Cornelius3 and Samuel3 settled in the eastern towns, where their descendants remained except the few that went to other states. And the majority of the Hol- brook family now living outside of the New England States, in tracing back to the third generation, will find Peter2 their ancestor.

THE HAMILTON FAMILY.

Col. Amox Hamilton came to Palmer when young and was a clerk in the store of Converse Bros., at the Old Center in 179 -. He commenced trade in his own name, assisted in capital by some Brookfield parties. From his stock in trade he disposed to the good people of the town shelf goods and family groceries, which included New England rum, said to prevent or supply the loss of the shrinkage on sugar.

Mr. Hamilton was probably a descendant of John Hamilton of Concord that afterwards settled in Brookfield in 1701. He was a grandson of Amos?, whose family registers and town records are unknown to me. He was town clerk for many years-from 1809 till the decline of life. He lived and died at his home that he preferred to any other location.

Upon their arrival they found a party consisting of Rev. Jonas Fitch. Thomas Bingham, Robert Allyn, Maj. John Mason and others, about to leave Saybrook, to locate upon a tract of land some twenty-five miles to the north-east. This party the previous year had been to the destined location, purchased and surveyed a tract of land nine miles square, and returned to Say- brook, leaving several of their number on the territory until they should all come and take possession. The newly arrived emigrants joined this company and settled permanently upon this nine mile tract, now known as Norwich, Ct.

a few years he lived in Belchertown has been a worthy citizen of the town of Palmer. He d. May 23, 1883.

An article in the Springfield Republican that week had the fol- lowing sketch that expresses the sentiment of his associates. An extract :-

Nathan Howard, who died at Thorndike Wednesday, aged 79, was a rare specimen of sturdy New England manhood. Thirty- eight years of his life were identified with the growth and interests of Thorndike and full fifty years with the town at large. His brains and hand shaped much of the village development. Since 1845 every resident manager of the great interests of the Thorn- dike Manufacturing Company has looked to him for advice in many matters and found rare wisdom and judgment. Town-wise he was well known, and his name often appears on the town records in an official relation. He never sought office, but when once a trust was placed in his hands it was wisely handled and faithfully carried out. A man of strong convictions and few words, what he did was done from the highest motive and with strongest purpose.
