CITY OF QUINCY
THE DEPARTMENT OF HISTORICAL PLACES
January 18, 1943
HON. CHARLES A. Ross, Mayor, City of Quincy, Massachusetts
Dear Sir:
The Board of Managers of the Department of Historical Places herewith submits its third annual report.
During the past year the stone wall around the premises, which was in a deplorable condition, was reset-the interior of the John Quincy Adams Birthplace, so far as funds permitted, received in- terior painting and one room was repapered, all necessary work to improve the premises and preserve the House.
As set forth in our last report, in the covenant of the deed of gift to the City, it is provided :
"in general, to do all things which may be necessary or proper to preserve said premises and buildings."
It is the purpose of your Board to do just this and no more.
Last year we had two notable events. On July 4th with appro- priate ceremonies two United Nations Victory flags were raised, one directly under the Stars and Stripes on the permanent pole adjoining the John Adams House, the other on a new pole adjoin- ing the John Quincy Adams House. Flags and pole were gifts of Mr. Delcevare King, which your Board gratefully acknowledges. These flags are flown day and night, rain or shine.
On September 10th, Past Commanders of the Ancient and Hon- orable Artillery Company (the oldest military organization in the United States) and guests attended a luncheon at the birth- place of John Adams, sponsored by Captain Fred K. Rogers, the first Quincy Commander of the Company. This also was a memor- able occasion and the first of its kind ever held in the John Adams House.
The Board takes this occasion to acknowledge the support and cooperation given us by the Mayor and members of the City Council.
Respectfully submitted,
MAURICE SPILLANE. Chairman HENRY ADAMS GRACE P. BONSALL, Secretary LAWRENCE W. LYONS HARRIET B. PIERCE
