund of $1,000, which yield about $325 a year.
