It will be seen that the amount paid for support out of the almshouse is large, owing to the expense for board at the hos-

pital, of Lydia Gunderway and Patrick Monahon, and from what information we have obtained the expense will not be likely to cease at present.


In May last, Mr. Healey and wife gave up their situation as Superintendents, and Stephen Benson and wife were engaged to fill the situation, which we believe they have done to the sat- isfaction of the town.

Town of South Scituate,


FOR THE


School Year 1872-3.


REPORT.


IN making their Report to the citizens of the town, the School Committee turn to the task with a good degree of satisfaction. Not that we are "perfectly satisfied " with the progress and condition of the Schools but. we feel that something has been done to place them on a higher level and make them more effective for good. At the beginning of the School-year, partly from necessity and partly from choice. an entire change was made in our corps of teachers. With the change of teachers an effort was immediately made to improve the discipline of the Schools. It has been demonstrated beyond any doubt. times without number, that a School under poor govern - ment is a poor School. whatever advantages it may pos- sess. Several of our Schools during the preceding term were so nearly failures, on account of loose management that the town would have lost very little had the Schools been dismissed and the School-houses closed. Perhaps one prominent cause of this result was the low wages paid to teachers previous to this year and the consequent
