Particular Sewers

The number of house connections made to buildings for the year was 314 in wards as follows: Ward 1. 85 Ward 4 50

Ward 2. 17 Ward 5 74

Ward 3. 16 Ward 6. 72

The total number of feet laid in these connections was 14,488.8 at a cost of $13,439.44, thus making the average cost per foot $.93. Average length per connection 46.0 feet Average cost per connection $42.80

Buildings as follows:

Single houses 246 Garages 5

2-family houses 25 School

1

3-family houses 3 Comfort station 1

4 apartments and over 21 Clubhouse 1

Stores 6 Business 5

The number of sewer connections installed this year fell off con- siderably due primarily to the decline in building.

Maintenance

Cleaning and maintenance work on the system is being done at present and the remarkably open winter has facilitated this work.

Storm Drainage

Five and eight-tenths miles of storm drains were built this year, ranging in size from 10" to 60" in diameter. One of the most im- portant pieces of work was the piping and covering of the brook between Wilson Avenue and Holbrook Road, Montclair. This re- lieved a very unsanitary and dangerous condition and will allow the proper grading of the Montclair Playground through which the brook flowed.

A tabulation of the amount of drainage work done according to length, size and character of material used may be found in the City Engineer's report.

A tabulation of Common and Particular Sewer Construction is included with this report.

Respectfully submitted. FREDERICK E. TUPPER, Commissioner of Public Works.

CITY OF QUINCY

REPORT OF THE CITY PLANNING BOARD

To His Honor the Mayor and Members of the City Council:

GENTLEMEN :- During the past year the City of Quincy through its Mayor and City Council has accomplished several important public improvements, some of which have been previously recom. mended by this Board such as:

BEALE STREET WIDENING

The widening of Beale Street from Hancock Street to Newport Avenue and the construction of a new highway bridge over the railroad tracks has fulfilled a long desire and will develop into an excellent commercial center for the Wollaston District. This will help to care for the parking situation in this locality. Herewith are photographs of this improvement before and after construction.

GRADE CROSSING ELIMINATION

The work of eliminating the grade crossings in Quincy has actu- ally started this year. This is an improvement that has been under discussion for the past thirty years. The work started con- sists of a subway under the tracks at Depot Street, the erection of a shelter station on the westerly side of the tracks, and the im- proving of the present station. At School Street a new highway bridge has been erected with an increase in height and width. Con- tractors' bids have been received for the construction of a new highway bridge at Water Street and a new station at Quincy Adams. This work will be started about March 1, 1932. In the progress of this work a drainage system will be installed that will take care of the surface water on Penn's Hill east of the railroad location.

PARKING

The purchase and development of the so-called Shikes and Long property on Granite Street is a step in the right direction, being located so it may be used for the latter extension of Franklin Street.

STREET WIDENING

This Board recommends and approves the widening of main thoroughfares and considers with approval the work that has been done this year by widening:

Adams Street from Whitwell Street to Common Street.

High Street from Franklin Street to the Braintree Line.

South Street from Scammell Street to Main Street.

COMFORT STATION

The City Council has given this matter considerable attention in the past and, although not having definitely decided on the loca- tion, they have made an appropriation this year for this much- desired improvement.

REPORT OF CITY PLANNING BOARD

ZONING

The much discussed Zoning Ordinance for the City of Quincy was taken up very thoroughly by the 1931 City Council. An ordi- nance was prepared and submitted to the people by referendum, but was again defeated.

We do not feel that this is the final disposition of Zoning for Quincy.

The Board wishes at this time to congratulate the City Forester, Andrew Stewart, and his department for the splendid work they have done in the construction of the various beautiful and artistic flower beds all over the City. There are 62 of these plots located in many sections.

METROPOLITAN DISTRICT COMMISSION

The Metropolitan District Commission has considered many of the recommendations of this Board and have started the construc- tion of the Redman Farms Golf Course, of which nine holes will be ready for play in the Spring. The contractors' bids for the Club- house have been received, and this will also be built by Spring; an illustration of this building is submitted herewith.

Administration Road has been resurfaced to Randolph Avenue and the name changed to Chickatabot Road. Furnace Brook Park- way has been resurfaced from Adams Street to Quarry Street and from Copeland Street to Willard Street. The name of Purgatory Road has been changed to Wood Road. The Rest House at St. Moritz has been constructed and is a very attractive building. This will be ready for this year's winter sports.

The Sewer Division of this Commission have started the con- struction of the new Pumping Station at Squantum. This will be completed in the early part of 1932 and will make it possible for the whole of Squantum to be connected with sewer. The City has been installing laterals in contemplation of this construction for the past four years.
