BROWN, Edward. possessed an houselot March 17, 1642, on the east end of High street, of one acre, adjoining the houselots of Wil- liam Bartholomew and Mr. Bradstreet. He is a subscriber to Deni- son's allowance in 1648. He possessed land in 1654. He died Feb. 9, 1659.


27 day of July, 1638, Memorand that : Richard Lumpkin hath sold unto John Tuttle one house and a house lot with certain other lands, -- -one house lot lying near the great cove of the town river hay- ing a house lot now in the possession of William Avery on the south- west, Robert Kinsman's houselot on the north west, the town river on the south east, a houselot now in possession of Samuel Hall on the east, also upon the said lot one dwelling house formerly built by Richard Brown now of Newbury, and by him sold unto Mr. Richard Saltonstall by whom it was sold unto the said Richard Lumpkin.


John, was a commoner, 1641, and a contributor to Denison, 1648. was entitled to share in Plum Island, &c., 1664, and with the title or distinction of farmer, has the right of having horses on the common, 1697. He had land in 1649, adjoining land which William Fellows sold to John Pierpont. He had a houselot on town hill. 1657. Ile purchased. Dec. 5. 1663, of John Woodam and Mary his wife, a house and land in High street, on the south side, between Phillip Fowler and Phillip Call lately deceased. He died Sept. 13, 1677.


1677, November. John Brown of Ipswich, dying intestate, admin. granted to his eldest son, John Brown ; two daughters, £50 pounds each ; brother Nathaniel, his mother. £16.

The committee for seating the meeting house, January 16, 1700, assign seats to Nathaniel, sen'r, John, seu'r and John, glazier. Feb. 23, 1702-3, seats are assigned to William, Thomas, James and Sary.


Jonathan, married Liddia Kindrick, daughter of John Kindrick, April 6, 1694.

John 2, probably son of Thomas 1, was a commoner, 1661, and a voter in town affairs, 1679, when he has the addition of senior. He joined the church by taking the covenant, Jan. 25, 1673. He died June 23, 1684. In his will dated nine days previously, he mentions his father Brewer of Hampton ; wife Mary ; grand children, Edward Chapman, John Chapman ; son Jolin ; he appoints his brother Thom- as Lull and Simon Stace overseers. His widow died Dec. 10, of the same year.


1684, Oet. 2. Mary Brewer, widow of John Brewer deceased ""re- linguishes to .John Brewer and Simon Chapman husband of sd Brew- ers daughter," the estate bequeathed to her by her husband, in con- sideration of a bond to pay five pounds each. " that is ten pounds a

Corp'll Brewer was a surveyor of highways.


Feb. 1662. The constable was ordered, 1661, "to pay John Brew- er 20s for charges he is out about building the fort." He was one of the selectmen 1673, com'r 1679.


" Clarke Brewer" was chosen " Tithingman," Dec. 20, 1677.


Serjeant John Brewer was chosen town clerk, Oct. 2. 1683. Voted that sd John Brewer shall transeribe the Records which are in the two old Town Books: (the books being shattered to pieces,) into an- other book.


John 3, son of John 2, was married June 3, 1689 to Martha Per- kins, daughter of Abraham. He had lost a wife Susanna Warner. married Jannary. 1674, who died Nov. 20, 1688. 1697, Oct. 4, Mar- tha Brewer appointed adminis'r of estate of John Brewer, renders ac- count, estate €92, 16, 5.


1701. Oct. 8. " Martha Brewer alias Ingols," guardian of John Brewer, son of John Brewer : his part of his father's estate, £30, 18, 10. She was also guardian of Mary, daughter of John Brewer.


1723, September 27, died Abigail, wife of John Brewer.


BULLY, Samuel, married Elizabeth Webber, Feb 22, 1693, and had a daughter Elizabeth born May 17, 1696.


BUTTON, Mathias, commoner 16f1, was. according to Mr. Felt. a Dutchman, and removed to Haverhill in 1646. He sold land in Ipswich to Thomas Wells. June 14, 1641. He subscribed to Major Denisons allowance 1648, Dec. 29.


