HARBOR MASTER'S REPORT


January 9, 1940.

Dear Sir:


The report of the Harbor Master of the City of Quincy for the year ending December 31, 1939, is herewith submitted.


Receipts by water for the year were as follows:


City Fuel Company 12 Barges. 10098 tons coal


Standard Oil Co 55 Steamers and Barges


Quincy Lumber Co. 3 Schooners, 1,171,700 ft. lumber


The waters off the Fore River Plant were patrolled during the following launchings at the request of the company officials:


March 4. S. S. Cristobal


April 4. Aircraft Carrier Wasp


July 18 S. S. Exporter


September 16. S. S. Explorer


November 15. U. S. S. Benson


December 28. S. S. Exchange


The Quincy Dry Dock & Yacht Corporation had 290 Steamers, Barges, Fishermen, and Yachts in for overhauling and repairs.


There were 255 Yachts stored in the boat yards on the Town River besides many others on Neponset River and elsewhere in the city.


The Fore River Bridge had 299 openings.


Made 15 trips with the power boat going to the aid of yachts in distress, aground and capsized; and one on fire, where picked up a man who had jumped overboard, put out fire and towed boat in to Quincy Yacht Club.


Picked up 4 row boats; all claimed.


Reported various beacons extinguished and buoys out of position.


January 15. Trimount. Dredging Company started dredging Town River to 24 feet.

The sum of $6,950.80 was paid to the City Treasurer for the use of the County and the sum of $667.20 was paid to the City Treasurer for the use of the city. The sum of $4,083.00 was collected for hunter's licenses. The fees amounting to $465.25 were paid to the City Treasurer and the balance to the Commonwealth.
