On June 30, 1939, the following internes were graduated and received diplomas: Dr. Aaron Levin and Dr. Frank D. Elkavich, who completed eighteen months of rotating service, and Dr. Haig Bozigian, who completed twelve months of rotating service.
On December 31, 1939, the following internes were graduated and received diplomas, having completed eighteen months of rotating service: Dr. Jack Gurwitz, Dr. Francis X. Walsh, and Dr. Morris Taylor.
It has been the custom to collect two and one-half dollars from each member of the Active and Courtesy Staffs of the hospital, with which a substantial gift may be made to each graduating house officer in recognition of favors and service to visiting phy- sicians in the hospital. These gifts were made in 1939.
The Internes Committee wishes to express thanks to the Super- intendent of the Hospital, who acts as secretary for this Committee, for help in contacting the different medical schools and keeping files and records of prospective candidates.
Respectfully submitted, CHARLES S. ADAMS, M.D., Chairman, RICHARD M. ASH, M.D., ROBERT L. COOK, M.D., FRED P. COSTANZA, M.D., WILLIAM J. HARKINS, M.D.,
JOSEPH P. LEONE, M.D., Secretary.
REPORT OF THE STAFF PROGRAM COMMITTEE
To the President of the Staff of the Quincy City Hospital: DEAR SIR:
1939 saw an improvement in the attendance of Staff meetings. There are still several Active and Courtesy Staff members who attend infrequently, if at all.
The meetings have been of considerable instructive interest, mainly addressed by prominent members of the profession out of Quincy.
The Clinical-Pathological meetings have been reorganized into instructive teaching of the internes by members of the Active Staff.
Respectfully submitted,
J. EDWARD KNOWLTON, M.D., Chairman, ROBERT O. GILMORE, M.D., WILLIAM L. KRIEGER, M.D., FRANCIS G. KING, M.D.

REPORT OF THE AURAL SERVICE
To the President of the Staff of the Quincy City Hospital: DEAR SIR:
During the year 1939 the Aural Service was very efficiently served by Dr. Robert O. Gilmore, Dr. James M. Ward, and Dr. Walter L. McClintock. Their cooperation and spirit is excellent and does much for the improvement of the service.
During 1939 there were 644 children, twelve years old and under, admitted for tonsil and adenoid operations. The Aural Service, ex- cluding private patients, admitted 389 patients, 323 of which were tonsil cases.
The total number of Aural patients, private and service, that were discharged during this year was 1,181. Of this number, there were two deaths and one hundred cases that had consultations.
I would like to express my thanks and appreciation of the ex- cellent cooperation from the Aural Service members and the Staff members, as well as the Nursing and Hospital Staffs.
Respectfully submitted, WILLIAM J. HARKINS, M.D., Chief of Service.

CITY OF QUINCY
REPORT OF THE PEDIATRIC SERVICE
To the President of the Staff of the Quincy City Hospital:
DEAR SIR :
The statistics for pediatric admissions and discharges for 1939 are as follows: Service Admissions 130
Discharges 218
Included in the figures for discharges were pediatric private cases and transfers from other services. Also, there were one- hundred and twenty consultations. There were twelve deaths of which seven went to autopsy.
During the year the Quincy City Council approved of the pur- chase of the Sears Estate, adjoining the hospital grounds. It is hoped that the building on this estate will be repaired and rede- signed with a view to its ultimate use as a convalescent home for women and children. There are many service cases that are now kept in the wards for a considerable time that would probably re- cover more quickly in the atmosphere of a convalescent home. The cost per child in such a home would be much less than the same stay in a hospital ward. Occasional laboratory check-up could easily be made on children resident in such a home, and the Pediat- ric Service could make a weekly visit.
Respectfully submitted,
EDMUND B. FITZGERALD, M.D., Chief of Service.
REPORT OF THE HOSPITAL LIBRARY
To the Board of Managers of the Quincy City Hospital:
GENTLEMEN :
The Hospital Branch of the Thomas Crane Public Library has completed fourteen years' service to the patients and staff of the Quincy City Hospital.
In September of this year, Miss Gertrude Henrikson resumed her duties as Hospital Librarian, after completing her studies at the Carnegie Institute of Technology Library School where she had specialized in hospital and medical library work.
The book service to patients is still on the five-day week basis, with each patient having an opportunity to change his books three times a week. Many of the patients have been so delighted with this library on wheels that they have expressed the wish that a home service to convalescents could be inaugurated. The hospital librarian feels that such a follow-up plan would be well worth the extra time and expense involved, and she cherishes the hope that such an innovation might be established sometime in the near fut- ure.
The children are particularly responsive as is best illustrated by the avidity with which they pour over their books. Even the young- est ones clamor to be remembered, so picture books are in constant demand.
REPORT OF CITY HOSPITAL
231
To be sick is disheartening enough, but to be in a hospital and to be partially or totally unfamiliar with the English language is even more bleak. The foreign books loaned to such patients range from the popular Finnish and Italian to the less called-for Syrian and Polish, and all have had their share towards shortening the long hours for this foreign-speaking group.
There are now more than 1,494 books and a number of magazines in the present library collection, nine periodicals being subscribed for annually and other used copies being donated by friends. The permanent collection is continually being supplemented with books from the main library.
The total circulation figures for the year 1939 show an increase of 1,017 over last year. The number of books and periodicals circu- lated during this same year is as follows:
Adult fiction 9,236
Adult non-fiction
4,494
Juvenile fiction
2,548
Juvenile non-fiction 464
Total 16,742
Respectfully submitted,
GERTRUDE HENRIKSON, Hospital Librarian. Thomas Crane Public Library
REPORT OF WOLLASTON HOSPITAL AID ASSOCIATION To the Board of Managers of the Quincy City Hospital: GENTLEMEN :
The Wollaston Hospital Aid will close the 1939-1940 season on Thursday, May 2, 1940.
Meetings have been held on the first Thursday of each month from 10 A.M. to 3:30 P.M. There is a short business meeting at 2 P.M. and the rest of the time is devoted to making the various articles for the hospital.
Transportation to and from the hospital is taken care of by one of the members.
A short report on the Wollaston Hospital Aid was given at the March meeting of the City Federation by the president, Mrs. R. E. Martel.
A donation was made to the Respirator Fund. Sunday afternoon lectures at the hospital were attended by several of our members.
We find the work very interesting and hope our efforts have benefited our hospital.
Respectfully submitted,
SELINA MARTEL, President.
