The will of John Edwards, dated April 1, 1706, proved Jan. G. 1706-7 He left a wife, and sons, Samuel the eldest ; and John ; dau. Mary Wait, Lucy Kimball, Elisabeth Burch, and Hannah Wardwell. He makes Francis Whipple residuary legatee, and his son-in-law. Caleb Kimball, executor.

FARLEY, Michael, 1, came from England with his two sons, Michael and Mesheck, and settled in Ipswich about the year 1675.
It appears from the Registry of Deeds of Essex Co. under the date. April 27, 1682, that there was a covenant respecting a mill, between Richard Saltonstall, Esquire, on the one part, and Michael Farley and Michael Farley, jun'r, on the other part, dated June 24, 1675. This covenant expired March 26, 1682, when another was entered into be- tween same parties, including Mesheck, the younger son of Michael.
1683, March 10, Michael, sen'r, and Lieut Thomas Burnham, enter into a contract "with respect of a marriage intended betwist Mesheck Farley and Sarah Burnham, in which, upon compleating said marriage said Farley engages upon his paternal love and care of his said son. and for his further settlement, to give said Mesheck a small parcel of land, granted unto the said Michael by the Town of Ipswich, together with half such a sum as said Burnham should be at in ye building par- ties a dwelling house upon said land." The deed of the land was ex- ecuted March 8, 1698 9, by the said Michael, with the consent of his "now wife." This land remained the property of the family about 150 years.

Michael 1, died June 15. 1700. His wife died Dec. 12, 1736, aged 78 years. She was probably a second wife, and could not have been the mother of his children.
Michael 2 son of Michael 1. was born as early as 1654, and mar- ried Nov. 1708, Mary Woodbury of Beverly, who died in 1712 :

Ile subscribed 1. 10s. toward the bell. 1699. He died in 1736. An inventory of his estate dated January 28, 1736-7. exhibits a total of nearly £3500. His children were placed under the guardianship of Increase How. His widow married Abel Huse, jr. of Newbury. with whom she was published April 22, 1738.
Nathaniel 3. son of Michael 2, was published Nov. 7, 1754. with Elisabeth. daughter of Jonathan Cogswell. Esq .. then deceased ; she died in 1763. and he married Mary Wise, published Nov. 17. 1764.

She died Feb. 26, 1745 He died May. 1757, and left sons Michael atel John, and a daughter Jane. wife of Samuel Heard, married Mch 1717. His will, in which he styles himself "cordwayner," is dated April 10. 1751, and was proved Juue 4, 1757. The following are extracts :- " Being aged, &c., I give to my son John Farley, my dwelling house I now live in with thirty rods of land, bonnded southerly by John Safford's land, * westerly by ve highway, &e., also one half my out- lands (excepting my four neck rights) with one half of all my house- hold goods, and leather. and shoes, and tools, and cattle. except what I shall hereafter give to my daughter Jane Heard. to be equally divided between my two sons Michael and John ; but if my son should die without having a child. then I give all that is given to him to my son Michael Farley and his heirs forever. I give to my son Michael Farley and his heirs for- ever, my four neck rights at Jeffries Neck, and the other half of all my outlands what I have given to my son John Farley, and the other ,

and honourable, his neighbours, and his Country, with such integrity, zeal and diligence, as merited an extensive approbation and rendered his death justly regretted.

Gen. Farley held for many years the principle offices of the town : was feoffee of the Grammar School, representative to the Provincial Congress and General Court from 1766 to 1779. High Sheriff of the County, Major-General of the Militia, and one of the Executive Council which exercised the functions of government during the revo- lutionary interregnum, 1775-80. Felt in his History of Ip-wich. gives a brief but interesting sketch of the Gen'l and his wife. p 1st

FAWN, John. Had a houselot granted in 1634 in High street, on the north side, between Mr John Baker and Mr. Thomas Braes. which lot he sold to Thomas Firman. He possessed also a farming lot of 25 acres at Chebacco, which his assignees sold to John Webster In 1650, Oct. 10, with the title Gent. he quit-claims to Jomm Whipple an houselot in Ipswich. He also possessed an houselot adjoining Mr. Appleton, six acres near the mill. near where the railroad station now is, adjoining General Denison's lot. He removed to Haverhill. His wife, according to Farmer, was named Elisabeth and one of bis daughters married Robert Clement.
FANCY, Thomas, died about 1700. He possessed an house amd land ; his wife, Elisabeth. administered on bis estate. April 22. 1700. [See Thomas Fossy. ]
FELLOWS, William, 1. was a commoner, 1641, and 1664 H :- will is dated Nov. 29, 1676, and was proved Nov. 27, 1677. He left sons, Ephraim, Samuel. Joseph, Isaac ; daughters Mary, Eli-abeth. Abigail and Sarah.

Joseph 2, son of William 1, had a wife named Ruth, married Aug. 19, 1676. He was entitled to certain rights of commonage in 1664, and was a voter in town affairs. 1679, freeman. May 26, 1682. He died in 1693. The inventory of his estate, amounting to £791, 15, was rendered by Ruth, his widow, Nov. 7 of that year. His children living in 1697, were :

The widow Ruth charges April 15. 1697. to keeping three children 3 1-2 years to this time £15. She died April 14, 1729, and is mentioned on the record as an "ancient widow."
Isaac 2. son of William 1. was a voter in town affairs, 1679 and possessed rights of commonage. 1697 and 1707, and with the title of Corp'l has a seat appointed him in the meeting house. 1700. See list of Tythingmen. p. 34. He married Joanna Bourne Jan. 29. 1672. They had