BUTLER, William and Sarah had a danghter Sarah born July 23. 1650 : and twin sons Thomas and Ralf. born Sept. 15, 1682, and a son Ralf, May 1684, William born June 1. 1676.


1710, Dec. 4. Stephen Herrick of Beverly, attorney to Mary Her- rick of Preston. Connce'tt, Ephraim Fellows and Anna his wife of Plainfield, Conn'tt, both daughters of Robert Cross of Ipswich : in consideration of twenty-three pounds current money of N-England. acquit to William Buttler of Ipswich, all claims on their father's estate.


In a list of commoners. March 9, 1707-8, are the names of William sen'r William junior, and Thomas Butler.


BURNHAM, John, was a soldier in the war against the Pequot In- dians. for which he received a grant from the town of eight acres of

lan 1, 1659. He subscribed to the compensation of Major Denison in 1618. He sold to Anthony Potter, June 1, 1648, "a house lot late of Humphry Griffin, situate near the water mill. Also a house lot con- laining three acres lying next the house lot of serjeant Jacob."


John, secundus, married Elizabeth Wells, June 9, 1069; was ap- pointed with others "to run the line between Glocester and us," 1665. Was a tythingman 1677 and 1695. He had :

He was a subscriber to the compensation to Major Denison, 1648.


On the 10th of March 1083, he enters into a "contract or agree- ment with respect of marriage intended betwixt Misheck Farley and Sarah Burnham," [born June 28, 1664, ] with Michael Farley, sen'r, by which they agree "to give the young couple a house lot and to build for them a house."


Mesech Farley, miller, son of Michael Farley, sen'r, and Sarah Burnham, daughter of Lieut. Thomas Burnham, sen'r, were married August 6, 1684.


Lieut. Thomas,* died May 19, 1694, his wife Mary, March 27, 1715, aged 92, (see epitaph 28.)

' 1685. Sept. Sarah Wait came into court, owned she had comited fornication with Joseph Burnham, son of Lt. Thomas Burnham. fined Los and fees.


John Wait and Catherine Carroll his wife came into court and owned there comitting fornication together-line dos each.

James 2, son of Thomas 1, joined the church by taking the covenant Jan. 25, 1678. He was overseer of the poor in 1698. His wife was named Mary. They had :

March 23. 1692-3, the town granted to twenty-three of the inhabi- tants as many "lots laid out by ye River side between Samuel Ord- way's shop and ye Town Bridge, beginning by ye Bridge and so by ye River side."


James Burnham had the 20th of these lots measuring 18 feet front. The lots varied from 18 to 28 feet ; the whole extending 498 feet.


He subscribed £2 toward the bell, 1699. He died June 30. 1729. aged 78, (see epitaph 39.) His wife died Nov. 1738, aged 76, (see epitaph.)


Thomas, married December 16, 1685, Esther Bishop, daughter of William Cogswell, widow of Samuel Bishop, [see note page 20.] They had children :

John of Chebacco, had a son Jonathan born Nov. 3. 1695.

Josiah of Chebacco died Oct. 25, 1692, and Abigail his wife the 21st day of the same month.


Robert, died 1691, June 12. Administration on his estate was granted Sept. 29, of that year to Frances, his widow. He left two

sons, Samuel and Jeremiah. By his will he gives to his son Samuel two hundred acres of land at "Lamperell river." He gives to his son Jeremiah, besides lands, &c., "all my carpenters tools," "he to main- tain his mother, my wife Frances Burnham, as long as sue lives." He possessed a house and land at " Oyster river." The witnesses to his will were Thomas Burnham, sen'r, Francs Burnham, James Burnham, who makes his mark, and John Newmarch, jun'r. The in- ventory of his estate amounting to £99 13, was made by Jacob Foster and Nathaniel Knowlton, March 21, 1681-2,


Doct'r Joshua died March 7, 1762, æ 51 yr 5 mo. Susanna his wife died May 19, 1759, æ 29.


BOWLES, Christopher, was an inhabitant 1678, had certain rights of commonage, 1697 ; and had a seat assigned to him in the meeting house, 1700.


