ARTICLE IX. Duties of Officers


Section 1. The President shall preside at all meetings of the Church and Trustees, and appoint all committees, unless other- wise ordered. In his absence the Vice-Presidnet shall assume the duties and responsibilities of the President.


Section 2. No change. Section 3. No change. Section 4. Strike out the words "nor to contract for any repairs or alterations of the property of the Parish, the expense of which shall exceed the sum of one hundred dollars, ".

Section 6. In the event a vacancy should occur in any office the President may appoint any member in good standing to fill that vacancy for the remainder of the annual year. The Society shall be notified of any and all appointments by the Clerk who shall post a notice in some conspicuous place, in the vicinity of the place of worship, for 30 days.

ARTICLE X. Nominating Committee


A Nominating Committee of three persons chosen by the President at each annual meeting shall present at the next annual meeting at least one nomination for each office to be filled by election at that annual meeting. the report of this committee shall be in no way precluded by a nomination from the floor by members of the Church. The report of this committee shall be submitted to the Clerk at least one month prior to the annual meeting.

There was some discussion of the advisability of moving the Universalist Church building to a lot adjoining the Federated Church. No action was taken.

ARTICLE V. President Quinn explained the proposed amend- ments to the Articles of Agreement of the Federated Church of Orleans, Mass. It was VOTED to accept the proposed amendment, namely :


Strike out the whole section and substitute the following :


ARTICLE II. Section 1.


A. To carry out this purpose, eighteen persons, elected by the Federated Church at its annual meeting, shall constitute a Joint Committee.


B. At the annual meeting of the Federated Church, six persons shall be elected for a term of one year, six persons for a term of two years, and six persons for a term of three years. There- after, at every succeeding annual meeting six persons shall be elected for a term of three years .


C. No persons shall succeed themselves as members of the Joint Committee at the end of their full three year term, but shall be eli- gible for another three year term after a lapse of one year.

Mr. Harry H. Snow reported on the installation of heat at the Universalist Church building. He also spoke about the plumbing and the floor.


It was VOTED to allow the Treasurer to pledge $3000 of collateral to pay bills for work on the Universalist Church and to use the Henry K. Cummings bequest of $1000. (Votes to date have allowed the Treasurer to pledge $7000 collateral in all.)


The meeting adjourned at 8:45 P. M.

Mr. Jordan offered a prayer. The call of the meeting was read.

It was VOTED to authorize the Treasurer to redeem the bond which has matured and place the fund in the savings department of the Hyannis Co-operative Bank.


ARTICLE IV. It was VOTED to adopt the proposed amend- ment to the "Articlesof Agreement for the Orleans Federated Church", namely : Article VI. MEETINGS. Section I remains the same, and Section II (a new section) be inserted to read as follows: "Section II. The Moderator of all meetings of the Orleans Federated Church shall be the Chairman of the Joint Committee. ARTICLE V. Eldredge Sparrow, Treasurer, spoke about the advisibility of securing a safe deposit box for the private papers of the Universalist Society. It was VOTED to authorize the treasurer to secure such a box.


The treasurer reported that the collateral debt re the Universalist Church is down to about $1600.


Several chairs have been moved from the Universalist Church to the Federated Church, -- primarily for the use of the Sunday School. Inasmuch as the cane chairs are more fragile than the others it was suggested that the cane chairs remain in the Universalist Church building. President Quinn offered to speak to the Supt. of the Federated Sunday School, Mr. Edwin N. Pierce about the chairs.


The meeting adjourned at 8:40 P.M.

ANNUAL REPORT OF THE UNIVERSALIST CIRCLE 1959 Sixteen meetings were held during the year by the Circle. Fifteen were held at the Cole Parish House, and one at the home of Mrs. Margaret Loomis, preceded by a delicious luncheon served by her. A summer sale at Cole Parish House netted #80.50. A table at the Christmas Fair, through the courtesy of the Federated Ladies' Aid, netted #35.53. Expenditures for charities such as: Red Cross, etc. $54.00 "Cheer Basket.", etc. $29.31

Orleans, Massachusetts January 18, 1959


The Annual Meeting of the First Universalist Society of Orleans, Massachusetts, was held on the above date in the Universalist Church building in Orleans. The meet- ing was called to order at 8:05 F. M.


Present were : Mr. & Mrs. James L. Melcher, Mr. & Mrs. Howard W. Quinn, Mrs. Arthur L. Sparrow, Mr. Eldredge E. Sparrow, Mr. & Mrs. Harry II. Snow, Mr. Edward C. Blake and Miss Lillian F. Edwards.


The call of the meeting was read.


ARTICLE I. Mr. Howard W. Quinn was elected President.


ARTICLE II. Miss Lillian F. Edwards was elected Clerk. Mr. Eldredge E. Sparrow was elected Treasurer. Mr. Harry H. Snow was elected Vice-Pre- sident. Mr. Edward C. Blake was elected a trustee. (making 5 trustees in all)


ARTICLE III. The reports of the Clerk and Treasurer were read and accepted.


ARTICLE IV. President Quinn spoke briefly about the merger of the Universalists and Unitar- ians and offered literature.


Mrs. Arthur L. Sparrow, President of the Universalist Sewing Circle, gave a report on the yearly activities and reported "206 in the Treasury.


The following deacons were appointed :


Moncrieff M. Cochran, Jr. Eldredge E. Sparrow


Alternates :


Harry H. Snow Edward C. Blake


The meeting adjourned at 8:30 P.M.
