THE PARSONS FAMILY.

Joseph and Benjamin Parsons were early settlers in the New England colony. They also belonged with the company of people that settled Springfield. * Joseph served on the first committee for the organization of Brimfield. Benjamin was employed to make a set of measures for Mr. Holyoke to measure his portion of the grain for grinding.

The descendants of Benjamin settled the Connecticut valley south, and the time when the people began to select farms in this town Aaron and Benjamin, his descendants, petitioned for the or- ganization of the town. But before action was taken Aaron se- lected a home on lands set to Wilbraham.

Benjamin settled east of the Old Center and his land was granted to him by the General Court. He buried most of his children when young. David and Israel were in the Indian war and died at Fort Edwards in 1755. Moses died on his return home from from the siege of Havana.

THE RUGGLES FAMILY.

Silas Ruggles, M. D., was a descendant of Samuel Ruggles of Roxbury, one of the number, with Lamb & Co., who made the Indian purchase in 1687 and laid claim to the tract of land that now includes the town of Palmer. He was son of Solomon Whit- ing and grandson of Solomon Ruggles of Hawley.

Solomon W. was a man of ingenuity, and sought out many inventions, which proved to be of more benefit to the public than to himself financially. Some of the grants of patents that are now in the cabinet of the late Dr. Silas Ruggles may be found the im- proved rotary fan blower, patented 1854; a pickpocket detector; a cheese press, the weight of the cheese to do its own pressing; a stump extractor (the same power is now used in hay presses). In 1856, was the Ruggles patent windmill; it was sold in the Western States for $25,000, and with its improvements it is now in use at the present time. Also a water balance as a substitute for a water wheel. Aside from these patents and others, he had inventions

RUGGLES.

with patents applied for that were sold to other parties, who re- ceived the patents in their own names. Among these designs was one for irregular turning. He fitted up a machine for this pur- pose, which he sold for $125.

Frederick, his youngest son, was an artist. He settled in Three Rivers Village, and was in successful business until his death.

Dr. Silas was born in Hawley, and the family removed to Fitch- burg when he was young. He had but few advantages in the com- mon schools, and when he was not at work his desire for an educa- tion led him to improve his leisure moments in study, to prepare himself for a business life. He was employed when young in the palm-leaf business, and from thence to the Putnam machine shop at Fitchburg to learn a trade.

He afterwards attended Harvard College, and was a graduate of the Eclectic Medical College of Philadelphia. He practiced medi- cine at Hubbardston four years with success, and then removed to Thorndike in the fall of 1866. He then settled in Three Rivers, 1872, where he spent the remainder of his days. As a country physician he was ranked with the best, as he was evidently the choice of a large proportion of the people. Aside from his prac- tice in this locality, he has displayed a genius in the line of inven- tion, and also attracted the attention of the citizens in plans for the improvement of the town, which have been adopted to a con- siderable extent. In relation to the management of his farm, he was the type of a New England yeoman. In matters pertaining to the village where he resided, he has done more than any other man for building up the place and making it a desirable location.

THE ROBERT SMITH FAMILY.

Robert Smith, Sen., born in the north part of Ireland, 1672, and died Dec. 21, 1759. His father came from England in 1658. His son Robert was married in 1691 and had four children-James, Patrick, Margaret, and one that married a Mr. Parkhill. Margaret married William McMitchell. Patrick married twice and died childless.

2, James, married Margaret Brown, of Scotch descent. The parents, two sons and their wives, two daughters and two grand- children left their native land for the New World, 1718. They had already signed the memorial to Gov. Shute of the Massachu- setts Colony, which added enthusiasm for the new settlement. During the voyage the aged mother died, and her grave was the briny deep.

We learn nothing of their location in this district till 1728, when they purchased their farms from a specific grant that had been made to Col. Samuel Patridge by the General Court and before the district was organized. James, the eldest son of Robert, Sen., married Margaret Brown, 1715, in Antrim, Ireland. SMITH.

Smith by the following lines, written in the round, plain hand- writing of that day :

" JAMES SMITH His Book God give him Grace hereon to look

Not to look, but to understand

That Learning is better than houses or land.

When houses are gone and money is spent, Then Learning is most excellent."

The Bible is now in the family of the late John W. Smith of Monson .- [Information by Mary J. Seymour. ]

The book was probably a treasure to Mr. Smith and a guide to his Christian life, as he was deacon for many years and an elder in the church.
