HISTORY OF CANTON.

feet, and twenty-six feet high. At the east end is a stage eighteen and a half feet deep, with opening thirty-two feet wide. On either side are ante-rooms, and above these dress- ing-rooms. The doors between the stage and ante-rooms are arranged to slide up and give a stage nearly the width of the building. At the opposite end is the gallery, provided with seats for two hundred and twenty-four persons. The floor of the hall is furnished with one hundred and forty-four settees, each seating five persons, or seven hundred and twenty people. The ordinary seating capacity of the hall is nine hundred and forty-four persons. The building throughout is finished with ash, and the floors are of southern pine. Three large furnaces are used for heating the building, one of which is arranged to heat the whole lower floor (except the small hall), also the audience hall, ladies' private room and lobby on the second floor. The building is supplied with gas.

BOUNDS OF THE PONKAPOAG PLANTATION AS DESCRIBED BY ELLIS AMES.

" The Ponkapoag plantation consisted of the 6000 acres before men- tioned, and was wholly in what is now Canton. Its bounds, as laid out by the Dorchester Committee, about the year 1657 or 1658, and as the same was surveyed by John Butcher in 1696, were as follows : -

" It began at a point on the northerly side of Ponkapoag Pond, about twenty-five rods southwesterly of the point where the line dividing Ran- dolph and Canton crosses the pond, and then ran, what was in 1696, west eleven degrees north, 336 rods, bounding northerly on land then of Capt. Foster, to the old road ; then, continuing in the same course two hundred rods, until it came to the Poukapoag Brook ; thence, continuing the same course fifty-two rods more, to the corner of land of John Hol- brook (and during said 252 rods last mentioned, bounding northerly on lot No. 5, which belonged to Daniel Preston, Samuel Paul, David Jones, and Mr. Proctor) ; thence, continuing the same course, and bounding northerly on land of John Holbrook, a distance of forty-seven rods, to a point within about twenty-five rods of Burnt Swamp, so called. This was the north side of Ponkapoag plantation, and was a straight line 635 rods, or about two miles long.

" From the last-named point, then turn and run south twenty-eight degrees west one mile one quarter and sixty-two rods (as follows, viz., thirty-six rods on lands of John Holbrook ; 125 rods on lot No. 6, be- longing to Thomas Andrews, and 301 rods on Lot No. 7, belonging to Richard Baker), then turning and running south four and a half degrees west, 166 rods ; thence south thirty-four degrees west, 264 rods, to a point within about forty-eight rods of the stream on which stands the Stone Factory, so called. This was the westerly side of the Ponkapoag plantation, and it was about two miles and three quarters in length.

"Then turning, and running south forty-four and a half degrees east, seventy-two rods, to the stream on which stands the Stone Factory ; thence up stream by the waste-way of the Stone Factory, the waste-way of the Revere Copper Works, and the Iron Works of the Kinsley Iron and Machine Company, to the point on Washington Street where the natural stream crosses said road or street ; thence up stream to the point where Beaver Brook, flowing by what is now the Shovel Works, origi- nally met the Pequit Brook, flowing down from what is now the Reser- voir Pond ; thence up stream, - up Pequit Brook -a distance of about seventy-two rods ; thence east twenty degrees south, a distance of eight hundred rods, to a point about thirty rods distant from the Range line, between the fourth and fifth ranges, which line of eight hundred rods,

sometimes called the Dorchester line, crossed the road leading to Dor- chester Swamp, now in Stoughton, just south of the cemetery, now called Pleasant Street, and coincided with one of the southerly lines of what is now the town poor farm of Canton, which was formerly owned by Roger Sherman, the signer of the Declaration of Independence, and which line of eight hundred rods was the northerly bounds of part of Lot No. 31, be- longing, one hundred and seventy-five years ago, to Widow Pelton ; of Lot No. 52, of 325 acres, belonging to William Robinson and Samuel Robin- son ; of Lot No. 53, of six hundred acres, belonging to Capt. Capen and John Capen ; and of Lot No. 54, of seventy-three acres, belonging to John Blake, and at its easterly end was the northerly head of the fifth range. This was the southerly side of the Ponkapoag plantation, and measuring by a straight line from the southwest corner to the easterly corner, the side overruns three and a half miles in length by about fifteen rods.

"Then turning so as to make, with the last-named line, an angle of about eighty-two degrees, it runs one mile and five eighths of a mile, crossing the York road a distance of about fifty rods ; then turning west- erly about a right angle with the last-named line, and running one mile and sixty six rods on the southerly side of Capt. Clapp's farm, so called. At the end of about one quarter of a mile from the said turn you come into the road leading through the Farms, so called, and go across the road. At the end of said mile and sixty-six rods you turn so as to make an angle of about 115 degrees with the last line, and then run one half a mile and ten rods to a station on the northeasterly side of the road leading from the Farms to what is now Ponkapoag village ; then turning fifteen degrees more easterly than the last-named line and running fifty rods ; thence turning thirty-three degrees more easterly of north than the last-named line, and running 125 rods to the margin of Ponkapoag Pond, at a point about fifteen rods southerly of the ancient and natural mouth of the brook, leading through Ponkapoag village; thence running across the pond in a straight line by the shore of the pond and crossing the mouth of the brook, and thence again by the shore of the pond to the place of beginning. This was the easterly side of the Ponkapoag plantation, and it was more irregular than either of the other sides. By running a straight line from the southeasterly to the northeasterly corner of the plantation, it measures three and a half miles in length ; and for many years after all the territory of Canton, Stoughton, and Sharon was laid out or sold by the proprietors of the common and undivided lands to indi- viduals, the Ponkapoag plantation, which never belonged to the proprie: tors, remained in the exclusive possession and occupation of the Indians."

This Ponkapoag line is delineated on the map of Norfolk County pub- lished by Smith and Bumstead in 1858.
