Ile morever he said that he must drink, & should drink when he thot it necessary; & that he could not make a confessn. of havg done wrong in usg. liquor as freely as he had. Whereupon it was moved to see whether, in the opinn. of the chh., his plea of necessity is a suffict. reason for the free use he has made of spirit- uous liquor; And when it was put to vote, not one voted in favor. - Hence the complaint was supported, & his plea was insufficient.

April 14 At a church-meeting regularly warned & holden at the meeting- house, Voted, that Brother Elisha Morton receive a 2nd admonition & if he do not reform, that sentence of excommunication be passed in 4 weeks after. At the same meeting, a complaint was presented against brother Morris Dwight for a violation of the third command- ment, which, according to his own statement, was sustained in the opinion of the church. As he, however, denied the criminality of his expressions, & would make no confession, the church Voted that he receive a public admonition. See a copy of his letter read April 11, 1824, on file.

Voted, That Morris Dwight have a second admonition, & if he do not repent of his offence, that he be excommunicated. At the same meeting a complaint was presented against sister Joanna, the wife of Paul Gibbs for a violation of the 7th commde. in the sin of fornication. -- She had been cited to appear; but did not. Whereupon, Voted, that the Pastor write her a letter, inquiring why she did not appear,- & stating that if she had sufficient reason for not appearing & wished to appear before the chh. at a future time to make her defence, she could have the privilege. Also
2d Voted, That if she had no sufficient reason for not appearing before the chh. & does not intend to appear to defend herself at a future time, she be admonished the first & second time, & if she make no satisfaction, that she be excommunicated.
Voted, That it is expedient to have a Sabbath school this season.

Voted, That the vote of the chh. of the 13th of May 1824 for the last act of ecclesiastical discipline toward Morris Dwight be carried into effect & that this act be performed on the 2nd Sabbath of February inst. ; providd he does not offer a confession before that day.
Voted, That he be furnished with a copy of this vote prev- iously to the sd 2d Sab. of Feby inst.
Voted, That his confession if he make one must be a confes- sion of breaking the 3d commandment, to answer to the complaint bro't against him, dated March 22, 1824.
Feb. 4 -- It should have been observed before these votes were entered, that the committee appointed by the chh. to make arrangements for callg. the mutual Council (see under datebf 7th Oct" last) made a report to the chh. at this meeting, that they had met with Morris Dwight to confer with him on the subject of calling the Council, & that he refused to join in calling the Council to act on the complaint brought against him, according to a written agreement signed by himself; from which agreement he tore off his name in the presence of the committee; therefore the business returns back to the chh. in the state in which it was at the appointment of the committee. -- In consequence of this refusal on his part, the precedg votes were taken.
