Committee on Building and Grounds-The President, ex- officio, William M. Bullivant, John C. Kennedy
The Library was incorporated in 1871, and was built, fur- nished, and maintained for five years through the liberal contributions of citizens, a fund of over $65,000, of which the late J. Wiley Edmands contributed $17,000, being formed for the purpose. In March, 1876, the entire property of the Library was given to the City of Newton on condition of its maintenance forever as a Free Library
In the summer of 1886 an appropriation of $23,000, for the enlargement of the Library building, was made by the City Government. By this addition a well-lighted and ventilated stock room, a work room, and a librarian's room were ob- tained upon the upper floor; and a large reading room for magazines, a janitor's room, and a room for Government publications upon the lower floor. Edmands Hall was re- arranged, and a reference department established at the southern end
The Library contains 71,778 volumes, to which additions are constantly made
The circulation for 1908 was 247,470 volumes, or 808 per day
A new Registry of names was begun May 1, 1905, and the number of cards issued to January 1, 1909, was 11,792
A Reading Room, for newspapers and magazines, is main- tained, in which may be found the leading periodicals of the day
An annual appropriation of about $23,000 is made by the city for maintaining the library with its seven branches, be- sides which it has the income from five funds, as follows :- $1,000 given by Alden Speare, the annual proceeds of which are nearly $60, and are to be used in the purchase of works illustrating the manufacturing and mechanical trades; $10,000 a bequest from David B. Jewett, to form an art fund, the income from which now realizes about $500 per year; a bequest of the late Charles A. Read, from which not exceeding $600 yearly can be received; a bequest from John C. Chaffin of $5000, the income to be used for books; and $5,000, given by John S. Farlow, the annual income from which, $300, is to be used for the purchase of books for the Reference Depart- ment