Joseph Bolles died May 17, 1711-12, aged 5 yr 3mo. 11 ds, (sec epitaph.)


BUCKLEY, William, 1648, he subscribes to Major Denison's al- lowance. Herdsman, 1661. He had :

1679, Sept. John Barrye and his wife for fornication before mar- riage, fined £3 and costs and fees. He had rights of commonage as tenant of Samuel Bishop, 1678.

BEBBER, Capt. Isaac Van, lost a wife named Elizabeth, Aug. 21, 1737, and married widow Elizabeth Harris, Jan. 22, 1738. (See epi- taph 22.)


BRACKENBURY, William. was published with Abigail Heard. July 19, 1707, who died July 20, 1712, (epitaph 24.) He married for a second wife, Mary Walcut of Salem, with whom he was publish- ed August 15, 1730.


BISGOOD, Richard. 1641, 12th day, Ist mno, Barnabas Horton of Ipswich, baker, sold unto Moses Pingry six acres of land within the common fence. Richard Bisgood on the south east,

CALDWELL, John, purchased a house and land, Angust 21, 1651. of Cornelius Waldo, which he purchased of Richard Betts, bounded by land of Edward Brown south east; Robert Collins north west ; street west ; Thomas Lovell north east. He was a commoner, 1664, and a voter in town affairs 1679. and with his wife Sarah, joined the church in full communion, April 12, 1664.


1673, Nov. Granted to John Callwell all the salt marsh gras that growes upon the island cald Bagwels island, to him and his heirs for- ever.


His will is dated June 20, 1692 ; on the 7th of July, the inventory of his estate was presented : Sept 28 his will was proved. In it he mentions his wife Sarah, 3 (see Appleton Memorial, page 84,) who


§ She was the daughter of John and Sarah Dillingham, who came from Leicestershire, Eng., in 1630. In 1631 they were in Ipswich. where Sarah was born. John Caldwell 3, son of John 2, was born August 19, 1692, mar- ried Nov. 5, 1715, Elisabeth Lull, and was killed by the Indians in Maine, July 10, 1724. Their children were :

Nathaniel 2, son of John 1, was a commoner, 1707, and had a seat assigned to him in the meeting house, 1702. His will was proved Jan. 3, 1738. He married Abigail Wallingford, 1703, who survived him, and is mentioned in his will, a son John, and two daughters, Mary and Hannah.


CARTWRIGHT, Mistress, possessed a house in High street, be- fore 1659.


Michael was "paid 32s for work done at the bridge, and for car- riage for the gun," March 17, 1612.


€ CALEF, Joseph, son of .Robert of Roxbury, was a physician ; his name is in a list of such as had horses on the common in 1697 : he then has the title of Mr. and his name is spelt Calf. In the meeting house which was built in the year 1699. there was one tier of pews against the walls which were assigned to the principle inhabitants for the use

of their wives and families, while the men were obliged to take their seats in the body of the house. The committee appointed for that purpose assigned to " Mr. Joseph Caleff'ye 5th pew on ye so. east side of ye great door for his wife and family." Mr. Joseph Calefl himself, was appointed to sit in the fourth seat; his wife was named Mary ; their children were :

Joseph, born May 20, 1695, Samuel and Ebenezer, born Jan. 25, 1696,


and according to Mr. Felt. two others, Peter and Mary.


He died Dec. 28, 1707, in the 36th year of his age, (see epitaph 38.) He subscribed 9s to the bell, 1699 ; the name is spelled Cullife.


Robert died July 12, 1730, (epitaph 39.)


Samnel died Sept. 1, 1720, aged 24, (epitaph 40.)


Robert 2, son of Joseph 1. married Margaret, daughter of Deacon John Staniford, published Nov. 23, 1683, and had two children, who were both living 1730. Margaret was born Nov. 29, 1695, and died Oct. 7, 1727, (epitaph 39, A.)