FIRMIN, Mr. Giles, took the freeman's oath in Boston, March 1. 1633-4. He was, according to Farmer, son of Giles who came Som Sudbury, England. in 1630, and settled in Boston, where he was chu. sen Deacon in 1633. and died in September. 1634. Hle was born in Suffolk, England, educated at Cambridge. It appears from the 5 1. lowing extract from a work by him, published many years after !. return to England. entitled " The Real Christian, or a Treatise of Effectual Calling," that he did not come to America until after his father's decease. Speaking of his father with reference to some "christian duty." the performance of which was a subject of contro. versy, he says : " When he was dead. his minister who wrote to us the news of his death, said this of him. He lived much desired. he died much mourned for Yet this, my godly father, would scarcely be ... teemed for a serious christian by some for not performing that duts according to the question. though I suppose a year or two before his death he did take it up. but then I was far distant from him." p. 515 He settled in Ipswich. where he practiced physic. Jan 4, 1635. 100 acres were granted him near Mr. Hubbards farm. He was a com- moner in 1641, and continued to reside in Ipswich until about 1654. when he returned to England and became a minister when more than fifty years old. Afier his return to England be sold his house and six acres of land in Ipswich to Mr. William Goodhue. [See Goedline ) In a sermon before the House of Lords and Commons and the Assem- bly of Divines at Westminster. he said : ".I have lived in a country seven years, and all that time I never heard one profane oath. and all that time never did see a man drunk in that land." He died at Ridze- well, England. in April. 1697. His wife was daughter of Rev. Nath'l Ward .-- Farmer.
Firmin. Thomas. took the freeman's oath at Boston. May 22. 1639. was commoner with the title of Mr. 1641. He was a merchant and seems to have possessed large property. He purchased of John Pro- tor. May 1 1647. a dwelling honse with about two acres of land, being the lot situated next southerly to where the stone bridge now is. [It is now the residence of Capt. Samuel N. Baker. ] Ile sold at the same time to Proctor a farm. He purchased of Richard Hatfield in 1639, a house and lot being in the "cross street leading to the mert- ing house, bounded by the highway leading to the mill on the sonth." Oet. 5. 1617. he sells to Thomas Low and Edward Brage twenty acres lying upon the Mile Brook towards the south west ; and Nov. 20. 10 Thomas Howlett and William Goodhue 22 xeres of marsh. part of

FITT, Robert, said by Farmer who spells the name Fitts, to,have been of Salisbury in' 1640 : was a commoner of Salisbury. 1640-52 ; was among those "voted to be townsmen and commoners" of Salis- bury, 3d 12 mo. 1650. and is assessed 11s 3d in Mr. Worcester's rate for £30 the 25th'Dec. 1650. Also in a rate made 18th 5 mo. 1652. for his half year due 24 : 4mo 9s. 7d. His name,- spelled Fitch, is in a list of the inhabitants of Ipswich. who have shares in Plum Island in 1664. He died May 9. 1665. His will in which the name is spelt Fitt, was proved June 26, 1665. It has a seal attached to it, the de- vice of which is represented by the above figure. He left a widow named Grace who died April 25, 1684, and a son Abrabam.
Abraham 2, son of Robert 1. married Sarah Thompson, dau. of Si- mon Thompson, and came from Salisbury to dwell in Ipswich at the request of his father-in-law, who conveys to him an house and land which he bought of Humphrey Griffin containing three acres, having the Rocky Hill towards the west, John Fuller south. the highway east and north east : together with other lands. He joined the church in full communion February 22. 1673. freeman March 11. 1673-4, and died March 27, 1692. The inventory of his estate exhibited a total of £366, consisting of a house, orchard. and 50 acres of upland and meadow : he also possessed land in Salisbury.

FISK. Joseph, with his wife Susanna, lost a son named Joseph. December 5, 1698. He had a soat in the meeting house assigned to him in 1702 ; aud his name with the title Mr. is ou a list of com- moners in 1707.

John Fairfield, probably father of Walter, died about 1662. The inventory of his estate dated November 30, 1672, amounts to £211, 5, 6. He had "land in ye great meadow and upland undivided with his brother, valued €52; his house and land were appraised £200; his children John and Elisabeth were of Muddy River near Boston, 1692.

FOSTER, Reginald, according to an article in the New England Gen Register, vol. 1. p. 352, was descended from an ancient and respectable family settled in the west of England. He came from England in 1638 ; and with his family was on board a vessel embar- goed by King Charles 1 : he settled at Ipswich with five sons and two daughters : Abraham. Reginald. William, Isaac, JJacob, Mary and Sarah : his daughter Sarah married_William Story, ancestor of Judge Story. Mary, married (1) a Wood, and (2) Francis Peabody. He resided near the bridge, and is one of 24 of the inhabitants who in 1646. "promise carting voluntary toward the cart Bridge, besides the rate, a day work a piece." Hle was a commoner in 1641. In 1648, he and his son Abraham are subscribers to an allowance for Major Denison. 1661. he was a surveyor of highways ; his name with the names of his sons. Abraham, Reginald. Isaac and Jacob, are in a list of the inhabitants that have shares in Plum Island, &c., Feb. 14, '64. The saine names are on a list of those that by law are allowed to have their votes in Town affairs, Dec. 2. 1679. October, 1664, JJudith, his wife. died. He lived, says the writer above quoted, to an extreme old age ; but the time of his death does not occur on our records.
Abraham 2, son of Reginald 1, was born at Exeter, England. about 1620, and died in Ip-wich, January 15, 1719, aged 90. He joined the church in full communion. April 12. 1674 : his children were :

He was a Deacon of the church, and his name-Jaakob ffoster .-- is is among the Selectmen, 1679. He gave by his will to his sons Abra- ham and Jacob, "land at Muddy river that was my father Foster's adjoining to land that was my father Lord's."