#John 3, son of Robert 2, was born in 1725; married Margaret, daughter of Rev. Nath'l Rogers, baptized Dec. 14, 1729, died March 27, 1751. He was a physician and surgeon, and was in 1755, and several years after, representative of the town in the General Court. In 1755, Oct. 25 the town instruct him to oppose "the distressing and ruinous measures taken by Parliament against Ameria," and "to do all he can to repeal the acts passed or may be passed." When in 1768, the Earl of Hillsborough required the House of Representatives to rescind a vote respecting a union of the colonies, the House, June 30, resolve not to rescind by a vote 92 to 17. Doctor Caleff voted in the minority, and incurred the displeasure of his constituents by so doing.


Oct. 3, 1774, having been waited on by a committee of Ipswich, so that his views of late acts of Parliament might be known, gives them leave to have it published in the Essex Gazette of Salem, that he re- gretted voting, June 30, 1768. in favor of the royalists, that his pur- pose is to maintain the charter rights against the late acts of Britain. But being convinced against his will, it appears he remained "of the

same opinion still," for he continued attached to the royalist party. and when the revolutionary war broke out left the country and settled in the British province of New Brunswick, where at the the town of St. Andrews. he died in 1812, aged 87 years. He had a son Robert who died at Norfolk. Va. in 1801, at the age of 41. (Sabines Ameri- can Loyalist.


CALL, Philip. His will is dated May 6, 1662, and was proved Sept. 30, of that year. To his wife Mary, he bequeathes a house and land in Ipswich, and "land in Old England. to help bring up the chil- dren." He mentions a son Philip, born Jan. 17, 1659, and a daughter Mary. His houselot was in High street adjoining John Woodam. Philip, a shoemaker, 1683. -


CARR, George, 1635. is possessed of an houselot about half an aere butting upon the south upon the town river, on the east by a planting lot of his own, on the north by the planting lot of Daniel Clarke's. with liberty granted him to fence the said lot as low as the low water mark. provided he leave a way or gate for passage by the river side.


1636. He was possessed of an island of about 20 acres on the east side of Labor-in-vain, which John Andrews afterwards possessed and conveyed to Mary Webster, widow, Nov. 30, 1616. He removed to Salisbury. 1640.


CASS, Samuel, has a seat assigned to him in the meeting house. January, 1700.


CRESSY, William, had a right of turning horses on the common, 1697, and had a seat in the meeting house, 1700.


CATCHAM, John, subscribed to Major Denison's compensation. 1618. In 1647 be possessed land adjoining a grant to William Payne.


CHAPMAN, Edward 1, was a commoner, 1661. He died April 18. 1678 ; his will is dated April 9, and was proved April 30, 1675. His wife Mary died June 15. 1658 ; he left a wife Dorothy, daughter of Richard Swan of Rowley, with whom there had been a covenant and contract" before marriage. His sons were Samuel, his executor : Symon and Nathaniel : he left a daughter Mary. wife of John Barry.


Richard Swan of Rowley, in a will dated April 25. 1678, mentions daughters Jane Wilson. Frances Quilter. Dorothy Chapman and Mer- cy Warner. Shoreborn Wilson lead an account open with Robert Lord. January Is. 165%.

EARLY INHABITANTS OF IPSWICH, MASS.


" At a meeting among the select men of Ipswich, 21, 12, 1705-6, whereas Mr Thomas Hamond of this town is come to reside upon ye farin yt his late grand father, John Cross gave to his daughter, ye sd flamonds mother, sd Hamond being ye only surviving heir yt we know of to P. land and other lands of his late father Hamond dyed siezed of which was granted to Mark Symonds in or before ye year 1684,-which when granted these was comon land lying between sd land and Rowley lines and in January, 1644, sayd comon land was granted to Edward Chapman-about 16 acres.


Simon 2, son of Edward 1, was a voter in town affairs, 1679 : free- man May 12, 1675, and had a seat in the meeting house 1700. With Mary his wife had a son Samuel, born Oct. 29, 1680; Steven, born Oct. 30, 1685. Mary wife of Simon died Feb. 23, 1724.


Samuel 2, son of Edward 1, joined the church by taking the cove- nant, being one of the "young generation," January 25, 1673; com- moner, 1678. With Ruth Ingalls, his wife, married May 20, 1678, they had :
